Dragon Quest Remakes Coming to DS

Square Enix remaking three SNES classics.

by IGN Staff

July 30, 2007 - Square Enix president Yoichi Wada apparently wasn't
joking around when he hinted earlier this year that remakes of past
Dragon Quest hits may make it out prior to the release of Dragon Quest
IX. Today, a few leaked images from the upcoming issue of Jump confirm
that parts IV, V and VI are on the way!

Aside from the switch to 3D visuals, we know nothing about what to
expect over the original 16-bit versions. The part IV remake is set
for Japanese release this winter, so details should follow shortly.

Dragon Quest Remakes Coming to DS
by Jeff Easton

Square Enix has announced they will be bringing remakes of Dragon
Quest IV, Dragon Quest V, and Dragon Quest VI to the Nintendo DS, with
Dragon Quest IV set for release this winter in Japan. This will be the
first time Dragon Quest V and VI see release outside of Japan.

The remakes will be developed by ArtePiazza and at least Dragon Quest
IV looks to use 2D sprite-based graphics, unlike the 3D graphics of
the Final Fantasy remakes, which you can see in the scan down below.
This shouldn't effect development on the upcoming Dragon Quest IX, as
that is being developed by Factor 5, though Square Enix could delay it
for marketing reasons if they want to release the remakes first.

Dragon Quest IV, V, VI Join IX On DS

We already knew Square-Enix top dog Yoichi Wada wuvs handheld gaming
so much that he and his subordinates brought Dragon Quest IX to the
Nintendo DS. But word from the latest issue of Shonen Jump shows that
Wada are hankering to print their own money, as Square-Enix will
release full 3D remakes of Dragon Quest IV, Dragon Quest V and Dragon
Quest VI-originally released for the Famicom and Super Famicom-for the
Nintendo DS, with dates as yet unspecified.

Dragon Quests IV and V were already remade into 3D and released for
the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, respectively. DQ VI never saw a
release outside of its native Japan. Regardless of who released what,
where and when, these three money making opportunities are going to
net Squeenix some serious yen.

As a fan, all I can say is "thank God." Finally, someone at Square-
Enix had the brass balls to stand up to management and demand that
they dip into their back catalog. A bold, bold maneuver, but it seems
like it might just pay dividends. This man deserves a medal.

Yeah, now Squenix is trying to milk Dragon Quest like they did Final
Fantasy.  I think they're in for a rude awakening if they think that
it's going to be nearly as successful anywhere outside of Japan,
though.

That's a joke, right?

well Dragon Quest has only been huge in Japan, so given that, and DS's
huge success, it makes perfect sense for Square Enix to capitalize on
this.  it's just pure business. It's perfect to also increase
anticipation for DS-exclusive DQ IX.

as for western gamers in the U.S., U.K. and europe, it's only welcome
news to the smaller fanbase of Dragon Quest / Dragon Warrior players.
