oh.... some addit'nal info. lessen your use of magics during battle, use
physical attacks more often or your ever friendly GF's. using elemental
magics in your attack or in defense junction enables your player/s to have
addit'nal effects on your opponents, either increase your damage inflicted or
lessen even absorb or nullify opponent's attack.........

When I played it the second time through I just ignored the
low-and-mid-level elemental spells (Fire, Fira, Thunder, Thundera, etc)
altogether -- too much of a time waster. Early on I was able to Draw
Tornado from some aerial creature so I drew 100 of them, gave them all
to Squall and Junctioned it to his Strength. That alone made him a
powerhouse. Combined with Darkside, he decimated everything easily, and
the other party member were just there to heal him

I like to eschew Drawing altogether in favour of the magic refinement
abilities. On just about any beach, including the one just outside
Garden, you can fight those fish, who drop Fish Scales, one refines to
20 Water.
VIII is a game where if you manage to get good magic early, the bosses
are pathetically easy. Disk 1 Seifer fell in one hit, Edea in three.
