Ben - 02 Sep 2003 07:06 GMT Now that I've got your attention I would like to ask about the various way people post to this (and other) groups. I post using Google groups and this means that there is a time delay of about 3-9 hours before a message reaches the group. I have noticed at time when I posted before other people, but their message has been shown first because they must be posting by a faster way. Do some people who post other ways get their message on immediately, or is there just less of a delay than with google's processing time? What other ways are there to post here? Would it involve using outlook express or something? I'm not too experienced with outlook because I don't use it hardly ever. the good thing about Google is that you don't need to subscribe to a group to post, you can post anywhere.

Yeah use outlook, your ISP should be able to help you set it up. I am with bigpond, not too hard

And if your ISP doesn't carry NGs like mine doesn't
http://news.individual.net/
Now, you only subscribe to groups you want to post to, but it has no bearing on being able to drop groups or add groups. I have over 50 subscribed, and it affects nothing. Good luck

Subscribing is just telling the software that you want to put it separate from the 32,000 other ones, it's not like you're paying a monthly fee.. You prolly mean you don't need a news serevr. Well if your isp does have one, you can try this : http://xnews.newsguy.com/ Most people use otulook because they're used to it by now, but you should stay away from MS's online products as far as possible, at all times.

This is the best free newsserver that I know of.

All subscription does is put the newsgroup on a different, easier-to-access list within the client. Subscription doesn't actually sign you up for anything.

Ben - 09 Sep 2003 02:32 GMT Does anyone know how long it takes for news.individual.net to process your information and give you your password. I sent the info for registering on Friday and now it's Tuesday and I still haven't had any response apart from the automated confirmation of recieving my email. I realise that I'm in Australia and so there is a matter of hours lag for the n.i.n people, but I would have thought that by today I would've got a response. Oh well I'll check later today.

I'm going to try News.Individual.Net which someone recommended. I'm still waiting for my registration to be processed. I still don't exactly understand how these news servers work. Do they just supply a collection of ngs from usenet or something which are also available through different news servers or do different news servers have a collection of completely different ngs?

For the most part each server offers it's own set of newsgroups, often numbering in the tens of thousands or more. These groups are interconnected though, like I post to them via prodigy but you would post through individual.net, but we still see each other's posts. The set of groups is pretty regular across the board unless you're looking for something really obscure that no one posts to anyway. Usually it's some sort of fake fan group or something created by trolls if you don't get it. like alt.games.final-fantasy.relm-is-fooey or some such.

If you are on dial-up, they probably have one. Look on their website for the address. Logon is usually your internet logon/password. If you don't, their are newsgroup servers out there (most are non-free) or you can set up your own server if you have a Linux box or something.

Thanks for the advice, although you did seem to miss an entire thread of discussions. I'll check to see if my isp has any news servers, but I have already signed up for new.individual.net and am still waiting to be a registered user.
Ben Smith - 26 Sep 2003 03:36 GMT I finally got a reply from news.individual.net. Because I was getting junk mail gallore in my yahoo account, their response must not have got though. Now this is my new hotmail account. This is still the same Ben who had the email imnotscurrilous@yahoo.com.au. I am using outlook express currently because it is what was already on my computer, but I just want to know how do you go down to further older threads past the ones at the bottom. I personally liked Google groups setup, but even now I see the problem with it. I post here and the response is pretty much instantaneous, but it probably wont show up on Google for about 3-9 hours. I don't know if that meant that my responses went straight through before, but I couldn't see them on Google, or that it actually took google 3-9 hours to get the message to the news server. I think the first case is more likely. Anyway, I'm just rambling on. Perhaps those people who don't use OE can suggest a better free downloadable newsreader program.
