Worm holes... OOPS I mean TCP ports.

Does Final Fantasty XI really require that many thousands
of outbound ports be opened on the gateway firewall?

Their technical support page suggests it needs 15,000
TCP port and an equal number of UDP ports opened
as well as a few others.

Is Final Fantasty a game or a disguise for malware?

I looked into what you were talking about thinking that you had to be
mistaken (perhaps misunderstanding "open port 15000" as "open 15000
ports") but unbelievably you're right.  However, it looks as if the
game doesn't really need all of those ports to be open, just that the
game _might_ use some of those ports somewhere down the line.  In
other words, Square is being really lazy about firewall support.

Since I don't play FFXI nor have any intention of doing so, I can't
really help you.  The only way around it seems to be finding out what
IPs FFXI servers are on, but I don't know where you could find those.

Thanks Rob. This is for my Son who wished to play and

you are likely correct that they are lazy about firewall

support. They will sooner or later be burned by their

lack of interest in the keeping the home network secured.

I play FF:XI just fine without having opened any single port for it...

Presumably these are for outgoing connections, not incoming.
