This is my second time playing FFVI, this one being the celebration of
the one year anniversary of starting the FF series...it's that awesome.

Both times, I've worked the Cursed Shield as hard as I possibly could
and never got it uncursed. Something I or a quick Google search have
never been able to determine:

Do the 255 required battles for the Cursed Shield need to be
*consecutive*? Can the battle count be reset by some event?

I'm not sure if unequipping the shield resets the counter or not, though
I am fairly certain that the 255 battles have to be fought with the same
guy equipping the shield, i.e taking it off Locke and putting it on
Edgar starts a separate "Edgar" counter. I am, of course, just guessing
on this.

Anyway, the best way to uncurse the shield that I can think of is to
just equip the shield and a ribbon on whoever (I like Locke, myself),
and keep them in your party while you teach him and everyone else all
the magic spells you have at the one desert where Hoovers and Cactaurs
(er, "Cactrots") appear (the desert near Maranda? It's been a while
since I played). The shield will be uncursed before you hit that goal,
plus your levels will be way buffed.

My first response didn't seem to make it.

I don't think it has to be consecutive, but I don't know whether or not
you have to keep it on the same person. I always kept it on Edgar and
would remove it for boss battles.

I'm almost absolutely positive that a) it does not need to be
consecutive, and b) it does not need to be on only one person.

If you have any further doubts, Google "Master ZED."  He knows all.

No, the battles dont have to be consecutive but when you change who
has it equipped, it does reset the counter ... plus you have to keep
careful count of the battles, its very easy to lose track of 255
battles.
And remember, where you have a concentration of power in a few hands, all too frequently men with the mentality of gangsters get control. History has proven that. All power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.
