remember this is a remake of the Japanese 8-bit Final Fantasy III for
the Famicom that was never released officially in the west (U.S., U.K.,
Europe),

It's *not* the  "FF III" for SNES which was actually FFVI (FF6) in
Japan.

pics are kinda small, but the DS remake looks nice compared to the
utterly archaic-looking original FF3 on the Famicom that released in
April 1990.

Not another remake for a Nintendo system.  This can't be.

It's a remake for a game that was never sold in the U.S. and never
translated into English.

And is one of the best in the series to boot.

It was certainly the best of the 2D ones I played. I'm not a great fan of
opera, but the singing in this game was a joy to behold...

That's FF6.

you're thinking of Final Fantasy 6 / VI  for the 16-bit Super Famicom,
which was called Final Fantasy 3 / III on the American Super NES.

the Final Fantasy 3 / III  that is the topic of this thread was
originally an 8-bit Famicom game that never came out on the NES.
You've probably never played it, unless you have a Japanese Famicom and
the  Japanese Famicom FF3/III cartridge, or played the ROM via
emulation on a computer.

Gawd, isn't all this a bit confusing?
Again, you're right, I've never played it. Never actually heard of that
version of the game.

slightly confusing, but not too bad actually.

American's got the original Final Fantasy on the NES.  it was completed
& released in Japan in 1987,  but not until 1990 in America, just
around the time Japan was getting its FF3.

then the real FF2 and FF3 (both for the 8-bit Japanese Famicom) were
passed  / skipped over for the American NES.   then FF4 on the 16-bit
Super Famicom (SF)  in Japan, was renamed FF2 for American SNES.

Then FF5 on the SF in Japan was skipped over, not released in America
(until years later on the Playstation)... then FF6 on the SF was
renamed FF3 for American SNES.

with the release of FF7 on the Playstation, the numbering for Japanese
and American FF games were the same from then on. Playstation in
America got the real FF2 and FF5 (but not FF3)  in the FF Origins and
FF Anthology  releases.

I don't know what Square Enix will call the DS remake of FF3 in
America, that is, if it comes out here at all. I assume it will, heh.
