Yeah I was.

Gawd, isn't all this a bit confusing?
Again, you're right, I've never played it. Never actually heard of that
version of the game.

slightly confusing, but not too bad actually.
American's got the original Final Fantasy on the NES. it was completed
& released in Japan in 1987, but not until 1990 in America, just
around the time Japan was getting its FF3.
then the real FF2 and FF3 (both for the 8-bit Japanese Famicom) were
passed / skipped over for the American NES. then FF4 on the 16-bit
Super Famicom (SF) in Japan, was renamed FF2 for American SNES.
Then FF5 on the SF in Japan was skipped over, not released in America
(until years later on the Playstation)... then FF6 on the SF was
renamed FF3 for American SNES.
with the release of FF7 on the Playstation, the numbering for Japanese
and American FF games were the same from then on. Playstation in
America got the real FF2 and FF5 (but not FF3) in the FF Origins and
FF Anthology releases.
I don't know what Square Enix will call the DS remake of FF3 in
America, that is, if it comes out here at all. I assume it will, heh.
