I've noticed that over the years no one has been able to quite figure
out why the warrior in FF3 are called "Onion Kids" when they start
out.
There's a translation of the entire Kimagure Orange Road manga
floating around on the web, and while reading it I came upon something
which might explain it:

<Translation note:  "imo yarou" = lit., "potato-jerk"; comes from the
fact  that potatoes are grown in the country, and thus, are
unfashionable or  uncool...>

Onion Kid sounds rather similar to this (does anyone know what the
untranslated term was?)
If you remember, the warriors did come from a town out in the
mountains. So it's quite possible that the starting class should be
translated as 'Hick' or 'Bumpkin'.

Anyone know if Square plans to FINALLY release FF3 here in the states?

They've announced that plans to rerelease it in Japan are still moving
forward, in spite of the end of the Wonderswan.  While no official North
American release has been announced, I'd say it's likely.

I always figured it might have something to do with kids being all wimpy
and crying... you know, cuz onions make people cry... uh... yeah.

I guess it would be weird if it were like in FF5, and that if you became
an Onion Kid at the end of the game after mastering the other classes it
made you a super-powerful god.

I thought FF3 did it that way.

Like, her hair was red, but it was a little too red, y' know?
And the other one, the tall, lanky one, his face was so blank and
expressionless.  He didn't even seem human.  I think he was a

And Lulu in FFX has the "Onion Knight". FFX was my first and only FF.
I was rather bemused at the name. Now I learn it has
a puzzling history in the series.
What to make of these "Onions" kids and knights.
