Josh 'Ramen' Miller - 26 Dec 2005 16:06 GMT Wow, I've not gone more than 4 squares from Cornelia and I'l loving this game absolutely.
I am a big fan of FF1, it just tends to be a bit slow on the NES. Also I loose my saved game.
This thing zips along. I've played like 5 minutes and I'm already level 3. Also the new "Modern interface" is really sweet. The whole game feels new, but is still familiar.
Can't say I like the new names.
THEY ARE IMPS DAMNIT
ALSO MAD PONIES
MAD PONIES
MAD PONIES LURK IN THE TREES
MAD f.cking PONIES

Seems like the game is pretty good and a must get. Glad to see a FF post for once.

Josh 'Ramen' Miller - 27 Dec 2005 03:18 GMT It's hard to say. Now that I'm more into it I can't say it seems that much easier. I'd say yes, but not too extremely. It's more that it's just different. For example
Money seems to be more plentiful, though things seem to possibly cost more. specifically spells. I'd have to pull out my old guide to be sure. It SEEMS that way.
The spells ue MP now instead of points. Generally this meas you can use them more though it's still limited by spell "levels". and you stil buy spells.
There seems to be a slightly tougher enemy distribution. My first TWO battles were with Madponies. I'm pretty sure previously you only encountered them after crossing the bridge. Also some of the enemies seem a bit beefier.
On the other hand, the battles use the "auto retarget" system of newer games meaning you don't miss if the enemy selected is killed first.
That's all I can think of.

They're just far more rare than the multiple Imp configurations you run into.

There are also wargs.
I'm waiting to discover Chaos has been renammed "Sauron", Lich is now "Balrog", and Tiamat is "Nazgul".
ON A COMPLETELY UNRELATED NOTE
Despite the ability to use lower case and longer names I still instinctively made them 4 letters and all caps.

I noticed that it seemed to take a lot less time to outfit my party in the early game. In classic FFI, it took forever to earn enough to buy everything I wanted from Elfland.

Black Belts/Masters can still do ridiculous damage, but it's no longer possible to one-hit-kill Chaos (or at least I couldn't).

Still though, I might have to get a GBA if they keep releasing good FF remakes. FF:DOS, FF4, and maybe perhaps even an old used copy of FFTA make the system almost worth buying.

Most of the dialog changes seem for the better (I'm so glad they kept "Spoony Bard", though), but the name changes do kill a bit of the nostalgia.
Actually, most of them I don't mind, but I really, really wish they'd kept "Meteo".

I have the PS1 version but I'm starting to really like th eportability of the GBA for some reason.
On a related note, does FF4A let you save anywhere? It's one feature I like about DOS. Not because I can "cheat" but because I can sit down and play for 2 minutes or play for 20 and always know I can stop without having to chase down a save point.

It does, but does so in a way that you can't "cheat".
If you choose "QuickSave", your game automatically exits once you save. Choosing Continue will reload that game, and delete the "quicksaved" file. So it's basically a way of saving anywhere, without giving you the opportunity to save right in front of a boss and retrying it a billion times.

Kind of annoying if it is since it means we'll never get a real "FF3 Advance". would it kill them to release them all in the same format on the same system?
Maybe I'm just anal. Kind of reminds me of my irritation with MG1 and Twin Snakes not comming out for PS2.

That's all I need. I suppose given the nature of Portable gaming such features are nessesary. It's sort of a "quick play" medium. Like the other day, I'm waiting to get my hair cut. i only endedup playing for like a minute before I ended up being up. I'd have wasted my time otherwise.

Oh yeah, it's definitely a good system the way they have it setup, let's you "quick play", but you can't abuse it.

I admit to setting up to abuse the save system of DoS but I have not once actually HAD to abuse it (well maybe once).
