I have started playing this game again after a looong absence. Last time
around I levelled my thief to around 7 before I got bored and turned back to
my game of choice EQ.
Now that I think I'm done with EQ, like I said, I started up FFXI again. Can
someone tell me to best maximize my experience? I think my problem is that
the console Final-Fantasy's completely sucked me in to where I wanted to
play, this game is the same MMORPG grind you get anywhere else, and I have
yet to discover the "Community" aspects to the game. Where is every one
while I'm in the noob areas grinding? I only see people in town. I'm not
rude, or obnoxious, but I do ask a question in game with no reply at any
time. My only interaction with other players is when some new WHM tries out
a heal on me then runs off. I want to love this game, but I have a hard time
"getting it."

Please don't flame, Allahs is not really very helpful to me either. Any
other good resources?

If you want in-game help, ask the people with the M by their names....they
are Mentors, volunteers who are high level and offer to help people new to
the game get used to it.

Until around lvl 10, the game is mostly solo in terms of battle...after that
it's all parties.  As a thief, you might want to get a bow and practice
"pulling" (drawing a monster toward you and then running to your party so
all of you can kill it together), because at the early levels, thfs aren't
real popular in parties.  (also getting a Silence knife is good).

Try to get into a good early level linkshell.  That will help with the
social aspects, and you'll be able to find people to hunt with.
