FF VII---Chocobo question

 Hey.

Two months back I finally bought a used PSX (perennially behind
the technology curve, that's me).  Friends immediately piled on me
stating that I had to play Final Fantasy VII or else, and after
spending 100+hours (which probably makes me a baby in the population
of this newsgroup) I had to agree that they had a point---Fantastic
game.

I admit that this is a question born out of impatient
curiousity---roughly how many times did you have to try mating a
wonderful class S chocobo to a black class S chocobo to get a
golden, as opposed to Yet Another Black or even an ordinary?  All
the FAQs I've read seem to say that "You see, when a wonderful
chocobo and a black chocobo love each other very much and you feed
them incredibly expensive greens and race them both until they are
class S and give them a nice fresh Zeio nut, some sleepy music will
play and you will have a shiny baby Golden Chocobo the next
morning."  Some do say "with luck", but none say exactly how much
luck...

It's just that I'm starting to get worried the disk spinning
assembly will quit on me from all the resetting.  I did buy the
system used, after all.

Feel free to laugh at the newbie.

I never breeded (right form of word?). I beat the weapons to get the
Chocobo :-p. I don't know why everyone thought they were so hard with
out KOTRT. All it takes is patience.

It just takes a lot more time. They're not that difficult. The only
difference between using KOTR and a regular attack is the amount of
damage. In fact, it might be easier with regular attacks since you
don't have to worry about MP or the whole mime sequence getting
broken.

There's no fast way to repeatidly unleash limit breaks in FFVII, is
there? Apart for mime that is. If there were, using Omnislash would've
probably been better. IIRC, it does 15 hits while KOTR does 13.

As for the original question, I don't recall being really frustrated
with that part. The more annoying part was getting a green and
opposite blue, I think. I guess I managed the golden after 5 resets or
something? Make sure you have the right kinds and all that...

What point is it determined what kind you'll get?  I'd like to know so that
way instead of resetting I'll just reload that memory state/save. (ePSXe).

I have no idea. I guess that when you actually select the breed button
(or whatever it is that finalises the process). Just be glad you can
load memory states and don't have to wait like the rest of us for all
of the game to reload from the beginning. :-)
