The reason everyone needs a GBA is that if more than one person is
playing, the menu screen appears on the GBA, so if one person needs to
use an item etc. it doesn't interrupt the game.
If you already have one GBA, then you can play in 1P mode, with the GBA
attached for Mog (can be useful, as one of his modes is an enemy weak
point / HP gauge), but the second player feels pretty redundant this way
(they don't actually get to fight much)
Having said that, it's a fun (if quite repetitive) game. (I haven't
finished it yet, but I'll probably get back to it when I'm in the mood)

Is it actually worth playing only in single player on the GC without the GBA
game?

Yes, although it is a bit tougher than as a 4P game
BTW you don't need a game for the GBA, you just connect an empty one to
the controller socket (like with Wind Waker and the Tingle Tuner)

No. All it is is a throwaway game that Square made so they could be
licensed for GBA development.

Come on! It's a great game. It always brings me into a nice mood, and I
have actually played it together with my wife and daughter!

Cutesy, primarily multiplayer games about buckets on platforms with a very
limited selection of good games don't do much for us bored, disaffected
college students.
