Gamespy is doing this big game matchup thing to find the greatest game
of all time. And Fallout has got to beat Baldur's Gate.

It's March 3, 2004, 06:30 A.M. Eastern Time Zone and it looks like ya'll
can still vote, and check out the spectrum of games in this beauty
contest, and the relative performance per 7 or 8 thousands "votes" over
what appears to be a 24 hour period.
The BG fans were ahead by 3 or 4 hundred last night at approx. 9 P.M.
Eastern Time.  It's approx..........   3 or 4 hundred now.

I don't see this as a mere "vote" for FO2.

---------

This game poll can be cynically profiled as another Gamespy "honey pot"
to attract our eye balls.  Gamespy is a pay site so it's "free" side is
limited to news, reviews, and polls.

It's their download side that has the false line up, the perpetual,
vaporous 200 ahead of you regardless the time of day, OR NIGHT,
so you'll "pay" by watching game ads. Pay the bucks to sub to their
online mag, and minimize the per page ad content, or pay with your time
and see two third ad content per screen, and wait, and wait, and wait.

On the whole their "Queuing" system is functional, not like 3ddownload,
and if you Really-REALLY-RREEAALLLYY want something it may only take 1
or 2 tries with a good download manager to get something for "nothing"
over your phone line. Your broad band folks "should" be stable enough
and have a short enough download time that the longest wait is this
"line up" of ads for us to walk away from, like we have done for decades
with commercial TV.

And on the whole their one third "free" content, the news, reviews, and
polls are worth the price of admission, one's time and eye ball scan.
If your are up for a daily gaming news letter, this one may have more
ham than spam. I see some value here, AND each one of you need to see
for yourselves.

Polls furnish data, and data has a value these days.  Your participation
in "polls" is another price of admission, and maybe it will shape the
content of this online mag and ultimately contribute to what games may
be produced. That, ...  may be an idealistic conclusion, and yet I think
there is a "cause and effect" relationship in this marketing.

------

AND,

I don't see this as a mere "vote" for FO2.

Maybe there are some "deep" console games out there, but that's for you
all to educate me on.

If you value PC level RPG's, it does not matter if consoles are where
"the smart money" is focused.  What matters is demonstrating "the market
share" of in depth, role playing systems.

OR, expect JUMPING PUZZLES galore and useless perks and abilities,
Barbie style accessories, to hang on your PAPER DOLL "hero".

At this point, I am more interested in seeing the perpetuation of in
depth character development and diverse story paths than worrying about
which "class" or SPECIAL system is used, which game engine is utilized.
Game engines and game platforms will come and go. If one "cares" about
the story and has  "drive" to finish the game, adapting to turn based or
'real time' follows.  It's the repetition of conflicts in battles, or
the endless jumping puzzles, or the eternal Fed_Ex tours that  create
the boredom and abandonment of "the quest".

I lost interest in BG in that Sword Coast add on.

The Gamespy writer says BG2 was a significant refinement of BG.
Considering the different publication times do you think FO2 would have
been "better" in 2000 than 1998?

You imply that BG2's version of "real time" combat was more than merely
playable.  How did it differ from FOT's dual version of "real time' and
"turn based"?

I'm quite certain it's a question of getting out of the rat caves before
quitting over some feature that leaves you in eternal boredom...
The game-engine always makes first impressions and is more than often the
deciding factor in whether to bother or not.
It's people like us who likes the scenario too damn much (and an occasional
turn-based lover) who "adapts" to whatever the game is gonna put us through.
But not everyone is a post-apoc fanatic.
Mostly everyone however is fond of pace in what is supposed to be an action
game and turns don't allow for much pace at all.

I'm not trying to spark another RT vs TB debate, I'll just let you know that
RT is more popular even if we think we know better.
The biggest share of sales don't come from fans. It comes from people who
likes first impressions.

Bg's, bg2's and fot's real time combat systems to me seemed pretty equal
overall, I don't recall a difference between bg and bg2.... but FOT is not
really an rpg so I wouldn't compare it... I didn't like FOT because of a lot
of reasons, but it's real time system wasn't one of them.

""Pace""
You may have the "buzz" word nailed down here.  ""Pace"" could paint a
broad picture of gaming.  Not a complete image that would include all,
and one that might touch on most.

FO TACTICS, yes, focus was on 'tactics', and switching from TB to RT and
back when the "pace" required, helped.  The hybrid worked enough for me.
Don't think it worked for all.

Some of these matches aren't too bad... Pong Vs Tetris... tough choice...
though very few gamers today remember Pong (I barely do)

That can be sorted then.
