I'm having problems getting through the 1st trial in Fallout 2. I can
not seem to get the 2nd door open. I've looked around and taken
everything I could find, but nothing seems to help. I've even found a
couple of walkthroughs and they call say the same thing, and what they
say doesn't make sense. They all tell me that once I've fought and
beaten the 3 ants in the main chamber to go left at a juncture and then
open the 1st door. Then once through the door I would see raised plates
(traps) and that I should disarm the traps and then go the the chamber
on the left where there are 3 more ants guarding that, once I have
beaten them I can search the large pot for some explosives (remember I
did say that the walkthrough says this is to my left).
However what I have found is that the 1st door is straight ahead, and
once through it I do not see any raised plates (traps), and a hall way
to the right (not left) that leads to a chamber guarded by 3 ants
inside the chamber is a pot with healing potion only (no explosives)
and a large depression in the floor.
I did not want to resort to any walkthroughs because this looked like a
pretty straight forward game, but like I said I can not get the 2nd
door open that will allow me to continue the game. What am I doing
wrong?

Nothing the walkthroughs are just all dead wrong. They are somehow not
counting the first door you encounter as a door.
As for the way to open the second door, use lockpick on it. Perhaps
multiple times if it doesn't succeed at once.
As for it being a straightforward game, it isn't, but I'll let you find
that our for yourself.
