So I installed FO1 into a fairly old computer of mine with Windows XP.
Since it was reasonably powerful still, I installed it at 296 mb. So I
played perhaps 10 hours worth of the game, and then at a certain point
in the game, I accidentally shot Dogmeat and killed him, which, LOL,
crashed my computer. I thought it was one of Fallout's usual game
crashes that occur every once in a while. But at this point I could not
get the game running again. It keeps saying "You need 20 mb of free
hard drive space to run Fallout etc...". The thing is, I have about 580
mb of free hard drive space after installing FO1 (this computer only
has 6 gigs of space).
The strange thing is, even uninstalling and installing it again didn't
work. It wouldn't run. I DID get it to run at 4.1 mb and 90 mb
installation, but not at 296 mb. It worked fine before. What happened?
And I played FO2 before playing FO1, installed at 296 mb, with about
580 mb free hard space left over just like with FO1, and I finished
THAT game fine. So I don't know what's up now.
Geez, is killing Dogmeat such a SIN?? ;)

It's a common error, but it is really weird you didn't experience it
when you installed it in the first place. Anyway, the fix can be found
here: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5061&start=0
The snippet from there pertaining to the problem you're having:
Insufficient Disk Space Error
------------------
When you get that message it's either:
A. You are really running low on diskspace and should free up some, or
B. Your config files misguide you.
The following solution is for the latter and was proven to work for both
FO1 and FO2.
In your Fallout directory find the fallout.cfg file and open it with
Notepad.
Note: Your file may look slightly different from the one listed below.

I think the problem is that the disc space checking uses an invalid
and imbesil algorithm which does not understand large drives (and propably
sees modulo of your harddrive capacity as a negative number) ^^
Fallout isn't the only game which does make this failure (because they
assumed taht 2 gigs maximum of the era was the actual maximum).
