a few odd things have happened so I thought I'd ask
went through Necropolis, met the friendly ghouls, fixed the water pipes
before taking the chip, released the imprisoned friendly ghoul and
killed a few more unfriendlies on the way out. but when i go back after
fitting the chip at vault 13, all the ghouls are dead. I'm certain I
fixed the pipe first so it can't be that they had no water can it?

and are those purple robed guys supposed to off themselves if you talk
to them?

oh and somewhat unconnected:
is the dinosaur footprint just an easter egg?
are there any other easter eggs as well as the footprint and doctor who?
and is there any way to stop the damn dog (from junktown) from setting
off every trap before I have a chance to spot and disarm them? short of
killing the dog anyway

I don't remember exactly, but I think someone does off the ghouls if you
do a certain thing. Something like the supermuties learn they helped
you. It's not the water thing though.

The Godzilla footprint and the Dr. Who thing are two special encounters.
There are several more; you're much more likely to get them with high
luck. Just run around long enough and you'll get some, but I've never
seen more than a few in a single game. Also, in Fallout 2 there are some
special encounters that require very /low/ luck. I can't remember if
that's the case in Fallout 1 as well.

Aside from special encounters, there are tons of easter eggs throughout
the game. It can be debatable what you consider an easter egg; some
things are pop culture references but still fit in with the game (it IS
the future, after all). Fallout 2 is overflowing with easter eggs,
almost to a fault.

is there a list of them anywhere? I just found the talking cows, "moo.
moo I say". wonder if they'd been reading Discworld for that one

as for the dead ghouls I had a look on a couple of websites and
apparently there should be one friendly survivor in the building near
the church with a secret passage to the sewers, but he's not there.
probably a bug, or I killed him by accident early in the game thinking
he'd attack me

Hmm, I had those exact lines in a MUD before Fallout was released.
I don't know where I got it from though.  I don't recall any
Discworld book with that.

Gaspode says something similar, "woof, woof I say" and "woof, bloody
woof" I think in Moving Pictures. either that or Men At Arms

I think it might be a reference to Wasteland.

ok now I found a crashed alien spaceship. nice gun on one body and a pic
of elvis on the other, nice easter egg there. but is the gun supposed to
mutate it's victims? everyone I shoot turns into a carbon copy of me
when they die, except if they're wearing bulky armour, in which case
they turn into a mutant. when I came across a gang of brotherhood
paladins fighting raiders, one of the brotherhood got caught in the
crossfire from my gun so of course I had to kill everyone. the very
powerful alien gun came in handy, along with rocket launchers from the
glow, but when the paladins turned into mutants I was wondering if
mutants had somehow stolen the armour, until I realised it's the gun
doing it

Sounds like a bug.  I never had that happen if you're referring to
the solar powered alien blaster.  (my favorite weapon due to its
ability to recharge)

doesn't say anything about being solar powered. says it's a strange gun
of alien origin but looks like it could support small energy cells

Are we talking about FO2 here?

If yes, then the alien spaceship special encounter should give you the
"Alien Blaster". It is not solar powered... it runs on energy cells. It is
not the greatest laser weapon though, and its ranger is horrible.

The solar powered laser pistol is from another encounter, "The guardian" or
something like that. It is a stone arch, and when you go through it the
first time, it brings you back to V13 in the past... in the weapon room (the
one nearest to main computer), on the floor, obscured by walls, is the
"Solar Scorcher". It requires 0 AP to recharge when its day time (IIRC 8am
to 6pm), outdoor only. It's an okay laser pistol - saves your energy cells
for easier encounters. Doesn't have enough power for tough opponents, like
Power Armored people, tough aliens, fire geckos, etc.

I agree the mutation is a bug... never heard of it though.

nope, Fallout 1

This is Fallout 1. And the Alien Blaster is one of the best weapons in
the game, if you bother with energy weapons.

The Solar Scorcher is Fallout 2 only, and it's not a very good gun. The
Alien Blaster is a nice energy pistol in Fallout 2 if you find it early
enough, but the pulse pistol is far better. (and the gauss guns are
better than any, IMHO)
