Just finished FO2 for the first time! (Yes, really).
I checked the file properties on my savegame and see it was created in
March 2003. Wow, I've been playing it for nearly 1.5 years! Can't
beleive it's finally over.

Few things:
# I loved the custom ending.

# It's funny how I spend so long trying to get the parts together for
that car, finally got it running, drove it into the desert, ran out of
fuel, forgot where I'd parked, and never saw it again!

# I never used my doctor or 1st aid skills. I just used to use the pip-
boy to rest.

# There were some /very/ hard battles: Getting the vertibird plans from
the enclave was an epic struggle of:
switching rooms,
healing,
switching rooms,
firing,
repeat /^\

# Also, the final timed escape from the enclave rig was incredibly hard.
Trying to get through that barracks with only one NPC on my side (I
couldn't get Sulik to follow me in without triggering the alarm, so I
was stuck with Marcus). In the end, I basically had to save before every
single shot and keep reloading if I didn't get a critical to the eyes on
my opponent.

# Never managed to be a porn star. Lacked experience, despite spending a
mint in the brothels and doing both mother and daughter in Reno!

# Is there any point in playing on? I imagine I'll be scraping the
barrel so I'm inclined to stop now, unless someone strongly recommends
me otherwise.

# I forget my level, but I ended up with 124 hitpoints. High? Low?

Just reading some FAQs and aparrently I didn't need to fight my way out
of the barracks, and could have had help from the enclave guards when
fighting the final boss. I've no idea how I could have done that - I
could walk past guards no problem, but there were a few robots that
would ID me as foe and trigger a base-wide panic.

There are some easter eggs you can find after completing the game. You
should get someone to tell you where to look for them but don't let them
give you spoilers.

If you mean any point in continuing the same character, I'd say no.
There are some cool things to do after beating the game, but you might
as well read a spoiler to find them rather than meticulously scouring
the game to find anything fun.

If you mean any point in continuing to play Fallout, that's a whole
different story. I've beaten the game probably 10 or 20 times now, and
it's still fun to go back and make a different style of character. If
you've only played the one character (you must've been pretty thorough,
for 1.5 years...), try playing the opposite. Make a melee-only
character, or a pyro, or any of a thousand other combat variations. Try
a stupid one (great dialog!), or a super smart one (lots of gems in the
dialog for them too).

Hint: Visit New Reno.

About to reinstall FO2 again... Is there a patch to fix this?

NMA still has a good downloads section.

Really a great game. Played it two times yet.

That is interesting. Imho you can´t loose your car, because it will be
marked on the map with a small circle ("car out of fuel" or something of
that kind).

yeah but there's a truckload of bugs in the game that will let you lose it
though.

Yep, don't play FO2 without the patches if you ever want to make use
of the car.

I never encountered such a bug. Does it depend on the patches applied?
But wait, I often encountered the "unwanted-leaving-a-caravan-bug",
mostly on NCR to Redding-route. That was really annoying.

Well, later in the game the car did disappear, but to start with it
seemed to guzzle so much fuel that it was not worth keeping, considering
it was barely faster than walking from place to place, so I just left it
in the desert anyway.

I can't afford to lose the trunk though... it's the mobile firearm and Cat's
Paws magazine storage for all of my characters.
Fortunately, that never happened to me... I always got the "car's here"
indicator of my maps.

Hm. I could have really done with more storage space, I had to spend
hours (literally, I'd often sit down for half hour sessions) organising
my inventory between my team mates.

I never used a Cats Paw. What do they do? IIRC, I couldn't read them.

A side quest and an easter egg comes to mind.

IIRC the side quest is in the town you found Marcus, given by a ghoul.
The easter egg is activated after end-game, in New Reno.

I wonder if you could make an El Mariachi guitar case mod that can hold
stuff and make it weightless.

Did you get your car modified at the Chop Shop (NR miniquest)? It makes it more
efficient and improves the trunk capacity.

Nope. Literally, I got it running, drove it into the desert, ran out of
fuel and left it there!

There are several possibilities to decrease fuel consumption of your
car.
Large energy cells are often available outside NCR, and the small ones
can be used as fuel too.

maybe drive by navaro occasionally... those patrols are loaded with cells if
I remember correctly... provided you can kill them of course...
