I've always found that by the time I'm tough enough to accomplish this
that I either don't need the small amount of extra money that much,
or that there aren't any geckos left to skin. Ie, I get tougher by
killing geckos, which means there are fewer to skin later on...

Yeah, it's not very useful, but it's still fun.
In particular, what you can do is sneak through the caves, get Smiley,
and sneak back out (if you can manage it, lots of saves). You can get by
with only killing 2 or 3 of the golden geckos, and then you leave a
bunch of goldens for their skins later. This is really only useful if
you're desperate to get enough money for (for example) leather armor
before leaving Klamath.
