First of all, I'd like to thank you all for answereing a newbie like myself
in playing that great game Fallout2. You've been very kind, and I appreciate
that :)

Then to my new question:

Is there a way to skin those geckos? Id' like my carachter to learn that..

You have to save Smiley first.  You can get the quest from Klamath, save
Smiley from the Toxic Caves, travel back to Klamath and speak to him again
and he will teach you how to skin them darned Geckos.

Yes,

It's been a while but I beleive you can talk to that trapper "Snappie" or
"Smittie" Or "Smilie"? The one you save in the first town you stumble into
leaving arroyo... Klamath I think.

Just talk to the woman who holds Sulik for debts and damages about stuff
after you read the bulitin board that says a trappers gone missing. You'll
go to a place with radioactive slime all over the floor (put rubber boots in
your inv and you won't be affected... but they will melt eventually) and
there you'll find a bunch of Golden Geckos and Smilie holed up (with a
damaged leg) in one room on the bottom floor to your right. Bring him back
to town and let him rest up and he'll tell you how to skin a gecko.

I've always found that by the time I'm tough enough to accomplish this
that I either don't need the small amount of extra money that much,
or that there aren't any geckos left to skin.  Ie, I get tougher by
killing geckos, which means there are fewer to skin later on...

Yeah, it's not very useful, but it's still fun.

In particular, what you can do is sneak through the caves, get Smiley,
and sneak back out (if you can manage it, lots of saves). You can get by
with only killing 2 or 3 of the golden geckos, and then you leave a
bunch of goldens for their skins later. This is really only useful if
you're desperate to get enough money for (for example) leather armor
before leaving Klamath.
