Lance Berg - 13 Jan 2004 20:11 GMT Well, its that time of year for me again, unplug the modem, pack up the hardware, and off I go to offline exile. This time looks to be 6 months instead of my normal 3, as I've gotten into a second renaissance festival, this one out near Dallas; 3 months in Arizona isn't enough, so we're doubling it.
Its vaguely possible that there will be a phone line at the Texas location, in which case I'll doubtless be back much sooner... otherwise, well I love EQ, but not enough to run it thru a cell phone.
Funny thing is, I've not played in several days, because I've been playing Neverwinter Nights while downloading more NWN modules, trying to build up a stockpile of stuff to do while I have no modem. Its a decent game, though no EQ, especially not solo; NWN -can- be multiplayer rigged apparantly, and thats a nice thought, but when I have a modem, I play EQ!
I'll have limited internet access, thru the local library in AZ, so I'll probably check in a few times and try to keep up with whats happening in EQ land, GOD and all... and spy on the release of EQ2, if it happens to come out before June (which I doubt).
Other than that little bit of methadone, though, its cold turkey for the next several months.
Oh, and if you want a sword made, too bad, because I'm also not packing my forge. Dunno what I'll miss more, playing EQ or going out to the garage and hammering on 2000 degree pieces of steel... ones a lot less dangerous, with mere virtual death looming in my face, but then, the other is somehow more satisfying and besides, it pays the mortgage.

1.) CIBYS? (Can I Borrow Your Stuff?)
2.) What kind of swords do you make, and do you have a catalog/price sheet? I've been looking for a legitimate (read: not cheap stainless and glitzy fittings that break if the sword happens to fall off the wall mount that's just as cheap as the sword) maker/dealer for a bit now, but nothing is available up here in the NW that I can find.
Oh, and have fun in AZ! It's a DRY heat!

Well, this one might be a little more N than you want, but I think they'll ship over the border. Good guy, does some nice stuff:

I'm looking for a good rapier, and they have blades, but I didn't see any other hardware to go with it. I'll have to bookmark that one, though.

No! Someone I know apprenticed with them for a while. Moved across country for it and everything. He ended up leaving 3 months early because the stuff they made was waaay below standard, and he wasn't learning anything (and a few other reasons that don't really factor into the discussion here). Now, maybe they've changed in the last few years, but Buyer Beware!

I'm sorry to hear that you're going to be out traveling, going to fun sounding festivals, and hopefully making a ton of cash instead of being hunched over a keyboard playing eq... wait a sec. Ok, I'm sorry to hear that you probably won't be able to do both! You will be missed. And when you come back, likely Lenny and I will be able to LDoN with you! Maybe.
Good luck, have fun, and know that you will be missed.

The latency would suck, but have you looked into satellite internet? You could at least work on tradeskills then, or do stuff in the Bazaar, or chat with friends.

I don't recall if you are much of a FPS fan, but have you looked into games like Medal of Honor? Because of the historical setting and mission approach, these feel closer to RPGs than to Quake-like games.
There's a new WWII FPS out whose name I don't recall (I saw someone playing it at work--although it could be a demo and the game might not be out yet) that looked great, and the missions were group oriented--you and a squad of NPC allies that looked like they had pretty good AI.
Actually, if I had several months away from the net, I'd consider getting into more traditional games again. I'd get a copy of Fritz (chess) or a good Go program, and take a few good books on whichever of those games I picked, and go wild. :-)

Sounds to me like you are talking about Call of Duty, and I will completely agree. This game is so much fun. Makes you feel like you are truly in the middle of a war, and yes the AI is very good, there are a few missions where my "men" have taken out targets better than I could. I'd recommend buying this game to just about anyone. I'm not even a huge FPS fan, but I had so much fun playing through this game, so far around 3 times, and playing through it again now.
Great fun, great diversion, great tension release.

The single player is a bit short but it is very challenging even on lower levels so I would expect that the 24 missions on higher levels would be hard work (especially the tank ones). Multiplayer is, well to me its excellent but if you weren't fond of counterstrike I'd suggest a try before you buy if you can. THe multiplay, while it can include mad deathmatch, is based on objective driven play and on destroy, capture etc missions you can end up 20 seconds in dead from a bullet you didnt see and sitting out the next 5 minutes. If that in CS was annoying, look first.

Totally agree on the sentiment on BF1942. What I would love to see is a combo of CoD and BF1942. The detail of shooting (let's face it, sniping in BF is a bit odd sometimes, while in CoD it rules once you get the hang of the realistic floating site) and the strategy and teamplay of BF1942.
We play both games at LAN parties on the weekends every now and again, and both are quite fun.
And yes, BF1942 is an awesome game even if you do suck at it. LOL

AGG - Im still snake bit from SWG - that any game with the phrase "Star Wars" in it makes my stomach turn. Theres been many games of this franchise that has left a bitter taste in my mouth (altho K.O.T.O.R. WAS a cool game).
