the wharf rat - 30 Sep 2005 13:42 GMT The last patch was "to fix an exploit involving creating a character with the name of an existing character" or something like that. Does anyone know what that was about?

You delete a long-standing character and make a new one with the same name and get all the rewards at level 1.

I had 9th level characters with veteran rewards. I don't think there is any limit. The -exploit- might have been the ability to TRANSFER veteran rewards to new character once they had been claimed elsewhere.

I believe it says <leve required: 1> somewhere along the line, as long as the character is old enough.

I hadn't used mine for awhile, but recently a shaman friend and I have been duoing some tough places (DoN missions with a third character in group but not in mission, and most of her 1.5 epic), and having the occasional full health or full mana bonus matters.
But I've only gotten one good bread out of probably 15 breads and wines. I now wonder what the actual percentage is, and if there's any pattern to it. -- Mark Rafn dagon@dagon.net <http://www.dagon.net/>

The one I saw this past week was in the glooming deep tutorial.

AFAIK there is no level limit on vet rewards, just a maximum number of characters you can claim them on. I have them on 3 characters so far, levels 70, 29, and 28.

As far as I'm aware you CAN give the rewards to any character you like - it refers to the length of time you've had the account, not the level of the character.

So if you have 16 toons on one account, regardless of server, only half can claim the reward.
At least that's how I understand it.

So if you have the first two veteran rewards you can tag 2 characters... if you prepaid next year you qualified for an 'extra' level, so if you did that *and* have been playing since the beginning you can tag a maximum of 6 chars.
Next anniversary that will roll over to 7... etc

I'm curious when, and even if, they'll add an 8th and beyond.

You can have all the veteran awards on a level 1 toon - it's not the toon level that matters, it's the account age.
I have a level 20 cleric who enjoys the double XP sessions in Paludal :)
As someone else posted, the exploit was to gain access to NO DROP loot on the corpses of anyone you fancied. A number of Anguish geared toons were stripped before it was spotted.
First warning I saw was on the shaman boards, then copied to the warrior boards. I took great pains to calm down the members of my guild who were up in arms about yet another prime-time patch. If I recall, it took one hour and not the four they were predicting too.

Richard Lawson - 30 Sep 2005 16:50 GMT Yes, it was a very serious exploit.
If someone left a corpse with equipment still on it and logged off, another person could create a level 1 character with the same name and then loot the corpse. You needed to load some stuff into the EQ executable, and someone on the MacroQuest boards posted how you could use MQ to do that. It wasn't specifically an MQ exploit - anyone with a debugger could do the same - but MQ made it easy.
I had several guildmates who lost everything to this exploit, and it took the GM's a couple of days to figure things out and restore their equipment. In the meantime, everyone in my guild was warned never to leave unlooted corpses before logging.
It's fixed now, glad to say.

Yup, I'm assuming the 'create or not create' check was done at the client end (ask server if name exists, if it does, tell user you can't create the character). Get the client to not do the check, and you can create a character with the same name, you could NOT log them on if the other person was on, but once you did log them on ...

I can understand many of the client-side exploits that have turned up before, because of performance requirements.
For example, speed hacks, or being able to see what loot a mob will drop, sort of make sense. They've got hundreds or thousands of people on a server, and need real-time response, so they have to push some things that affect all those players to the client because the servers just aren't fast enough to handle that.
However, character creation is only happening on a few accounts at a time, and it does not need real-time response. There's no reason for the server to have to trust the client on this. If that's what they did, someone really botched the design.
