Boat question

I read a lot of the web site's pages on where to hunt for the lvl of class I
am playing.  Most of them say around 15 - 18 depending on the class that I
should go to OoT and hunt Sirens on the rocks.  Since these are old and we
no longer have boats, how do I get to them?  I tried swiming out that way
with my DRU the other day since he was raising his swimming skills, but I
get so far and he stops.  I did not swim up and down the whole zone to see
if there was a break, but I did go quite far and did not find one.
Are these spots still up and if so, are they good places to go in my high
teens?
TIA

You can normally find translocators on the docks - they are ummmm...short
(gnomes or halflings???)....talk to them and they will send you off

in OOT the nearest you get is sister island when you use the gnome from
freeport ... after that it's a long swim across pretty much the whole of the
zone ... never noticed a break when I swam there, although it was a few
patches ago ... but I did speak to a low lvl in OOT the other day who had to
go to the island with the goblins for OoW task and he made it ok.

try deleting the OOT files and re-patching them ... shouldn't take too long
:)

If getting from one zone to another used to involve getting on a boat,
you will not be able to swim across.  You will get to the edge of your
zone and then, as you saw, you stop.  (Much like hitting the edge of a
zone on land.)

Generally, you can still get from the starting dock to the destination
dock by talking to a "translocator", also called a "boat gnome" for
obvious reasons. :-)  Hail the gnome on the dock and follow the text
instructions to get him/her to transport you to the other zone.

As for Sirens, I haven't heard of Sirens huntable at those levels, but
I don't claim to know all the zones by any means.

Those are Mermaids. Since the boat is gone it is a lot harder to get
to them. Porting out of the zone is pretty tough too, because a guard
for sister island is right next to the Gnome.

Those fish are pretty good eating at those levels.

on the topic of boats...........why did they ever take em out? I  know
people don't use them but it was fun to take them once in a while even
at 65  just for old memories :) any chance they will ever be put back?

They weren't/aren't working. You would get on one, travel along until
you hit a zone, then slide off the boat and stay in the same zone,
having to swim back to shore. Or it would go in a biiiiiiggg circle
and never go anywhere.

I remember it dropped me in the ocean when I was a newb doing the tumpy
tonic thing, I was dumped in the ocean and I just survived the swim to shore
just to be killed by some guy on the Erollisi Island...ouch

The failure mode I remember, as of the DX9 graphics upgrade, was
that when the boat started to leave the dock, the passengers would
stay in place.  It was actually a sort of Wiley Coyote thing,
because I found I could stay standing in midair as long as I didn't
try to move.  As soon as I moved at all, I'd fall into the water.
(When this happened to my druid I said to heck with that, and Gated
out from midair. :-)  You could sometimes get the boats to work by
running in the direction of the boat's movement as it set off, but
it may well be that the "slide off the boat at the zone line" would
then kick in.

I think the developers must've decided that nobody likes the boats
anyway, so they don't see any reason to fix them.  And I do have
to admit that I really like being able to get from Nedaria/Natimbi
directly to Abysmal Sea without waiting an average of several minutes
for a barge; it puts a bank within seconds of every LDON camp.  But
I do wish they'd put back the boats, while maybe leaving the gnomes
in place as well.  (They'd have to tweak the translocators' speech a
bit.)

As others have noted, there are several reasons why the boats are
still useful: (1) Sometimes the docks aren't safe due to faction
or other issues.  (2) Not all boats have equivalent translocators.
(I think you need to be LDON-enabled, which means level 15, to use
the Magus to get to Abysmal Sea.)  (3) Some of the boats were just
neat to ride, once.  A friend has told me I really should ride the
icebreaker ship just to see it, but I can't!

A few times, I have had trouble getting places due to faction and
boats. FV is closed to Iksar because those Guards will slice and dice
you for hailing the Gnome ("Hey thats our gnome! *SMACK* *SMACK*) and
you can't get off Sister Island if the Sisters hate you.

Either tweak the gnome placement, or bring back boats.

I personally found it nice to chat on a boat, met a lot of nice people
that way. I remember my first Field of Bone trip...

Or allow people to zone while swimming...

I think this would be a good thing, at least in certain zones. People
seem to not read the thing on the last page of character creation...
that little hint that tells you how difficult it's going to be to play
that particular character, then want the game changed to accomodate
them... but allowing them to swim through pretty much solves that
problem.
Which reminds me, is it only on Tunare, or is the zone under the SK/NK
bridge one-way every place?

Thats a great idea, too. Though you can also just cast levitate on
yourself and run to the zone (if and when they do make that area
"zone"-able).

Good thing I'm not allergic.

Oh, and bring back boats, yes, only try to make them at least as functional
as they were way back when they were the only option for travel.

They were bugged, not working properly, and given the usage level, I expect
they did not feel it was worth fixing them.

Another problem was that ocean based MOBS could hit you while on the boat,
leaving you defenseless.  I had this happen the first time I took the boat to
Abysmal then to Natimbi where a Tide Feaster was munching my a.s through the
hull of the boat for 120 dmg per munch.
