Sherri Anderson - 29 Aug 2004 04:13 GMT Hi all; I just wanted to introduce myself and tell everyone how helpful this group has been since I discovered it a few days ago. I just began playing EQ and have a Lev 6 Kitty BL on Cazic-Thule who goes by the name of Shierra. I prefer to level slowly and enjoy the game rather than power level so I've been doing all the starter quests...although the buggies are starting to irk me...I need 3 more carapaces for frostweaver....*sighs* The bugs are all green to me now...so I don't even get EXP for them...I butchered them for an hour tonight in Shadeweavers and got nothing but 1 mandible which I didn't even need...I am definitely looking forward to having a pet to help me out...
But anyway..I'm headed to bed now...looking forward to getting to know everyone and any tips, etc would be appreciated....
Anyone playing on CZ feel free to shoot me a tell...I'd love to meet ya

It usually takes a few more days after that to discover that this place is really a cesspool. But, as usenet goes, its a cesspool with a larger ratio of grey water vs black than usual.

Don't do so much of the newbie quests that you get bored. They aren't worth boring yourself.

While I don't play on your server as of yet, I'm sure I will eventually. I have characters all over the place. It's good to see someone new to the game doing quests, and taking time and paying attention to the npcs and what they say.
If you ever have questions ask here, and have fun playing the game if you ever find yourself getting frustrated just turn off the game for a while and go do something else most seem to forget that.
Have fun with your Kitty Cat Beastie

Welcome to the newsgroup!
It's always a bit surprising (but in a good way) to meet someone actually *new* to the game. With all the discussion around here about the most uber gear and the most elaborate strategies for obtaining it from the deepest corners of the game, it's refreshing to hear someone recount their first attempts to get starting gear from some of the starting quests.
Here are some useful links:
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/ (great site for quest and item information)
http://eq.crgaming.com/menu/spells.asp (great site for summary spell lists)
http://www.eqatlas.com/ (great site for maps of the zones)
Between these and this newsgroup, you should be able to find out most anything you need to know about the game.
Good luck and have fun!

Ignore eq.crgaming.com for the most part - they post inaccurate info a lot, and then leave it up.
Another site of interest to a beastlord is:
http://www.beastlords.org
Just a note - class boards seem to bring out some of the more negative people, take any excessive whining on the class boards with a grain of salt.

Bob Perez - 29 Aug 2004 21:55 GMT > You didn't just point a new person at Caster's realm!? Bad Bob! Ah, caster's realm provides inaccurate data? Didn't know that, I referred to it quite a bit as a source for basic information on the various class spell lists. Never encountered any inaccuracies that I'm aware of, but then I didn't use them for anything more than 10,000 foot view lists of the spells. For anything specific there was always Lucy (which I wouldn't refer a new user to).

[snip] Hmm, I've seen one or two minor inaccuracies, but the time and trouble that site has saved me *more* than makes up for that trifle. I'd recommend the site to anyone, and I have several RL friends who (independently of my opinions) use it all the time as well.

I'm reminded of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:
"... it has long supplanted the great Encylopedia Galactica as the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom, for though it has many omissions and contains much that is apocryphal, or at least wildly inaccurate, it scores over the older more pedestrian work in two important respects. First, it is slightly cheaper, and secondly, it has the words DON'T PANIC printed in large friendly letters on its cover."
Well, Lucy and Castersrealm are both free, so there's no cheaper about it... but Castersrealm is much better arranged and friendlier to read, has lots of chatty discussion about the individual spells, and just plain isn't so intimidating.
Wrong? Yes, sometimes. But heck, its a good starting place, and then the more experienced user can dash over to Lucy for a good look at the reality of the situation.

Considering the huge amount of *free* information in there in addition to the spell descriptions - such as research notes, location of spell vendors, epic guides and player strategy guides - the errors are minimal.
Let us not forget that prior to the days of being able to right-click a spell and see its description, castersrealm was indispensable. If, as a new player, you didn't go there, you didn't know what most of the spells DID.

The incorrect spell vendors was what finally drove me away from the site. I also found that the spell descriptions were incorrect for a few of the spells I happened to be interested in looking up.

Agreed. If you have not had a chance to read it yet, you should take a look at "Last Chance to See" as well, it's a nonfiction book by him, written in his wonderful style, regarding seeing some endangered species in various parts of the world as part of a BBC radio show (I think it was).

Just the opposite for me, I was banging my head against the wall trying to find some spell way back when, and it was just not available on the vendor(s) listed on crgaming (then castersrealm). Eventually, I found where it really was available on allakhazam. I stopped using it at that point.

1. Mage summoned earring was listed as an aggro reducer for months. 2. Ranger defense cap still listed at 200 3. Planar renewal shows incorrect hitpoints healed in the list.
That sort of sloppiness leads me to believe there must be many others I haven't noticed.

Only 3, out of how many spell descriptions - several hundreds?? I'd say that was pretty good going, really. There probably are more, but they can't be that big an issue, as they are so insignificant you haven't seen any practical evidence of said error.
I have seen other sites that feature spells specifically for druids, or necros, etc., but I just prefer castersrealm by a long shot.

It's been so long since I've been there, that I'd have to actually look through the shaman spells there again to even know what was wrong. I know some spell descriptions were misleading, and at least two had spell vendors listed incorrectly, which at the time, pre PoP, pre Luclin, was a big deal to have to get all the way over to Firiona Vie, or wherever else to find said spell not available there.

It's been a long time since I've been to crgaming, but, as I recall, they have innacurate information regarding the effects of spells, and regarding where you can purchase them (for vendor purchased spells).

Yep, hunting greenies for a quest piece is perhaps the definitive EQ experience. Good luck with getting your drops! If you want tips and a good selection of EQ links, you might wan to visit the alt.games.everquest FAQ, which I have linked in my sig. A bit wordy, but full of good information and even a tips section.
