Good day-

I love sopping up the A Jus that is the AGE forums.

I'm up to lvl 26- maxed my hid-sneak-backstab skills.  For the life of
me I cannot get a consistent sneak attack.  I have the pause set at 30
which gives me about a 4 sec delay it seems- but it only works once in
a blue moon- and even then it's hardly anything to brag about.

Am I missinging something here.  I have the Fabled Dragon Dirk it
think its 11/21 or something.

How do you have your macro set- or am I just begining to understand
the nerf that is the rogue.

Weapon sounds fine.  As long as you have a mainhand weapon that's
piercing, life is good.  What I'm not clear on is why you need a hotkey
for this?  Perhaps you're thinking of some different kind of 'sneak
attack'?  I just sneak, make sure sneak was successful (con a mob, verify
that I'm moving slow), hide, walk around behind the mob, face the mob's
butt, and mash backstab, and autoattack a teeny fraction of a second
later.

At that level, even with backstab maxed, it's not going to hit every time.

Aye, very true.

I have theory he might have seen the message accompanying a patch a
few weeks ago, which mentioned the Sneak Attack skill giving better
damage from now on.  (Something like that, anyway, can't remember
exactly) I *think* - because of his mention of  a hot key - that he
might be mixing this up with the three separate skills of Sneaking,
Hiding, pausing a little bit and then Backstabbing.

Sneak Attack, a separate skill in its own right, is gained after
buying a book in EC Tunnel and handing it in to a Rogue Guildmaster.

Anyway, hope I helped a fellow Rogue :)

Aha! Well, you helped me, at least.  Didn't think there were any
disciplines with a point until at least mid-40's.  I might have to look
into them for a bunch of my lowbies now. :)

Thanks Zinphandel  :)  I lay no claim to genius though, as I only
cottoned on to them at level 34 - I can't believe I missed out on 14
levels of extra mayhem  :D  For what its worth, the 5 or 6 Rogues I
have chatted to/gamed with since, none of them knew either.

The one at lvl 30 gives your resists a boost for a short while, so I
didn't break my heart over missing that one, but 14 levels when I
could have been Sneak-Attacking...  Bwaaaaaaa!

I'm talking about the specific "sneak attack" discipline.  This is the
level 20 tome rogues get that after hiding for a few seconds, you
should get a sure hit backstab with a damage multiplier.

Mayber the problem is i'm expecting this to be something it isn't.

Ah, right.  I sort of expected a sure-fire hit, too, with a consistent
multiplier.  It has missed a few times, but maybe I was a bit
over-eager to hit that Stab button  :D  I was pretty happy with the
hit over 400, though it is *definitely* not the norm.

Normal backstab damage seems to be (very) roughly anywhere between 90
to 170 (with my biggest hit being 209) with an odd few higher and an
odd few lower.  I still get these sort of figures using Sneak Attack,
too.

I am like you, in all likelihood, expecting it to be something it
isn't :)  Two guildies assure me they saw a character Assassinate for
32,000 damage - I can't wait to be able to do that  :O

I assume you mean you are using a hotbutton with /doability (Sneak) to
get behind a mob, then /pause 30, then /doability (Backstab)?

If so, might you be possibly confusing this with the actual Sneak
Attack skill?  This ability is gained after buying the required book
from Xernic Gutner in East Commons Tunnel  and then handing the book
in to your Rogue Guildmaster.  I can't remember whether you get this
at lvl 20 or 30, dammit... sorry  :(

Anyway, once you get this, you Sneak, press the Sneak Attack ability
button, and you have 30 seconds in which to get behind a mob and
backstab it. You have to have been Sneaking for a few seconds prior to
Backstabbing, and it uses a fair bit of endurance/stamina in the
process, which returns of course, but not that rapidly.  The ability
can be triggered every 30 seconds.

Even using this, I find backstab damage varies.  Up to now it has
caused damage anywhere from about 80 to 400+ at lvl 36 (Backstab is
only 3 points off max), but I am told it can be *much* higher.  I
haven't got lucky yet either  :)

I've been trying to get this working too .... have a macro setup which works
fine if it's the first time I attack a mob. The same macro however doesn't
work if used during a fight, I get a message saying I haven't been hidden
long enough even thought hide was successful and it's the same delay before
the /disc sneak line in the hotkey.

Delay can be lagged. I usually use a few seconds manually.

You can only use the sneak attack line at the start of a fight - you need to
be agro free to hide (if you have any agro, you will just evade).  That
means if there's a multi-mob pull, you can only sneak attack on the first
one.

No need for a macro... just get into the habit of hitting sneak and hide
after a mob dies... so you'll be hidden and ready when the next mob gets
there.  Once it does, get behind it, hit sneak attack, then backstab and
evade/autoattack.

I second that.  It took me a while to figure this out.

Sneak, hide then sneak attack.

At level 47 I did a critical hit for 770.

This was the info I was looking for.  I need the hot botton spot i was
using for this.
