Soft Hitters?

Chuck - 29 Mar 2004 21:58 GMT Hello,
I've been grouping for the last 12 levels straight, and my combat skills have suffered. They weren't all that hot to begin with, but now they are so low I can't even hit the mobs we're fighting often enough to skill up between medding and casting. So I need to find some nice soft hitting very light blues to skill up on. I'm level 31 now and was hoping someone had some suggestions. Preferably something that doesn?t hit too hard, and isn't too social. I've been soloing the mammoths in Ever Frost occasionally over the last few levels, but they hit really hard. :)

42 - 29 Mar 2004 22:18 GMT You aren't going to get skill ups often from light blues.
Find a group taking evens or yellows and ask if you can whack on them for weapon skillups. (I'd stick to creatures right around your level... they seem to work best for skillups.)
It sounds like you are a caster so their is no chance you will KS them and they should be fine with it. (but don't be an a.s about it if they aren't... find another group.)
If you happen to be a knight and there is a chance you can KS, or 'threaten to KS' offer to hold back until the mob is less than 75%.
And in these situations your on your own for healing, buffing, etc (which if you are careful you won't need). Don't expect the group to take care of you, don't loot, don't get in the way, don't taunt, etc. Try to be as unobtrusive about it as possible.
You might want to arrange to get your stats buffed, to help with skillup frequency.
Other than that, look for places where full groups chain single pull pure melee mobs to a single spot.

(but don't be an a.s about it if >they aren't... find another group.) Oh, yeah forgot to mention that. I'm a Shammy, so they probably wouldn't get too upset if I did that. I used to do that as a ranger to work on my archery, but forgot all about it.
I'm sure I could find some group that wouldn't mind letting me whack on some mobs in exchange for some buffs. On the other hand, they'd probably just invite me into the group, and then I'm in the same boat all over again. :) (Which all things considered isn't a bad boat to be in...)

You could always eat a few unrezzed deaths if they 'make' you group with them :p
But yeah thats why I recommended busy areas with full groups. It maximizes skillup potential and minimizes 'awkward invite issues' :)

My melee had lagged badly on my shaman, at level 65, I finally rectified my piercing and offense situation. I went to Fungus Grove, and soloed a bunch of low dark blue mobs. Of course, now that I bagged my epic for a 1hb, I am working on raising that. It was at 60 when I got the 1hb weapon, up to 88 so far just from smacking mobs on a raid.

For priest classes that's a lot more valuable than Offense or weapon skills in the long run. At level 31 you've got a perfect opportunity to work on this: needlites in Echo Caverns. They'll still be dark blue to you but not by much (they're level 25-ish). Needlites hit VERY fast but rather low damage per hit making them perfect for Defense training.

I just took a Level 33 Cleric there to max out defensive skills as I had never been hit prior to that ( imagin that a cleric sitting on his but medding never getting to fight ) Took about 2 hours of soloing to max out all my Defensive and Offensive skills. On a side note loot every Stinger Wing and Leg. these sell well in the Bazaar after you do the faction quest, maybe even before. I mad almost 250 Plat off those drops, not including the Needlite Queens drops.

[quoted text clipped - 5 lines] >A shaman has a tough time ignoring defense skills. My defense was capped >long before I capped my offensive skills. Actually, My Dodge skill is capped, but my Defense skill was 88 (at level 31). I'm pretty good at avoiding agro and still doing my job. I rarely get agro unless it's from a pop or add while I'm medding. (And I never try to get Agro by doing the same thing twice, more than can be said for a few Wizards I grouped with in the past, may their souls rest in peace.) Partly because I'm rather careful about when I Heal, DoT, and Nuke, and also partly because I've been grouped with some really excellent groups, full of people that know what they are supposed to be doing, at least most of them. A big change from the last time I played (nearly 2 years ago).
An example was last Saturday, grouped in the Overthere for about 4 hours or so I think, with the members changing every so often. Chain pulling Mobs red to me (and yellow or even to most everyone else). A Monk was our main tank for most of the time, I was Main Healer for the entire time, and the backup healer, spent his mana healing me (from Canni-Dancing) or Nuking and DoTing. Didn't go OOM once, didn't gain agro once, gained 2 and 1/2 levels. No one died. A great group of about 12 members for varying lengths of time.
However as for my skill-ups, I went to High Keep, I died once, and I'm pretty sure trained a group. (Caused a death I think, but some people said that it was their puller that pulled too many when they needed to med, so I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure I agroed 2 blues accidentally, but shortly thereafter 4 more showed up.) Anyway, after apologizing to them and everyone else, I spent about 3 hours there buffing and healing the groups as my penance. I made 6, count 'em 6, Piercing skillups. I seemed to get them faster on the blue mobs, if only because I hit them more often. I was hitting about once in 5 to 10 try?s on the blues, and once in about 15 to 20 on the yellows. My offense went up by about 10. My defense however went up by about 25, because I was taking a pretty serious beating from many of the blues that popped around me.
I guess I just have to keep at it.

When grouped, barring adds that I need to handle, I don't get hit much.

High Pass Keep can be good for that too. I asked if I could join in on mobs to get my 1 hand slash up (thief who wants to branch out a bit) and I went from 0 to 38 in one session.
I got asked to group, too, and gained 2 levels! Oh, and never pickpocketed once, out of sheer gratitude :))

A good way to get skillups is to find a shammy buddy that is above 60 with a compliant pet that is red to you. /duel and thwack on the pet until you are bored silly. The shammy buddy pops you heals, haste and the like as appropriate as you take on his pet. Did this with a baby berzerker alt to top off all my weapons skills. Was the most boring 4 or 5 hours with only a friends companionship and chatting to make it tolerable. Maxed out 2HB, 2HP and 2HS nicely, also maxed out offense, defense, and other assorted skills, but only got kick and frenzy to 50.

Kept a cleric nearby to heal, though, as we were well below 60 at the time.
