Hi gang - I posted a message about the dreaded black screen of death when
going into windows mode on the Allakazam site.  This fix was posted in the
newsgroup - I tried it and it works for me:

I was having the same problem, using winXP and GeForce FX5600.  Alt-tab was
broken and if I switched between window and full screen it would go black
and then crash.

I found this fix on the EQ boards and this worked for me:

Here is what I did this morning, I hope it helps you. Right click on the
desktop and open up the Settings on the display properties pop-up. Click the
advanced button and then the tab for my video card (GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE). I
selected the Performance and Quality Section of that area and unselected the
"application-controlled" check box on the Antialiasing settings.

Here is the link to the thread if you want to read it all:

Basically, this turns off antialiasing (I left the antialiasing slider at
"0"). I have no idea why this worked. I assume they have incompatible code
for many of our video cards and that once they fix it on their end, we can
turn antialiasing back on.

Hope this helps!

Wow... switches faster for me than it ever has in the past, ever since
they instigated it. Thanks for that one!

Word of warning - this fix worked the first 5 or 6 times I tried it, however
i'm now back to getting the black screen of death again.  No idea why.

Perhaps the overnight patch will address the problem.....

I'll have to give it a try when I get home, thanks for the info.

I hope you read further down the thread... lol
Anyway, it <appears> (so far) that it's fixed. Now if they can just
fix the spawn....

Yes, I did read that after posting.  Will give it a try and see how it
goes.

To avoid the inevitable misunderstanding, when I said it <appears>
fixed, I meant from the patch. I turned my "application controlled"
selection back on. You might want to try it straight before you make
any adjustments.
Of course, it appeared that this fix worked, too, at first, so I'm
going to take it easy for a while when I switch to windowed mode.

What I've found is that any time I restart EQ, I can switch to/from
windowed mode and/or free up the mouse (ctrl-shift-R) in windowed mode
so I can minimize EQ and get to other windows.  But after I do it a
few times, or maybe after I switch between toons too many times, etc.,
it reaches a point where the next attempt yields black screen & death.

So I suspect that some of these attempted fixes appear to work just
because the people trying them end up restarting EQ to try them out.
