I'm new to the game and my character is a dark elf necromancer.  Obviously,
many of the places I go I get killed on sight by the guards.  So my question
is this:
About what level do I have to get to to be able to defeat a guard?

depends on the level of the guard ... some are in the 20s IIRC others,
especially those around city gates, tend to be in the 40s & 50s ... if I
remember right the 2 guards in west commons are fairly low

Of course everything is in the last place you look!
Why would you find it and keep on looking??!

Depends.  The 'gate guards', or the guards protecting the towns were
buffed up after release, to stop people from killing them, and leaving
the newbies with nowhere to run with their trains.  However, the guards
patrolling the cities are fairly low level.  The lowest looks to be ~16,
while the other (non gate) guards tend to hover around ~30.

Oh, and an aside.  Everyone and their mother is a dark elf necromancer.
Be cute and scaly!

The exp penalty and regen are not worth losing all that INT IMHO

For a newbie, that's a valid point.  Well, kinda.  I say that because
it's trival to gain plat these days...at least off of silks/pelts/etc.

Should be enough to get some INT gear off the bat, though.

Some of the easiest to kill individually are the ones in East Commonlands
near the border to West Freeport.  The problem is that when you attack one,
all four come.  They don't have more than 600 hp, so if you really want to
see one of their corpses, once you get a 600hp DoT you can cast it on one of
them and run for the zone.  When you zone back, they'll either be back at
their positions or one the way back, with the one that was DoT'ed on his way
to his grave.  You won't get xp that way, but once you have them down to one
left you've broken the spawn and can camp them.  Alternately, if you can FD
pull one away from the pack, kill him and move the next.

There is a 4th (or so) level guard in Qeynos Catacombs. Guards that
are actually guarding range from 15-65+, the guards at the bridge in
Nek forest are lower end, but you probably don't want to kill them.
Nothing special to guards though.

I would go and experiment in Timorous Deep, at the wood elf village.
That will give you a good taste for ravaging a city. Expect to FD a
few time hehe.

When you get up there you can start doing some Felwithe Raids, those
Koada'dal are good exp and decent loot.

Guard Yalroen in qeynos hills is L11.

The guards you are probably going to see most often will range in
level from around 10 or 12 to as high as 50 or 55.  The problem is
that they tend to be undercons.  In other words they are pretty tough
for their level.

As a Dark Elf, I assume you are probably going to be hunting the
guards around Freeport.  (I also assume you do not want to kill Dark
Elf guards...probably a bad idea).  Out there in East Commonlands you
can find several guards that you can *probably* kill around level 12,
maybe lower or maybe higher.  But I suggest you get yourself a SoW
cast on you before you try so that if your snare is resisted you can
run to the zoneline or get far enough away to try and snare again.

Also remember that some guards are not meant to be killed.  There is a
guard in North Ro (near East Freeport) that can barely be soloed by
*some* level 65 people, even though he may be only level 20 or 30.
(He regenerates probably 1000 hitpoints per tic).  Gate guards are
difficult to kill as well (*very* high resists).  They are there to
keep newbies alive after all.

Depends on the guard. There are some weak guards in qeynos (and some very
strong ones).

It felt so good the first time I kill that ranger byatch in qeynos hill :-)
Her gay partner got eaten by a bear? Too bad I don't have a chance to feed
him to my pet.

There is a level 4 or 5 newbie guard in qeynos hill too. I forgot his name,
but if you stay near the tower, you can over heard him say something like
"I'll go partrol the hill now" or something like that. He drops a card on
the ground once in a while. Go train 2 giant rats to him and watch him die,
lol.

Poor Guard Cheslin!!!!  LOL

He is actually a part of some little newbie quest wherein you follow him on his
circuit around QH and keep him alive and he will drop 4 cards.  You pick them
up and then give them to... um....  I wanna say his Dad In Qeynos.  Dunno, I
always got bored with trying to do this one and never got all 4 cards before
allowing him to be eaten by a rat or a gnoll...  LOL

The two guards outside the cottage in QH are also fairly low level, but I
believe you will raise faction with the good guards if you kill them...  They
are for the Monk Newbie quest.

Personally, my goal is Nash.  That bastage is going to pay for all the times he
has KS'd me.  LOL

that IS his real name) conspiratorially whispered:

The Sarge in EC is on a few hitlists too, I wager.

"That's it, you're outta here!"

OHHH I forgot about that guy...

*puts him down on her hitlist as well*

Bwahaha!  :)

Very low.

There is a wandering guard in Qeynos hills who drops cards, guard
cheslin. I think you can be very low level and kill him (maybe around
level 12?)

Then there are some guards in West Karana who I think are for the
killing of players around level 25. They are at various towers, make
sure you consider them since some are higher level.  One of the towers
has an NPC who is for the bard epic there as well, who will assist the
guards. So scope it out first.

Other than that, there are not very many guard types in the wild who
are very killable. Gate guards/newbie guards were severely buffed at
one point.

The buffed Freeport gate guards are just slightly tougher than an
Overthere cliff golem, but have 2-3x the hps.  Took my ogre war 20
minutes to finish one.  Many many ch's from my cleric :)  C3 or decent
FT a requirement.
