Today I Cuen (an 8th lvl mage) was wandering around the Plane of
Knowledge when I say to guys staring at a reflecting pool.

They told me that the pools hold great magic, and that another guy had
said he would reveal the secrets to them if they would complete a few
tasks.

These two guys were not the adventurous type, and so asked if I would
speak to the man and see if I might do the adventure for them.  They
told me I might be rewarded.

I agreed and went to go and see the man who coincidently was only a
few hundred feet away at another reflecting pool.

He said that he didn't want to talk unless I gave him some Sarnak
Blood.

I went down to the bad part of town and found a nice Iksar who
happened to be selling Sarnak Blood for only a few gold pieces so I
bought one and brought it to my new friend.

He said that all he new of the pools what what he had learned from
Myrist, and said that if I took this letter to his friend at the
library that he would give me the book.

Sure enough his friend the Vicar at the library new of the book, but
said he had accidently loaned that instead of a different book to a
friend, and asked if I might want to find his friend and trade him
books.

I agreed thinking his friend MUST be nearby.

I searched high and low for the man and could no find him anywhere,
finally I shouted across the town, WHERE is this guy?

An answer came to me... He's hiding in the Temple of Droga.
The name struck fear into my heart.
But a mages word is his bond, and so I asked how to get there.

Everyone said, you shouldn't go in there until you are MUCH older.

But I'm a mage, I have invis and hey if I die I don't loose anything
yet, so I got directions, asked for a sow and set off for the frontier
mountains.

As soon as I got to the frontier mountains I was confronted by a
GIANT, and he wanted to taste my elven bones in his soup, my invis
dropped, and he chased me around the zone.

I had no idea where this temple was and just as I was about to give up
I ran past a bunch of goblins into a cave and sure enough I was in The
Temple of Droga...

I immediatly castr invis on myself and remembering what someone said
"If your ever lost in a dungeon stay on the right and eventually
you'll get out."  I went ahead and followed the wall right.

I must've only walked a few steps when I fell into a deep hole, and
took ALOT of damage.  SO much so that I was very lucky I think to have
had a +5 STA ring on that a friend had given me cuz I only had 1% of
my HP left.

My invis dropped a few steps later but I was in a fairly safe looking
place so I cast it again.

I kept running around the right hand side of the wall, hoping and
praying I could find some stairs or something to no avail, I was
praying to all that is holly that nothing could see through my invis,
and that my invis never dropped I ran as fast as my broken legs could
carry me.

Just as I was considering gating the heck out of there, I passed
inside a wall, and there was the guy.  I handed him the book, he
thanked me and handed me another book, I noticed I had just grown a
little older, and about that time, I hear the goblins comming.

I recast invis and ran for my life, eventually I found an exit, but my
invis had dropped I saw them swing but I guess I was moving too fast
because they couldn't hit me.

Soon I was in the frontier mountains, that giant decided he still
wanted me and chased me ALL the way back to the Over There, where a
few Sarnaks promptly picked up the chase and I ran, with my little
heart pounding all the way to my protal wich would take me back into
safety in the Plane of Knowledge.

When I got the plane of knowledge I had about 5 hit points left, and I
walked slowly to the first 2 people I saw, and handed him the book of
which he sought.

Then he said thank you, and I was again a little older.

He gave me some money, and when I checked deep into my bags, he had
placed a beautiful fine cut diamond inlaid mask.

It was just exactly what I needed after such a long and heart stopping
journey.

I handed him the book

Congratulations! I did that quest at about 30, and was scared to death
worrying that my invis would drop, too.  You got a nice item, and you should
visit Alla's and look up the rest of those PoK quests.  There are about 6 or
so,and they all have a nice focus item on them.  Great for mid range
characters.

Good luck, and thanks for the story!

Well, it's not like you have anything to lose.  Zero xp loss, no corpse run
death.

Still fun! One of my druids did it at level 7. My mage did it at 19.

Actually, it's not stupid at all.  It's known as the "right-hand-rule"
for maze solving, and it's an old, old technique.

From http://gnosis.cx/publish/programming/quantum_computer.txt:

Let's imagine a problem:  we need to find a path through a
complicated maze.  Every time we follow one path, we soon come
across new branches.  Even knowing there is *some* path out, it
is easy to get lost.  A well-known "algorithm" for walking a
maze is the "right hand rule"--follow the right hand wall until
you are out (including around dead-ends).  This may not be a
very short path, but at least you will not repeat the same
corridors.  In computer terms, this rule is also known as
 "recursive tree descent."

More technical treatment at: http://www.astrolog.org/labyrnth/algrithm.htm

Wall follower: This is another simple Maze solving algorithm.
It focuses on you, is always very fast, and uses no extra memory.
Start following passages, and whenever you reach a junction always
turn right (or left). Equivalent to a human solving a Maze by
putting their hand on the right (or left) wall and leaving it
there as they walk through. If you like you can mark what cells
you've visited, and what cells you've visited twice, where at
the end you can retrace the solution by following those cells
visited once. This method won't necessarily find the shortest
solution, and it doesn't work at all when the goal is in the
center of the Maze and there's a closed circuit surrounding it,
as you'll go around the center and eventually find yourself
back at the beginning. Wall following can be done in a deterministic
way in a 3D Maze by projecting the 3D passages onto the 2D plane,
e.g. by pretending up passages actually lead northwest and down
lead southeast, and then applying normal wall following rules.

This image: http://www.astrolog.org/labyrnth/sample/follow.gif
shows how the right-hand-rule traverses a complex maze from the
"entrance" in the lower right to the "exit" in the upper left.
The red path is the "shortest route", the gray paths are "side trip"
areas that are not necessary, but still traversed by the algorithm.

The same page describes 10 other methods as well.

It's not stupid, but it is simple.  Would be much smarter to download a map
and take the short path.  Also it will not necessarily work when there are
dropoffs, and will almost never work for finding a location inside a maze
which is what the OP used it for.  He got lucky.

I love this quest. About once a month I take any lvl 1-9 (5-9 after i help
them get some XP so they don't die from the fall) that want to go on this
quest.  I think the first time I was running this quest I had about 35
players with me.  I always have them bind at the FM/OT zone, just in case we
loose someone on the way.  If i have players that are over lvl 10 that want
to do this quest I take my cleric with me and Rez them at the target mob,
should the invis wear off at the wrong time.

Other easy quests from PoK Are:
Fine Antique Ring which has Mana Preservation II on it.
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=2193
And Fine Antique Corset Which also has Spell haste for those that don't want
to give up there Face slots.
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=2198
Averything in these 2 can be bought in the bazaar/colected by a lvl 30+ in
under an hour.
