I have a new 2.1 Logitech speaker system with a Gigabyte MB and onboard
sound - Realtek ALC655 Codec (or something).

My question is, am I better off with a better sound card, like a $50 or $100
soundblaster card? Or are improvements only noticed on multi speaker setups?

Thanks.

Most people with a little experience would say yes,
But I happen to have the Realtek just above yours,
onboard Realtek ALC850 on a P4P800E delux ..It's absolutely flawless.

Upgrade only if you notice a problem, but chances are you'll be fine.
If you do upgrade. Go for an Audigy-1, low price.

Most folks think louder is better, but I have a SB Live card ($20) and some
Sony extra-bass earbuds ($15).  Very cheap and sounds much better than any
PC speaker system I've heard or owned.

Plus, I am showing some courtesy/compassion to my wife and neighbors (can
turn up the volume and tune them out as well).

Virtually not Bob;
The difference in quality between brands are 'marginal' to the common user.
We're talking about S/N ratio about 90Db~100Db.. Or so.. Sometimes the
difference is only from the back channel DAC, sometimes the quality or their
ADC.
You can do as I did and check out the specs:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/search/search.aspx?search=655
(Typical S/N ratio 86Db ... Not bad, unless you wear 300$ headphones.)
A probable match for your Gigabyte board is:
GYGABYTE 8I848P

It's mostly a matter of 'features'.. Better DSP effects, less CPU use.
In teh case of Realtek more recent 6 to 8 channel audio; The quality is very comparable
to an 5.1 or even an Audigy.. Which would not be recommended to master
commercial stuff.

In other words.. If you ear fine and don't get any 'ill' effects... Keep it.
If you do notice problems think of low cost and you'll be fine.
Go with the flow Bob,
