What happened to the VR suits we were supposed to have by now? Several
companies started making VR glasses and gloves back in the mid 90's with the
promise that we'd have full VR body suits soon. They were supposed to have
full tactile feedback. True virtual reality, almost like being there. When
will I be able to use one to play Doom 3 with one?

Can you imagine the state of peoples houses when they take the helmet or
glasses off!!!
OR try to explain to your parents why your walls have 12" foot holes in them
and all the windows smashed?
OR the Police when they say they've had a call about a "disturbance" in the
house next door?
OR the amount of people being garrotted from the cables as they try to run
away from a HELL NIGHT as fast as they can.
Sounds like fun to me!!!! Where can I get one? :-)

Oh yeah. You really want full tactile feedback while playing Doom3.
If you want to simulate being in close range of an imp, strap 30 live
alley cats to your naked body and take a cold shower. That'll be a start.

Here's something to try if Doom 3 has 360-degree stereo (I tried this with
Half-Life, and it works great!) Get a decent sized monitor (any size will
do, really, but the bigger the screen the better), turn off all the lights
so you're in the dark except for the monitor. Plug in stereo headphones -
get the ones with the big, bulky earpads so that all other outside noise is
inaudible. Finally, set the mouse to be the controller for the gun, so you
have something in your hand to click just like in a real VR game. Now play
the game. It's as close to virtual reality as you could get for cheap,
because your senses are now almost completely focused inside the game.
Try it, it's awesome!

I agree....I have a huge monitor and a pair of the best headphones ever
made, Koss Pro4AAA, and I get so drawn into the game that everything
else just fades into obscurity for a while. It rulz

Can you get a surround sound effect with headphones?

Yeah...but it's only so-so. I take the headphones off when I want to use
surround.

Isn't this the way most Doomer play ?
Unless you are fortunate enough to have the house for yourself.
Playing Doom? on a500Watts Home theater is enough to have
the cops at your door. Or the rest of the family run to church...
Don't you think :)

Was reading the specs on the SoundBlaster Audigy2 series of sound cards.
Apparently there is a "Virtual Surround" feature for 2-Channel speakers and
headphones that the SoundBlaster Live doesn't have. Been thinking about
upgrading just for this feature alone.

The only problem with headphones is that you miss the ambient noises - like
my cat hiding behind my chair and then scratching at the floor ... I nearly
had a heart attack. I had to turn Doom off for a bit and take a break after
that :\
