Unusable horadric staff (hell difficulty)

Stephen van Ham - 27 Nov 2003 09:42 GMT Anyone want to fill me in on how a horadric staff collected in hell difficulty is unusable IN hell difficulty?
One thing I should note here... since assembling the staff in question a couple of weeks ago (what can I say, sometimes I do quests in fits and starts), it has been sitting in my stash while I gathered the motivation to make the trek through tal rasha's tomb. With Lightning Fury costing about 22 mana per throw, and with only about 150 mana total (I need to find some bahamut's rings for this girl ASAP), even the most mundane of creature clots takes an *entire* belt of mana potions to destroy (granted, half the inhabitants of the tomb seemed to be champions and masters to doorway desync). Needless to say, the trip through the tomb was long and challenging on my patience (about 45 minutes of throw, return to town, throw, return to town...). And living up to my reputation of being a Carl of no mean stature, I found the bug hole in the very last place I looked (did I even need to mention that?)
In the following days since the hell staff was assembled, I have been into a number of normal and nightmare difficulty games, for muling and magic finding purposes. The staff has been sitting in her stash in the whole time. It has not been moved around in her inventory, nor has it been dropped to the ground. Attempts to now use said hell staff at the hell orifice result in my zon regretfully informing me, 'I can't' and 'Impossible'. And yes, I have completed every quest along the way (the Summoner was a somewhat surprising pushover).
Wait, let me guess... those forays into lower difficulty games have made Blizzard's state of the arc rush detection kick in and label me a cheese monkey. Is this what has happened? Surely they couldn't be that stupid. I really really don't have any inclination to make another trip through the maggot lair and viper temple to assemble a new staff, to find out for sure.

From other, similar, anecdotes, this seems to exactly be the case.

I've had the same thing happen to me. Took me so many public games just to assemble the damned staff and in an instant it turned useless. Oh well... I just muled it over and my next new char used it in norm with no problems.

There are three reasons why the staff won't work
1. there is no carl in the staff 2. there is no carl in the player 3. the player took the staff to other levels
Stephen van Ham - 27 Nov 2003 22:55 GMT Yo dawg, on Fri, 28 Nov 2003 09:17:26 +1100, "tcells" <tcells1@yahoo.com> came 'round looking for action. Check it:

>There are three reasons why the staff won't work
>1. there is no carl in the staff That's between Carl and his staff, thanks.
>2. there is no carl in the player Hmmmm, if there was no Carl in the player, I would have finished the quest, finished the following three acts, and then power leveled to 95.
>3. the player took the staff to other levels Okay. Thanks all. I was wondering there if there was meant to be a little 'Expires in 10 days' message in the information box for the staff, but blizz forgot to include it in all the rush to complete and 'QA' the patch.
Does this mean the staff my throw barb has collected in nightmare is also going to be unusable, since he's been into a muling game since?
Hopefully they'll correct this sort of nonsense for beta 4.

Foo, Tito and I all have characters who just collected the staff (in Hell) but have not yet gotten the headpiece. If you want to wait a bit, we can all get together for Duriel this weekend at some point and do Duriel together so that you won't have to retrieve the parts again.

basically the carl is actually an insidious evolutional twist of barrel hugging.

But at least my eyesight is coming back. I still have to use "magnify" all the time in order to read off the computer screen, but that's because it's uncomfortable to have my face five inches from the screen. I can read books if I hold 'em right against my face, but I start to get eye strain after a little while of that. OTOH, I'm no longer overly sensitive to light, and the infection has passed. I'm just waiting now for my eyes to heal up and become clear again. The left one is about 1/3 as bad as the right one, so I do more of my reading/seeing with that one. My right eye is pretty much useless for anything other that determining movement. The potential girlfriend and I have postponed the date until I can drive again. But during my blindness we've spent a lot of time together, so life is good. (: I roadmed around a bit in D2 last night, but I'm still a little blind for that.

Oh, and I know what you're going through with that eye infection, the same thing happened to me. I Wore my contacts for about 2 weeks too long, and just about blinded myself.
Good luck!
