My super loan pc arrived today. (busy setting up an uber Maya animation
pc that can handle rotating 300K polygons on a screen. Which it does,
its unreal and quake framerates are off the charts.

The specs are

Hyperthreaded Pentium 4 CPU
2Gigs of ddr400 memory
256MB fx5600 nvidia Grapics card
SATA hardrive

Killied shenk, Frame rate drops to an average of 3fps, going as low as
1fps.

I am sorry but thats in the realm of bloody pathetic.

Shenk's death scene is coded poorly. The program just can't draw the
explosions and the sprites on the screen at the same time. Same CPU, same
memory, Radeon 9800, RAID-0 Raptor SATA drives, same problem. I'm tempted to
build an antique 440BX system with a Voodoo in it just for these types of
programs.

I think coded poorly is probably the most generous way of putting it. If
you think of the time they spent in bringing out the bug infested patch
that they did as opposed to actually making 1.09 bugfree, and optimised
(And beleive me in that time they could have easily ported it to the
quake or unreal engine and run it at 200fps), its a total no brainer. In
fact I think the only brains at blizzard is Rob who worked on getting
the Mac open GL working so nicely. The rest I think only have brains to
prevent thier eyeballs from rolling around in that apparently huge empty
space between their ears.

I was actually quite surprised they simply hadn't yanked stuff like that in
1.10.  Maybe have the fire show when the quest is completed but who needs it
every time?

Wouldest thou welcome an option to turn this off? Maphack did this for us
non Mac users. I thought you were a Mac user...

It depends on which machine I have to hand. I have been doing a fair
amount of juggling in order to save for my g5. I put together very quick
machines to sell for a profit. The one I am burning in is the above
mentioned PC.

Other than the CPU and video card, that's a nice system.

The CPU and the Video card are there for specific Applications. The
person uses a Very complex GIS system which has issues with Xeon
Processors, and the new generation of HT processors (which is why its
down at 2.4 and not 3.2.

The graphics card (one you apply the Hardware planes overlay patch is
actually faster then most of the Workstation spec (ie Fire gl/ quadro's)
Only Wildcats are better , but they dont have decent GIS drivers and are
hugely expensive.

The main point is. This is a Game designed to run on a P2 system as I
recall.

Oh Just in case you are an AMD and ATI fan (which do have higher
benchmarks), they suffer from the same issues as the HT chips, their 3d
Math algorithyms are not exact enough.

And this is the game that lists requirements as a P233 w/64 megs of
RAM. Yeah, maybe if all you're doing is standing in the Rogue Camp!

EB, sick of the damn thing lagging like buggery on both a Duron 1200
and an Athlon XP 2100+...

And this is something I don't quite understand. Unless I am on the
server, I play on a K7-900 with a 32 meg ATI rage and a monster 3d (8
meg) secondary card, and I never get that bad about Shenk.

Now, for those who do, here is a little tip:

Just as the fat slob is about to die, cast a TP. The INSTANT he eats
grass, step through the portal and come RIGHT back again. You will not
see all the falling snowballs that cause the afore-mentioned lag, and
if you get good at it, you can get back and snag the drops before
anyone can even move.

Oh, it's not just Shenk, it's throughout the game. Going through a
portal or waypoint, leaving town, fighting a pack of monsters,
summoning a minion, resurrecting a merc...

I usually get ~10-15 fps when the crap comes down and I'm standing right next to where he
died.
