Mark - 27 Mar 2008 02:33 GMT Hey There
Well I'm back to D2/LoD again after a foray into, gasp, other games.
Played Travian for a while. A very fun game. But it's quite insidious. It starts off as simple and quite slow, but it grows and takes up more and more of your time. Till it pushes out all your other gaming time and starts taking time away from real world activities. I was running an alliance with almost 200 members. We were late starters to the world so we were far out classed by the major powers of the world. But the world was so evenly divided that we were in a power position. I ended up spending the vast majority of my time running the alliance and playing world politics, and didn't have time to actually play my cities and properly manage my armies. And RL was being neglected. So I transferred my account to someone else in the alliance and walked away clod turkey. Overall it was a VERY good time, but just too much of a time commitment to continue.
I then moved to Civilization III. An old game, but I had never tried the Civ series. It is another good game. A turn based simulation rather than a Real Time Simulation like Starcraft/Warcraft. But it's more diplomacy and culturally driven than a pure wargame, so it's not exactly my cup of tea. I like a more hardcore wargame. But I still enjoy it. I just play a Communist government and wage constant war.
So I came back to a comfortable old friend. And I was quite happily amazed to see that I could recover all my expired characters. Something new? It's wonderful because I had just re-established the basics in the new ladder before I wandered off. I have a MF Sorc to run Hell Mephy for items, a Trapper to run Keys, a Skellimancer to turn Keys into Organs, a Smiter to hunt Clones and run UT, and the usual slaves; Chanter and BO Barb. So with all the basics I get to come back and play fun toons. So I started a Bowler. I played one with Spook and Cinna last ladder, and he was a blast, so I want to try to Guardian one now. I blasted him through Normal and started to actually play him in NM. A1 went well, no real problems. The little monsters take multiple hits from my Boulders and generally die with 1 or 2. Bigger monsters take more, but with a merc and Grizzly to keep them busy it's no problem. I'm sure by late NM early Hell it's going to get tough, but that's what I'm looking for.
So it's good to be back to D2/LoD, and it's good to see most of the usual suspects still posting here. If anyone is playing EHCL, give me a yell and I'll keep an eye out for you. I've run into Art a few times already.

Mark, great to see you back. :-)
Yeah, the BCMs changed it so that expired characters are still accessable unless someone else uses the name, in which case they're unrecoverable. Being the BCMs I wouldn't want to rely on it too much though. You're one of the lucky ones, more than one person has returned to the fold and deleted their 'expired' chars, only to hear the news...
Welcome back.

I've been able to recover the occasional 'expired' character in the past. So it's de rigueur to at least attempt to activate them before deleting. So that's why I was so delighted to get all of my toons back. Even the ones from last ladder on West (so if anyone wants non-Ladder HC stuff, speak up. Bueller?).

Glad you're back. Wherever we are. -dave

Good to see another old timer still lurking about.

Best, Mark.

Mark - 28 Mar 2008 01:18 GMT > Hi Mark! Glad to hear from you again. There's still life here in the West > too! At least at the beginning of this ladder season, East was much more populated that what I saw on West in the previous ladder. And I have played in the odd Basin game since coming back, there's still at least one HC game going there every time I have looked.
Now if I hadn't been able to recover all my 'wealth' (LOL) from the early part of the season I'd certainly have considered moving back West. But I have just enough stuff on East that I can now play fun characters, instead of just the cookie cutter power builds.

And the design team had credibility. So I'm surprised to hear that it's a flop. That buggy, eh? Not even something they patched up shortly after release to fix it up? Just unplayable?

Any reports on that game? Much more interesting is perhaps Mythos, by the same guys:
www.mythos.com
They recently released Zone 3 (similar to an Act in Diablo II), with an ice/snow theme. They also released the whole Crafting part of it, which is _very_ complex, involving three trees of skills (separate from your main skills), lots of ingredients, and the possibilities to make many many things.
It's all still a bit buggy, but the biggest problems have been ironed out with an even more recent patch.
It's currently in Closed Beta, with no more invites available, but it will go to Open Beta soon. So they say.
Google this group on 'Mythos' to find some reports by myself, and others, about this game, which will incidentally be free to play. See the forums about Mythos for how they think to make money off it.
Regards,
Patrick.
Mark - 29 Mar 2008 02:04 GMT > Much more interesting is perhaps Mythos, by the same guys: Hadn't heard about that one. By Flagship too. Hmm, I followed the development of Hellgate a little bit, but never saw a mention of Mythos on their website.
I didn't look around at that link too much. But what's the deal with the 'free to play' thing. What kind of business model is that? How are they going to make their money off it?

(If the info is correct, the forums are readable for everyone since they introduced Zone 3, although you need an account to post there..)

Okay so on the course of your journeys through other games when are you going to peruse through the one I and my wife and Nik, yes Nik, are playing.
Nik is running dungeons with me and my wife.
There is still a possibility that nobody from D2 has played in here with Nik other than my wife and I.
100 free cracked sashes in a Horadric cube to the first one who does.
And I'm not sure how you are running into Art, he is over in my neck of the woods a lot. Well maybe he has two PCs up and running next to each other and has figured out a lefty/righty procedure for running Nilly in D2 and farming Primal Earth in WoW.
Hey great to see you!
OH! OH! OH!

Yeah Nik was there when I killed HC Diablo for the first time and you had EmmaPeel laying down the traps whilest my zealing paladin was wahcking away at him when he was not retreating for a brief moment and quaffing down a purple. Now that was one of the most intense battles in my life.
Many played with Nik watching D2 and once I let Nik take the reins when Rob and I were doing UberTristram in SC, once Meph was down.
I was referring to all the refuges who left Lut Gholien for Azeroth. I'm not sure if any of the refuges had played yet in the new world where Nik and I and the Mrs run around.
Ald might get a chance to be the first from D2 or maybe Kasmir or Whitedog. We shall see.
Hey you must be getting ready to fire up your hog and cruise the highways and byways soon, eh?
Nice chatting with you.
Give 'em hell!

Add in my dis-satisfaction with Blizzard as a company, and the rather steep charge of $15 a month, and I just can't see me playing it. While I'd like to game with you again, it's very doubtful it'll be in WOW.

>Regards- >Mark > >Bongo Fury Grinding? What's that? ;-) Heh, that was also my response in a thread in AGW about maxing Leatherworking ;-) I guess it seriously depends on your choice of classes, though. My Hunter, my one and only 70 so far (I have a Warrior at 68, trying desperately to wrestle playing time away from the Hunter, but unfortunately for her it's just so much more fun to do the daily quests with the Hunter than it is to try to level her that she's losing that particular fight. Add in the excuse that I have that I'll need a lot of gold for her Epic Flying Mount when she *does* hit 70, and doing dailies is the best way to get it, and she doesn't stand much of a chance ATM ;-) ), didn't group with *anyone* other than SvH (and then only occasionally) until well into her 30s. She can still solo most group quests, at least up to the level 70 ones, and she's about to probably try to do what's supposed to be a 5-man level 70 quest series with only a 70 Warlock (which is supposed to be the other easy class to solo, mine's only 25 so far and I haven't found her easy to solo *yet*, but I really don't know what I'm doing with her yet) and one of SvH's 70s, most likely one of his healers. It should be fun :-)
The instances are another matter, but they're only 5-mans up until the end-game stuff, and if you come to Llane (server) and join Justus (guild), you'll recognize more than 5 people. We haven't really progressed beyond the 10-mans, and for the better part need to call in former guildmates and/or associated guilds even to run those. but we've never been a serious raiding guild (those guild members that want to do serious raiding (formerly 40-man, now only 25) join one of the associated guilds, as a rule), but we *do* have fun :-)
There are 10-day free trial accounts that you can use to see if you like the game, but I have to warn you that if you get one of these, you *will* become addicted ;-) I started with the European Open Beta (don't ask :-) ), which only ran about 6 days, and managed not only to get myself hooked but drew Craig in, too :-) I actually used a 10-day free trial of the expansion, after a forced hiatus that started about a month before it came out, but that was only so I could postpone going to the store and buying it and get back to playing the game :-) I had my full version about 2 hours after the trial ran out.
