Logged on to bnet this morning and saw all my chars with expiration dates
on them--ones I was playing yesterday were scheduled to expire in 59 days.
Logged on from my other comp (another copy with a different CD key) and
didn't see this.
Huh?

Check your computer date. I had this the other week - the PC date was set to
some time next year and BNet was telling me all the characters were long
expired (although, bizarrely, I could still open a game with them!). Then I
adjusted the date on my PC to what it should be and "magically" all my
characters were no longer expired. Seems that BNet uses your PC clock to
determine when you last logged on and used a character.

Doh! Thanks. I had travelled into the future and forgot about it.
Actually, I was looking at the calendar on the computer to see what day
of the week September 17th would be and clicked OK; naturally Windows
concluded we were going to skip a month.

That is just sooo Blizzard. Sucks huh? I wonder what would have happened if
you hadn't logged on with them for 60 days?

ROFL!!! I see you found this litle gem. The way that works is that the
game pulls from the database the last access date, and then looks at
the current date.... on YOUR computer. Just for fun, log off bnet, set
you clock ahead 4 months and log back on, and all your chars APPEAR to
have expired. They can still be accessed, as the delete process works
on their side ONLY and doesn't look at your computer's clock.
Only Blizzard !!!!

Shame you can't use that little trick to recover genuinely expired chars.
LOL

Yeah, the character scrub runs solely on their database server. The SQL
for it is more or less
"Delete from Char_Table where days (last_acess - current_date) > 60"

60, eh? Always used to be 90. No wonder my friend's chars that I was keeping
refreshed, expired earlier this year. :(
