Thief report

JAM - 23 May 2006 14:24 GMT
Hey all,

After all the crap that's been going on with thieves lately, i ran into
acc stunt_harley in our mule game about 24 hours ago. What followed was a
weird "conversation", in which i was accused of running d2loader(no biggie
to me, fyi i don't), but the interesting part was when he was  asked how he
knew, apparantly, he checked my ip... how i have no idea, nor do i care, but
that's not a good thing in any case( i'm not worried about it though).

The part that upset me though ,was when he whispered me tonight as i sat in
a channel, and told me that i was a noob for calling him a thief. I
responded with, basically, wtf thinking it was ted(xpx) as his account was
harley_xpx. He then came into my channel, trying to pick a verbal fight, at
which i told him that we really should go to a private channel for this, as
he was likely to get embarrassed if we talked in public. We went to op
leeter (his channel) and that's when it all went to hell.

Basically, i tried to explain to him why he was labelled a thief, and when
he denied it, i told him that maybe he should change his bnet password
because obviously someone had it. Then he said only Ted had his password,
and that Ted hadn't logged onto it at all... apparantly he'd only been in
the game twice, once when he was afk for a hour, and the first night when i
called him on being a thief.
Next he said that that was a threat that i was going to hack his password,
and responded by saying that if he ever logged on, and had a failed login
attempt, he was going to dos me and take my bnet accounts.

That was the part where i started to lose my cool, i started taking
screenshots(i should of from the start) and basically blew my top. I told
him a few home truths, and left to hunt down another reg. 5 smokes and 3
cups of coffee later, i realize that i should of whispered someone and got
some advice while i was still in his channel.

A link to some of the screenshots, alot of the ones i haveare doubles, even
triples, and a lot of it is disjointed, i tend to shake pretty bad when i
get angry :\  If anyone wants to see them all, no worries at all, i'll send
what i have.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/63162540@N00/

So basically, i've had enough. I won't be dumping by the stash/fire as long
as this mob are around, and unfortunantly, i also am not willing to hold the
dropmule game open anymore, as i refuse to help this lot out with muling,
with anything at all. My previous offers of helping regs within this group
stands unchanged.

The only thing I can think of is that we change the names/passwords of the
regular AGD games. :(
How did these types get in, that's what I'd like to know.

Sadly, I won't be around much any more either, my computer's graphics card
has partly died so I can't run most games now. :(

I don't like that option personally. To me, AGD's great strength is it's
openness. There are any munber of 'guilds' or groups (AB) you can join but
nothing like AGD. See my reply to Jay for what I think. :)

Just slap in any old card and run the video test again and change to 2D
mode. I can run the game acceptably on a slow PC in 2D mode easilly, you
hardly notice the difference. <sob> Don't go, please don't go!

It runs fine in windowed mode. But next to none of my other games will run
:( And sadly, I have no other cards, except an ancient Geforce2 MX200.

Diablo2 runs fine on my GeForce 256 SDR (This is the ORIGINAL GeForce)
and P3-733. Yes, there are times where I get single digit frame rates,
but it's rare enough not to be a problem.

But, I don't just play Diablo 2 ;)
Almost everything else that uses Direct3D or OpenGL either crashes, makes
the PC immediately reboot itself, or hangs with an error message. :(

Heh!. Methinks you do now, at least until you get another video card, and
it'll probably have to be a second-hand one unless your mobo supports APG
4x/8x and the powersupply will run a "modern" card.

Then run Diablo in 2D mode and stick with the greatest game ever made.

(I know it'll run in 3D mode but the frame-rate will be abysmal. I have a
machine here with a GF2MX400/32MB and, running in 3D mode it was getting ~10
FPS. In 2D it gets ~50. I know what I'd rather have, even though I only use
the machine for muling).

The computer is fairly new, no problems with getting a brand-new AGP card -
except I'm broke ;)

Nah, that'll always be Quake II ;)

I can't run it in 3D at all since this thing happened - I could before just
fine, but now I'm stuck in windowed mode which is 2D.

You can't run in full-screen 2D then? Just re-run the video test....

Um. OK. It seems to be working again in 3D.
This is just plain screwy. 3 days of Direct3D/OpenGL not working at all, and
then for no reason it fixes itself.

Makes me wonder what's going to go nuts next.

Odd. Has the weather just got cooler? The main thing to go wrong, IME, with
graphics cards is the on-board RAM (Or GPU due to stuck fan) and it's
usually due to heat and/or overclocking. Is your case sufficiently cooled?

My other thought was that MS DirectX could be corrupted. A re-install of the
latest version might help.

As far as I know. Had this box for about 9 months, no problems like this
before. It's really weird.

I already did years ago, it was Windows 98 First Edition that did it ;)

Nine months is about the right time-frame for vents/fans/heatsinks to get
clogged with dust. A little peek-a-boo inside the case, concentrating on the
ventilation areas and the fans wouldn't hurt. Also, fire it up while open,
make sure fans are spinning. :)

Well, quick update, turns out it *didn't* start working again after all, but
for some reason Rome Total War still works as does Quake II.

I get the following from dxdiag:

Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT =
0x887602eb (error code)
Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT =
0x8876086a (3D not available)
Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT =
0x8876086a (3D not available)

Did a Google search for the error codes and got little that helped... and
last time I opened a box up, I killed it, so I'm a little wary of doing so.

Ouch...
Game incompatibilities shouldn't cause these types of symptoms. Sounds
like a bad card, but then you'd think D2 wouldn't run either...

What games are you trying to play that need a better card?

FWIW, I've seen FX5200's going for dirt cheap ($20 after
discounts/rebates).

Well, D2 is one of the ones that crashes in Direct3D mode.
The only thing I can think of apart from an actual hardware problem, is some
weird screw-up with the drivers. It started after a reboot following several
automatic Windows updates (although those were for M$ Office so they
shouldn't have affected anything...)

> What games are you trying to play that need a better card?

Quake 3 and 4, Battle for Middle-Earth, Neverwinter Nights, Age of
Mythology, Serious Sam, Elite Force, Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Rome Total War...
basically, any game that uses 3D acceleration and doesn't have a 2D mode,
which is almost any game produced in the last eight years.

Sadly, those would be worse than my current card (a 6200) and I live in the
UK where everything's more expensive.

Another alternative (a lot cheaper and just as good?) is to buy a PCI
card.  It does the trick and you save about 75% of the AGP price.  Good
hunting...

BTW I have just one friend in US east and he drops his torches to show
me, I give them back becauuse is the frienship and game experience that
counts.  I rather go on without my "great items" than steal them from
someone.  I always go to games where low levels are playing and give
them the good stuff i find that i cant use, usually the +1 or 2 items
or uniques.  Like someone said a few messages back, it is only a game.
I do have a lot of stuff muled, nothing great, but I am available and
willing to part from them at either USEAST "STRONGFOK" or USWEST
"STRONGFOKKER".  I just wish there were more people "out there" like
you guys "in here".  Can we all get along... LOL

It sounds like this guy's just trying to pick a fight. A bnet troll, IOW.
First he accuses you of using a hack, then says he's gotten your IP. I
don't know of any way in hell he can obtain any of this information
without input from you. And if as you say, you weren't using d2loader,
and he said that you were, then that proves he's full of sh.t. I
would never believe another word this person said to me, and just ignore
him for ever more. :-)

Maybe because a lot of us have tense times of it in RL and come to the game
to relax?

Or because this isn't the first run-in Jay has had with this guy.

Then again I could say why are you avoiding the issue that Jay raises and

Because of exactly that, it's a game. I don't want or need to have little
idiots coming onto my screen and telling me that i'm "noob" because i don't
use "l33t" bots and mh. I don't need to hear foul language, if i wanted to
i'd go and see the boys onsite and get my fill. I'm no puritan when it comes
to language, but a little bit of culture doesn't go astray, right? Also, i
don't appreciate being hostiled in agd games, unless it's by Diago when i
want to see how my life stands up to a good whacking :) I don't appreciate
being called a "dole bludger" by someone who hasn't seen a days work in
their life, or being told that, if the idiot types the wrong password into
his account, that my internet connection is going to get dos'd. If i don't
have my internet connection, then it becomes a major PITA for my company to
invoice. I will not have anyone threaten my familys well being.

Yes, my firewall is a multi-tiered system, modem, router, and each
individual computer is protected... firewalls do nothing against dos
attacks, they can be set to overcome them, but why the hell should i have
to? Like you said it's a game, and this tosser has threatened my livelyhood.

Even if you are not, they cannot, as it is never transmitted in any packet
for any reason. Now in D1, that was different.

Don't let him get to you buddy. There are a million kids like him on Bnet,
this is just one of them.\

This guy doesn't even know what "the group" is, he's someone who has heard
about our games from someone...... He doen't belong there, same as anyone
who hasn't been part of AGD, (even as a lurking is good enough, you get a

lurks in here, really nice guy.

This isn't the first time that we've had griefers and it won't be the last.

I'm willing to do what the majority want but my suggestion is to *not*
drop-mule in AGD, get a reg to hold it for you in another game. (Quite a few
have offered, we should be able to find someone most times of the day or
night with a little patience and a good friends list) Cease the practice of
dropping 'giveaway' items by the fire for as long as it takes. Either mule
them and offer them to regs or, use the shared mules if you have access (or
get someone who does to put them there as I did for the first 6 months
before I got access) or, if they're common, sell them. (If a reg is looking
for a fairly 'common' (or uncommon) item, mention it here (with
"Anti-griefers" in the subject would be good as it's a short-term solution
and don't want to turn this into a trading forum) and acct name and, if
someone finds it they may message you. This is for free items, not trading)
If we do this, and all stick to it for long enough, they'll go away. I've
spoken to others who have their own tactics for dealing with these fools and
will use them. However, I suggest we stick to the above rigourously. If
there's nothing for them to take they won't come back. Also, juveniles like
this thrive on conflict, it makes their pants swell. Don't argue with them,
don't talk to them, don't be provoked by them.

They are ephemeral, short attention spans, they *will* go away once there's
no reason for them to stay.

That's my take on it, as always, open to being told to STFU, that I don't
know shite... etc.

Done and done, thanks for the advice.
