Nilly Seems to Have Forgotten His Purpose in Life

Orion Ryder - 18 Feb 2006 15:38 GMT I have the Curse of Louis.
East Us, necro DeadHeadShythed, approaching what has to be his 55th Nilly run.
Nilly has not dropepd a key yet.
In others words, considering how we think in our minds, that these minions have these things up their a.s and they drop them when they die, what the hell is up with this guy?
What the hell is it? He just will not drop a key.
Is it possible he was trying to tell me something last night when he dropped a "long staff"? Is this what he does with his spare time down therre?
Just venting.

Orion Ryder - 21 Feb 2006 14:02 GMT > > I have the Curse of Louis. > > [quoted text clipped - 22 lines] > > Mickey Well it took 55 runs for that one key. Now I am on 20 runs without a key. So that becomes 1 key in 75 runs. You being the poker player and knowing about trends though might say that I should be getting a few over a short period of time and me being the mathematician will say both "no, not in theory" as well as "yes, in theory".
I like the "yes" answer better.
He has been somewhat stubborn with items although on the way there I did get a whire Zak shield with 33% all resist and am considering making it into a Spirit and making a Smiter on the East since my wife is now reluctant to go to UT with a necro after the excursion the other day.
Of course what good is a Smiter in UT without LT? Maybe if someone there can make a Boner Necro who can cast the LT that will make up for the dangers. If I have any intention of getting her to play the zon on the East and I want to go along, I'll have to shelve the necro for Nilly runs and for use in other UT runs when my wife is not present.
Now we just have to get her to come to UT with me, you, Tae and some of the others from the gang of misfits that we have put together.

A Smiter just takes a Wand (or other weapon) with Life Tap Charges with him? Wands with level 5 Life Tap charges are easily shoppable.
If you do, even Dracul's isn't necessary, although it's nice to have it for refreshing the Life Tap...

Patrick.
Orion Ryder - 21 Feb 2006 14:48 GMT Thanks for reminding why I save wands that have Life Tap on them.
Maybe I'll get a chance to use one some day.
But I think I'd feel safer if everyone who goes in with me has a LT wand on weapon switch. I hear that switching weapons while battling the ubers can be risky at times.
I think if my LFplaguazon has a wand on weapon switch that from afar and not closely engaged the switching, casting, and switch back can be performed easily.
Also people have to be aware of the merc's weapons they have and the potential for LT to be overwritten by a merc weapon. Something tells me that things like this get overlooks sometime.
Of course some curses don't affect ubers so knowledge as to what can overwrite is helpful. I don't see Delerium CTC spells overwriting LT but a CTC decrep or AMP can.
A party that goes in with all that carfeully layed out knowledge in their mind can make things easier for everyone there.
Example: my necro casts DV on a pack of ranged attackers. When I notice champions or bosses in the pack I quickly cast decrep and then recast DV. So now I have champs and bosses decreped and the rest DVed.

After that, you rely on the Life Tap on Dracul's Grasp (or Exile, if you're extremely rich) to kick in.
It's risky, but that's what doing UT, solo, is all about, of course.

I usually skip having to mind-read the people I go into UT with, and do it solo. ;)
Anyway, if you have a Smiter with the right gear available to you, I see no need to do it with a 'carefully selected' group of people, except of course, the fun that can be had doing in the Ubers with a group...

Patrick.

I cast it from a distance (level 5 wand) and it lasts long enough to take out Meph. Then cast onto B and D for the win..er..charm.

They are usually sh.t disturbers, running ahead and can bring out the 3 to fight all at once while yelling "Mommmmmmyyyyy!" I died a lot that time..ugly.

So you manage without even Dracul's Grasp? Interesting, although I'm not sure what a worthy replacement could be, which helps a Smiter... What gloves do you use?
Anyway, another indication there's no need to be so 'super careful' with regard to going into UT is. Once you know the 'trick' with the right build (Smiter+some source of Life Tap), it's _usually_ quickly done.
The fun starts when you not only lure Uber-Mephi, but also his two buddies out at the same time. ;-\
>>Also people have to be aware of the merc's weapons they have and the >>potential for LT to be overwritten by a merc weapon. Something tells me [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] >sh.t disturbers, running ahead and can bring out the 3 to fight all at >once while yelling "Mommmmmmyyyyy!" I died a lot that time..ugly. I still try to take one with me. Uber-Meph usually takes him out before he can lure out the other two, and when Uber-Meph is down, it usually isn't a big probleme if the merc somehow gets both Uber-Diablo and Uber-Baal to the same spot: I can take both of 'em at the same time.
Also, my Smiter's merc, equipped with an ethereal Obedience Great Poleaxe, bugged (3kdef) Duress and a plain Tal's Mask (still to be socketed with a cold die facet) is quite capable of taking out the summons of Uber-Diablo/Baal on his own, without dying a lot. Still tuning that guy, but I haven't been in UT for quite a while. (My motivation is also a bit low, since my recent trips there have netted me only Druid Torches, and I'm about ready to simply leave the next Druid Torch I find in the UT game where I found it...)

Patrick.

The 350%ED vs Demon on Laying of Hands has NO effect whatsoever on Smite damage. It will help if you Zeal in UT of course...

What [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > >Patrick. Interesting. I didn't know that. Not sure why it wouldn't since one is still striking with use of the "hands" when smiting. I will have try soul drainers or draculs to see if there's any difference in damage applied/lost/gained by using different gloves/mitts.

You do that. ;) Smite is 'different' to regular Combat skills, of any class, in many respects, and this is one of them. Regardless, if you can live without Dracul's Grasp, Laying of Hands certainly is a valid option _IF_ you use something like Zeal for cleaning up summoned minions in UT...
Anyhow, let us know what your finding are, always nice to get some hands-on experience. ;)

I hear that switching weapons while battling [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > not sure what a worthy replacement could be, which helps a Smiter... > What gloves do you use? Surely it would have to be Laying of Hands for the 20% IAS and not forgetting the +350% damage to demons. Or doesn't that carry over on Smite? If not then maybe Soul Drainers?

The twice that I've run UT solo with my Freezealot and both times I've done it with parties recently my merc has survived just fine. He's a might merc with an upgraded Shaftstop, ethereal Thresher with Obedience and Tal's fugly. The freexzealot's Salvation helps him a lot too I suspect.. Also Chill Bill II hasn't had a death in any of his visits to UT since the re-set. Probably jinxed myself now. :-(

Orion Ryder - 21 Feb 2006 19:18 GMT Marrowalk Boots? Is that what you are talking about?
Wow! If so that is great because my necro has a seet and I can always lend them to a pally if I make one.
Of course I'd rather lend them to my wife's zon but I am not sure if she can keep tabs on casting the required spells at the required time.
Maybe if I tell her "Just get the idea that I am somehow f.cking things up and you have to straighten things out by casting the spell to keep me from f.cking things up even worse". Maybe that will work.
Even if my pally wears them I think casting the spell intermittent with Smite which would be one key press to cast then one key press back to Fanat or Salvation, would be a lot easier than doing a weapon switch, cast on already set hotkey, then weapon switch back, that still being two keypresses. But weapon switched during battle can sometimes be a pain in the a.s and I would prefer to not have to weapon switch given the odd experiences I have had with it at the oddest times.
Thanks Louis.

hmmm! - 22 Feb 2006 03:28 GMT Yes the boots....
The good things are :
-At slvl 12, LifeTap duration is 42 secs and radius is 10 yards. -Slvl 33 Bone Prison could always be helpfull.. -As you mentioned, it is safer to cast life tap as an hotkey'd skill then on weapon switch. For a pally or a javazone, you dont have to rely on your second shield.
The not that good things are:
-Charges on items are a tiny bit expensives to repair.....(euphemism) -Charges cannot be permanently hotkey'd....you have to think about re-assigning keys at every new game.
The boots are not very expensives neither; i got mine for 10 PGems on West Ladder.
