My choice would be a defiance with an Insight.

An Act 2 Defiant merc is a good idea, especially as you'll be maxing
Holy Shield (and thusly already have a good start boosting your DR). You
can never have too much defence IMHO. A Might merc is another idea. It
all depends on your play style, really.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

I'd go with Holy Freeze. A Smiter is a single attack character, so your
biggest problem is crowd control. HF will help slow things down and give you
more time to deal with one target at a time.

As a Smiter you'll probably be maxing Smite, Fanaticism and Holy Shield.
With a few points in the prereq's and utility skills that leaves a lot of
available skill points, particularly at higher levels. Points in Defiance is
then a popular choice, as it's a synergy to Holy Shield. So a Defiance merc
is somewhat redundant.

Well... as you won't actually have defiance running it's still not a bad
idea. You may get Defiance's passive bonus to HS, but not it's main
defence percentage increase while Fanaticism is your aura. For that
reason I still use a Defiance merc for smiters. It's fun as hell being
in the middle of a pack of minions largely unhurt. Not to say HF isn't a
good choice, but I enjoy mixing it up at full speed using smite ;-) I'll
save my dedicated Zealous Holy Freezerdin for slo-mo monster fun *grins*
and is it ever fun!

With a high level Holy Shield (possibly synergized) a Smiter should have a
fairly high defense to begin with. And defense has a serious diminishing
return. So  a Smiter may have a 30% chance to be hit without a Defiance aura
and a 10% chance with. But considering that a Smiter will absolutely have
max blocking, the real difference in hits taken will be 7.5% vs 2.5%. The
actual numbers might be a lot closer, but this example illustrates the
diminishing returns of defense, especially when coupled with blocking.
