How good does a rare need to be before you keep it?  Would a sword
that had good damage for a mid-level character be something you would
keep or would you trash anything that wasn't 300+ed with other good
mods?  Do you pickup every rare you see or only certain item types?

I'm a packrat. I only get rid of stuff when I need the space.

I invariably keep just about any rare that has 250 or more ED on it, or if the
damage to level requirement looks particularly nice, and usually end up using
very few of them, maybe one quarter of all stored rares ever get used.  :-)
Still, best to keep at it, just in case...

I keep a lot of low level rares, especially belts and boots. As to high
level rares, those are almost exclusively circlets and jewelry.

Thats typically my MO, too, but sometimes I hang onto something really
weird like the sorc wand with <150 lightning/fire/cold melee dmg.

I also like to keep plus charges stuff like a couple of LR charged
wands and some DV rings, as long as the slvl is high enough.

Boot mules full of rares - check.
Belt mules full of rares - well, not, check, actually, since it takes a lot
more belts to fill a mule anyway.

I picked up a hum dinger of a rare war scepter the other day - 412% enhanced
damage, 10% IAS, a decent chunk of +attack rating, and 10% faster cast rate as
a bonus.   If someone in my mule team doesn't at LEAST upgrade this to
exceptional, I'm going to box them around the ears.  :-)

I have enough good damage midlevel weapons(and could easily get or runeword
several more) to outfit a small country's worth of midlevels, so as far as
weapons go, I pretty much ONLY keep things with 250+ ED AND several other
good mods(IAS, leech, etc). Non-weapon items have to have +skills and
resists(for ammies and circlets), high leech, resists, and stats(rings),
resists/30 FRW/stats or FHR(boots), and resists/FHR/high life or
stats(belts). I don't bother with rare armors or non-circlet helms.

>  Do you pickup every rare you see or only certain item types?

I generally pick up all weapons, jewelry, circlets, belts, and boots.

My current ladder pally is wearing a rare circlet with +1 pally skills, 8%
LL, +34 life, +18 res all and another mod or two I don't recall. It's better
(IMO) than the +2 pally skills rare circlet (with not much else of use) I
also found. His merc is wearing a rare eth Dusk Shroud with 1348 defence,
FHR and three resists.

I don't believe it, I haven't played today. Been put off by the fact that my
necro and all my hell-capable mules are loaded with stuff that needs sorting
and it'll be a marathon effort to do as I've been dumped from too many games
to just drop anything now. If it's worth keeping it's worth passing through
the trade window, it's just time-consuming and requires a lot more going in
and out of games, risking RD.

I hear ya!   I have an ever increasing line of "cruft to be sorted" temporary
mules on the ladder now.

Which is why I don't keep most yellow sh.t, and very little green sh.t
unless it is part of a high end set. The sole execption to this is the
Angelic set and an extra ring, as this is standard equipment for ALL my
chars from lvl 6 until they make level 20.

I may have to start picking up nothing but elites, high runes, gems, and the
various exceptional items that I still have a hankering for.  It's gotten to
the point where it takes longer to mule items than it does to find them in the
first place.  :-)   But I just can't seem to resist saving all those
guillaemes faces and whitstans shields that come along.

pssst Mcikey I don't know what sort of 1337 haxxorz skillz you are
using but I think you mean level 12 for the Angelics. :)

I keep a lot of rare jewellery and as others have said... boots, belts,
belts gloves, circlets (coronets etc), claws (in search of the +2 assn,
+3 LS rare) and never actually find good weapons to keep.

Level 6 is where I start the tweaking. Bloodfist gloves and Hotspurs along
with Biggin's. The Angelic set goes on when it can, and Nightsmoke completes
it at level 20. I have actually played a sorc through NM act4 in this setup.

Bloodfists are level 9 actually, heh.

Yes, and Biggin's is 3 and Hotspurs are 5. I just meant that level 6 starts
the twinking. The first items that go on are those 3, when they are ripe.

If you also get the Nokosan Relic, you can get your max fire resist up to 95

I suspect that the answer to this will have at least two big variables.

!.  Hardcore players will likely tend to keep more mid to low level items
than softcore players
2.  Those who play more frequently will tend to only keep higher level
equipment, as they already have a generous supply of the low and mid level
equipment.

I play hardcore, and I'd guess I average around ten to fifteen hours a week
of play.  I'm a packrat, so I keep a LOT of useless items, but even I am
starting to get a decent supply of low to mid level items, so I find myself
keeping less and less newly found rare items.
