Yet another HC necro bites the dust.

Yes, it's true. Monstermash died. Level 78, in the maggot lair, level 3
hell.

Not my usual lag-spike type death but something else I've been noticing
recently (although not with fatal consequences until now).

(My ISP buys its bandwidth through our monopolistic, money-gouging NZ
Telecom who have decided to deliberately introduce latency and jitter
(lag-spikes) into it's wholesale product to combat the spread of VoIP. It's
criminal IMO but what can you do? I've been emailing the govt and the
Commerce Commision to no avail.)

Anyway, recently I've noticed that when I change my right-click skill it
doesn't always register (and I don't always get time to look at the little
square to check). Like, I'll be using what should be Amp. Dam. and I'll be
popping Clay Golems everywhere instead. So far this has been merely
inconvienient. Not anymore.

I have a Spellsteel unique axe on switch for teleport charges. It's great
with a summoning necro, to be able to teleport with all your minions.

I had found Coldworm Burrower's chamber and, of course, ther was just one
skelly in the front *very* slowly killing a beetle minion. At that rate I
think my skellies would have died one-by-one before we got in there. So I
hit <w> for weapon switch and right-clicked just in front of the skelly
doing the hitting. The necro and all minions ended up just inside the
chamber and started to fan out killing so I right-clicked and teleported
back up the tunnel a bit, hit <w> and then right-clicked smack-bang in the
middle of the chamber. It should have been amp damage. *Should* have been.
Instead I teleported right on top of Coldworm Burrower, in the middle of a
boss-pack of scarabs and a boss-pack of maggot-things. The <w> press hadn't
registered.

My lightning resist was around 50, fine for carefullly killing. *Not* fine
for being in the middle of a bunch of scarabs all being hit at the same time
and spitting out masses of lightning sparks. I started trying to move and
hitting purples but with a reaction time of 0.1 of a second and ping-times
of 400ms (0.4 of a second) and higher it was never going to work. I got the
"deeds" screen.  :-(

I had a purpose-built enchant slave in the game and had the task of trying
to loot a body in a room full of angry powerful critters with a sorc with
pretty much just maxed 'chant and a merc about 20 levels lower than her. No
easy task, no easy task at all. Her resists were miserable and defence even
worse, she wasn't designed for combat.

She did however have an inventory full of dexterity charms and a Kuko and
Monstermash's portal was close. So I chant her and her merc, switch to the
Kuko and go down the portal. Start walking towards the chamber (now teeming
with young magoots as they'd been triggered to lay eggs) and she gets
ambushed by scarabs from a side-passage! Man! Fat purps and running
backwards (so to speak), a dead merc and back through the portal!

Whew!

So I ressurected the merc (I must level him for next time, if there ever is
one) and went backdown, this time expecting the scarabs. I fed the merc pots
and stood on the spot, held <shift> and fired exploding arrows down the
passageway. Ok, killed all the scarabs in the passage, now for the chamber.
To cut a long story short, I adopted a similar strategy for the chanber.
Stood outside and holding shift, fired a couple hundred arrows into the
chamber. I killed pretty much everything that moved. Unfortunately the boss,
Coldworm, doesn't move. I had to sneak into a position where i could hit him
without him hurting me too much. Then I was able to read his mods. Immune to
fire, lightning enhanced. Everytime I hit him with an arrow a huge shower of
lightning filled the chamber. I managed to find a spot still in the mouth of
the chamber but where I could shoot him. One or two lightning sparks still
got me but I could drink enough pots to keep alive. Now I know why Monster
died so damn quick!

Long story short, I looted him. (Yay!!! Got the Marrowwalks back!!) That's a
good thing. I lost a bunch of stuff in his inventory/stash though. He had
two sets of gear, his 'battle gear' for progressing through hell and his MF
gear for NM Baal runs. I lost his MF gear. Next time I'll let the chanter
hold it instead of all the other stuff that he finds, some of which wasn't
that great anyway.

<Phew! Long story huh?>

Anyway, his replacement, Live-forever, is now level 39 and has his might
merc. I'll do some normal Baal minion-runs with him to level him a bit and
hopefully find some resist charms. I wish you could loot your merc too.

This is HC necro number 5. They died at levels: 75, 80, 67 and 78. That's
about one every week or so since I started HC. <g> Hopefully this one will
live up to his name.

Cheers,

Right ok my bad. Just that i didn't know that enchant made it that much
easier to level. Maybe misfit already had that skellimancer prepared up
to a certain level because starting a character from scratch and
leveling him to 38 in HC seems quite a challenge.

No, with an enchantress (and maybe a BO Barb) and a players 4 game you can
do it in one sitting easy.

> How in the name of the big baby jesus can you manage to level your

Yep, have a purpose-built enchantress with all the WPs. I also have access
to four PCs and sets of CD keys so I start a game, bring in the enchantress
and two other chars and away I go. Just do the essential quests (and the
extra skill-point quests) and I'm usually level 24 or so for ancients. Then
just do Baal runs after I get the lvl from ancients to make me 25. I get two
lvls per Baal run and it only takes 5 minutes a run.

0 to 40 in about four hours.

40 to 60 in about six hours.

That's with a skellimancer, it would take longer with a character without
all the minions killing I guess.

Nice One. So really a HC death to you is just a minor hold back to get
you to your final destination i.e. Immortality. Let the master plan
commence!

> Nice One. So really a HC death to you is just a minor hold back to get

That's pretty much the way it goes. With my ISP/connection I can't let a
death bother me too much, I just rush another character through. The biggest
problem is the loss of charms. I can rush a character to level 60 in a
couple days but that's not covering much ground so I usually have very few
resist charms. The last guy had four I think, one large and three small.

Hopefully this guy lives longer and gets more, then I get more choice of my
gear, I don't have to wear all resist stuff.

There is a world of difference between being perfect (or using perfect
grammar) and using *mangled* chat-speak.

Don't be silly you condescending person, they won't have any affect on
Kaytie at all. What they may do is curb your urge to shout at people who
don't conform to your standards in a public forum. Most usenet grammar
police have psychological disorders, the grammar police thing is a symptom.
It's most commonly Obsessive-Complusive Disorder, Small Dickitis or a
combination of the two. Therefore it's a fair bet you're on meds.

(This is fun, see if you can change one letter and insult me back!!)

> There is a world of difference between being perfect (or using perfect

How true. That leaves you several options:

1) Attempt to impose your will on another person by yelling at them in all
capitals. As you aren't in a position to physically intimidate her then you
will have to make do with this form of assaulting her.

(This is the option most often chosen by people with small penises, it makes
them feel powerful, way beyond what their little pecker ever could. It is
especially disturbing when the person you are attempting to bludgeon with
your *BIG* *WORDS* is a 13 year old young lady. However people who choose
this option rarely try it on someone who may have even the remotest chance
of besting them in a contest of pugnacity. This is referred to as the soft
option, rather fitting in your case).

2) Take it as a challenge, dechiper what Kaytie is saying, see if you can
get it right. This is a very positive approach and encourages you to think,
it also improves cognitive function. I'm sure your therapist discussed this
with you but it's *so* hard to remember these things when you're strapped
into a straightjacket and pumped full of Haldol.

3) Accept that the world is changing and evolve with it.

4) Take your chill-pills and slip into that happy place where nothing
bothers you, not even your inadequate genitalia before reading
alt.games.diablo.

5) Stop reading the posts that offend you enough to cause you to shout in a
public place and show your lack of control (and bitterness at your physical
deformity). If you don't trust your OCD to allow you to reliably do this
then most newsreaders, including Agent, have a 'killfile' option, you won't
even see Kaytie's posts. Then there will be zero chance of you reaffirming
to the group that you are a mentally disturbed bully.

(I left the most obvious one [Ask respectfully if the poster could conform
with your conception of how things should be done] off the list as, being
the most obvious one, you not using it confirms that you have some sort of
psychologocal disorder.

I humbly suggest that option 5 is probably your best bet. You seem to have
very little self-control and, sooner or later, you're likely to forget to
take your meds and embarrass yourself again.

Get well soon.

During my studies. Or did you want an exact date? People with OCD like to
have things pinned down to exact dates usually. They also ask a lot of
questions.

Then you probably have an undiagnosed condition that only rears it's ugly

Mentioning your small genitalia in one post isn't considered a fixation. At
least it wasn't when I studied psychology.

Exactly. Commonly refered to as 'shouting' at someone on usenet. You should
know that, being a usenet policeman.

Those aren't big.

Studying for a degree in psychology. You get to see all sorts of
stuff....... Also having an interest in psychophamocology and an
understanding of how drugs work. Haldol induces amnesia for the duration of
it's effect. And no, I haven't had it.

trying to intimidate people into doing things how *I'd* like them to be

They're called 'capital letters' by most people.  psychophamocology or
psychopharmocology would be 'big words'.

I hesitate to even get into the middle of this, but...

On Usenet, typing in all capital letters is the equivalent of shouting at
someone.

Hey, Mr Grammar policeman! It isn't possible for me to bring up the same
subject repeatedly in the same post. I can bring it up once and then comment
on it later in the post but to "bring it up repeatedly"? How is this
possible when it's already been brought up? You're slipping.

Ohh, there goes that OCD/grammar police thing again. I missed a letter in
there did I? Spelling flames are, and always have been, the lamest thing on
usenet. And, as Marcel so rightly pointed out, capital letters is considered
to be shouting on usenet.

No, I didn't address anyone in all capitals (Shout at them) or insult their
use of the English language unprovoked. Niether did I try to intimidate
someone and try to force then to do things my way.

laziness on their part.

You're correct, bitte is German.  I hang out on a German forum, and pass
a note to people who start a conversation in German... that if they can
would they please try in English (Their English is almost always *much*
better than my German).  So asking you to try in English, and asking you
politely half in German, is a (slightly sarcastic) note that what you
wrote is not clear English.  I'm fairly certain that you're much better
at English than I am at mangled chatspeak.

I second that emotion (except that the administrators are a bigger
waste than the teachers, IMO).

The thing is, Kaytie is obviously much brighter than her mangled
English would lead one to believe, almost to the point where I think
she must be doing it deliberately -- perhaps it's just teenage
rebellion against the strictures of clear, accurate expression, and
she'll grow out of it.

Or she is so excited to tell her story and wants to get it all out before
she misses something that she goes for the gusto (and run on sentences) LOL
Iirc we were all young once and I agree with Roy we outgrew it. (much to my
chagrine, why is it energy is wasted on the young?) On a side note not
everyone is perfect and we make mistakes. Unless someone specifically has
asked for us to point out their errors (this not being a classroom nor are
we being graded on our responses) then one should politely grit their teeth
and mind their business. Yes us oldsters often jump other's shyt for
misspellings etc but if you notice it is often done in a jocular manner and
often because it has struck our funny bone in some context (generally sexual
i.e. castrate). So I suggest that if Kaytie's particular posts are that
offensive to you then you best killfile them. She is a breath of fresh air
in a game that is getting stale.

Yeah, been there, done that. 'I' thought I was casting Orb on Lister and his
boys, but B-net thought I still had teleport hotkeyed. Unfortunately B-net
always wins those disagreements. Terrible way to lose a character. You
instantly get that sick feeling in your stomach and then see that 'Deeds'

Never keep anything of value on the play character, let the looter hold it.
I've been doing a lot of MFing Hell Mephy lately, and my slave holds
everything I find except gems and runes (nothing high).

Check the HC mules. I've filled all the existing characters and two new ones
with stuff I've found over the past few days. No good necro stuff, but maybe
something you can use.

Ach! I've been lucky then cause the worst that the weapon switch delay
has given me is opening Town Portals as opposed to teleporting into a
pack of beasts.

> Good attitude, get right back up on the horse that throws you.

This reminds me of my first fight when I was 5 years old. I was getting
my a.s handed to me and kept heading home crying, walking up the
driveway towards the front door.

My dad would not let me in the door. He kept sending me back to where
the other kid was.

But when I walked back towards the house with tears in my eyes, my dad
refused to let me into the house.

So finally I got the upper hand on this kid and grabbed him by the chin
while he was down and I was i nthe back of him and I pulled on his chin
as hard as I could, like my life depended on it.

Boy did that kid let a scream and start bawling. He tucked his tail
between his legs and wlaked home in tears.

I walked back to my house and there was my father waving me in.

The sad thing about Misfit's tale is that it seems like his ISP is the
"other kid" here. I admire Misfit's tenacity and his willingness to get
back on the saddle and show that his balls are big enough and stong
enough for him to keep returning to the HC realm.

Three cheers for Misfit.

Thanks dude, I appreciate that. I haven't had the balls to tell Bongo, Spook
and Cinna that I lost the BO slave they built for me though. I was giving a
WP to my necro, went there with the barb, (Ancients way, NM) looked around
and all was clear went to the other PC to walk through with the necro and
heard fighting noises. Ran back to first PC and just about gutted nyself on
the back of the chair trying to hit purples and back off. Too late. His merc
had wandered and drew attention. I learned a lesson from that but haven't
been able to get the new BO guy up by myself.

Those freakin mercs! God damn it!

Tell me about it.

Bongo and I are in the Crystalline passage killing off packs and here
we are licking our wounds and getting ourselves ready to move on and
there's our mercs moving around and trying to make friends with the
next and closest pack. And of course the valk wanders off with them
because she knows that they are wimps (at least in her eyes) and that
they are gonna need her help.

Ever walk through one of the ice passages and meet up with a pack and
there's the merc standing back behind some wall like he's waiting in
ambush in expectation of you leading the pack back his way?

Oh I guess you don't see that much with a necro.

Well that sucks about the WC barb.

Well now they know.

Yep.

Yeah, I still get that sometimes. Damn annoying too.

Yep. I've been a bit shy of mentioning it, they did me a big favour with him
(and the chanter) and I feel like a bloody idiot for losing him. I've got
his replacement up to about lvl 24 but got a bit stalled.

He might not be able to. From past posts, I get the idea that there is
some kind of monopoly there in New Zealand. I might be wrong.

If there is a monopoly Park Place and Boardwalk aren't gonna do him any
good. He'll have to land on that spot where he can buy the electric
utility or whatever it is.  :)

Doh!

Yes, you are right. NZ Telecom owns all the copper in the country and
ultimately control what sort of service I get. They bought the telephone
system off the government years back at a bargain-basement price. The govt.
put a few clauses in the agreement that were supposed to limit the powers of
Telecom and foster competition. However, NZ Telecom has become the
best-performing listed company on the NZ stock-market and can afford
*excellent* lawyers. (They make approximately 1.5 million dollars a day
profit, this in a country boasting not much more than 3 million people
including children). The upshot of it all is that there are other ISPs but
they have to go through NZ Telecom. Telecom keep pulling sneakies to keep
their product slightly better than the (usually cheaper) opposition and even
their own product is over-priced and well below par as far as lag and jitter
go by world standards. There is speculation that they do this deliberately
so that, when the govt. slaps them on the wrist (as it does now and then)
they can provide a slightly better service and say "Look how much we've
improved it!!"

The whole scenario stinks and, unless the govt. compells them to do
something about it we're stuck with it. (There was a bit of a scandal last
Christmas, Telecom gave all govt. ministers it has dealings with Ipods for
Xmas. An aide blew the whistle and they all gave them back, feigning
disgust. If it hadn't come to light they would have kept them. And this is
only the tip of the iceberg. Something is rottem in the state of NZ and it's
name is NZ Telecom.

To make things worse, most of our international traffic goes through a
recently laid fibre-optic cable that does a big loop around the Pacific,
joining the west coast of the US with Hawaii on the northern leg, then to
Syndey and on to Auckland. The southern leg goes to Fiji and then back to
the US west coast. Telecom has used a large proportion of it's ill-gotten
gains nad invested heavilly in this project, "The Southerncross Cable",
right from the word go. So even if the govt does force them to free up
things within NZ they still own a big slice of the gateway.

I hate them. Hate is not a word I use often.

That is too bad.  Still, I would write your government representative.
Every little bit helps and if you use snail mail the message will often get
through.  If you can get others to write, all the better.

Another thing that may help would be to write a letter to a local
electronics or media magazine and hope they publish it.  Unfortunately is it
hard to get much support from non gamers on lag issues but keep trying.

I've emailed the Commerce Commision, maybe a paper letter would be better, I
heard nothing back after my carefully worded email. The NZ PC World, our
biggest local PC magazine, has an article about it in the current issue.
Even the coutry's biggest newspaper, the NZ Herald

The current column isn't available on-line AFAICT (they only allow access to
older articles free) but is a lot more scathing than this one from last year
entitled "No Backbone":

http://www.pcworld.co.nz/pcworld/pcw.nsf/ArchiveAuthor/3F1F2124F653ACB4CC256
F56007A25D7?OpenDocument

The latest article is entitled "Telecom vs Telecom" and mentions a column by
US columnist Robert Cringely dated March 17th about NZ Telecom. (This isn't
the first time he's written about a telecommunications company half-a-world
away. That's how bad NZ Telecom is).

Here is an excerpt from that column, mainly about Voice over IP but having
implications for all latency-sensitive connections:

"And there are other dirty tricks available to broadband ISPs. Telecom New
Zealand, for example, is reportedly planning to alter TCP packet
interleaving to
discourage VoIP. By bunching all voice packets in the first half of each
second,
half a second of dead air would be added to every conversation, changing
latency
in a way that would drive grandmothers everywhere back to their old phone
companies. This is because phone conversations happen effectively in real
time
and so are very sensitive to problems of latency. Where one-way video and
audio
can use buffering to overcome almost any interleaving issue, it is a
deal-breaker for voice."

And you can forget the "planning to" bit, they've been doing it for a while.
You can imagine what this does to D2 pingtimes. It virtually guarantees that
they'll be 500+ms.

I love this country but the internet connection is driving me crazy.
