>>> Merry Christmas >> >> Same to you my friend. > > :) Ya know, before BB was born, in 1974, here in NZ you could get a pack of 20 cigarettes and a box of matches *and* change out of 50 cents. Even if you bought the expensive smokes like I did. (Rothmans were 44c a pack and Pall Mall were 42c, I was always a Rothmans man). I started buying ciggies to pay my gambling debts, didn't smoke 'em myself at the time, I was 13. I'd started playing pool with my older brother's friends and they played for a smoke a game, a plan I think they originally concocted to stop me from playing <g>. By the time I'd lost about a pack or two I developed a knack for the game and started winning more than I lost. This left me with a problem. A regular supply of cigarettes and no use for them. I bet you'll never guess the ingenious solution I came up with to remedy the situation. I started smoking them! Clever ay?
F/FW to March of this year, Rothmans around $10 a pack and a habit I couldn't sustain on an invalid's benefit and keep the bills paid. Shady also smoked. We were in the crazy situation where, after all the fixed bills were paid, we spent $60 a week on tobacco and had $50 left for food/toiletries/cleaning products etc.
We both stopped smoking On April 1st 2004, the least foolish thing we could have done. *Very* difficult thing after 30 years of smoking but one of the greatest achievements of my life, Shady's too. (Although she'd been smoking for a lot shorter time than I had she has a more active social life so cigarettes were more in her face during the most difficult part of the giving up process).
You'd think that having double the money left to spend would be a huge thing (and, in some ways, I guess it was. We don't have to eat instant noodles 5-6 times a week anymore) but somehow we still don't have spare money. Isn't it one of Murphy's Laws that you will always spend at least 105% of your income?
2004 has been a good year for me. I hope it was good for y'all. And 2005 is even better. -- ~misfit~
