Hello, gerbils.  I could ask in a group about Warcraft but I don't see
the point in that.  Anyone here playing?  Is is it all that and a bag
of chips?  I was considering buying it after Christmas but I have
never played a MMORPG, so I dunno...

I recently installed Starcraft and it has ate up most of my time.  I
have had it four five years but I never had played it until now.  Go
figure.  I have not had the desire to go back to D2 as of yet.

I'd wait a few weeks until the stores get some back on hand - at least
that's the vibe I've got on how good its selling. Keep an eye out for SvH
and Chainbreaker and a few others reports to see if the patch downloads have
improved. There is an impressions thread started a few days ago you can look
into for now.

Like D1, StarCraft was a work of genius.  It was far better than
anything in its category (RTS) when it was released, and most
tellingly, unlike D1, still has not been surpassed seven years later.
When you have done all the campaigns, the custom maps are a good
challenge.  MP on Bnet is an order of magnitude more challenging
again.  Unfortunately, there are cheaters on Bnet, but you can also up
the challenge level by playing the campaigns and custom maps in MP
mode (i.e., no save/loading).

When I got SC years ago, I played it for about half an hour and said 'this
is just Warcraft with space guys'. So I set it aside and didn't touch it
again till recently. It's got a few more bells and whistles than WC, but
it's hardly a work of genius. WC was the first RTS from Blizzard, so it's
the real groundbreaker.

I picked it up again recently and played through all the SC campaigns and
most of the way through the first Broodwar campaign before I got bored with
it. It's a good game, but nothing special. I've played some other RTS's too:
Age of Empire series, Command and Conquer series, and Homeworld mostly. They
each have their nice points, but none are head and shoulders above the rest.
I still like WC the best.

You were wrong.  The balance, depth, variety and artistry of SC are an
order of magnitude above WC.

No, actually it is a work of genius.  It virtually defined PC gaming
for a huge number of people, and is still enormously popular.  In
Korea, it was so popular that TV channels were devoted to it, and
people would go on dates to dedicated StarCraft cafes.  SC is to RTS
what Half-Life is to FPS.

It was groundbreaking, just not very good.

You haven't nearly touched the depths of the game.  When you can
complete the BW campaigns, you'll have some minimal skills.

>It's a good game, but nothing special.

Its impact on the PC gaming community and culture proves it _is_
something special.

A little better, and a bit of a different concept, but still lacking
the depth, humor, balance and sheer artistry of SC.

IMO WC is also junk compared to SC.

thus is why they are opinions and why flame wars often tend to be pointless.
AoE and SC/bw are both good imo but the koreans do love SC

Sure, the old saying, "Opinions are like a.sholes, everyone's got one and
often other people find them disagreeable". Or did I just make that up?

FWIW, here's my metaphoric a.shole:  I have both SC (with BWs) and the
AOE/AOK/AOM series and, of the lot, the only one I go back and play is AOE
expansion (Gold) on our LAN with Shady. Occasionally AOM on LAN as well but
not often. Our favourite LAN games are AOE and WC III, both played
cooperatively. (We both learnt a long time ago not to play *against* each
other, not great for a relationship where both take their gaming seriously
and can be competitive).

I don't play any of them on-line.

So if replayability is any indicator, I think AOE is better than SC.

What I remember, and I have no idea where I would have heard it first,
is "Opinions are like a.sholes.  Everyone's got one and most of them
stink"

my point however poorly put was that. bicker all you want but we just won't

Which just goes back to marketing, brand name, etc, not game quality.
You can't get out of it.  There is no escape.  Bickering is what makes

true.

One could also make a very unhealthy snack and smack a label "atkins
approved" on it and watch sales take off. The kind of products GNC sells
here in the US - non FDA tested mostly and statements which don't have to be
true.

I've tried all of them, AoE and AoK are both very good but SC/BW is
timeless.

I believe you should - but they are having some bandwidth problems right
now, and it's not going to get better when 50000 people get a box set of WoW
under the tree tommorrow.    Don't wait too long, but at least a week or two

Argh! Didn't think of that, and I was planning an intensive leveling
campaign over my New Year break. Things probably wont improve until the
first free month is up then.  :)

It appears you have some time to decide. While Christmas shopping I was
looking for it, out of curiosity. Sold out in every store. Most clerks I
asked just laughed. Apparently Blizzard had released it in limited numbers
so as not to tax their servers too much. Most stores expect to not get any
more copies till the second week in January.

This is my first foray into the MMORPG world and I've found it very
enjoyable and emersive so far. As Flamethrower said, there are some earlier
posts on WoW and peoples thoughts just after purchase. svh posted a nice
write-up a day or two ago.

Some negatives: (well nothings perfect)
- Patch Downloads. Every week on Tuesday Night US time, there is a complete
server reset and I think we can expect frequent patches, this is a good
thing. Problem is that their patching system is erm.. dodgey to say the
least. Lots of complaints about not being able to connect and the patch only
coming down at 4kb on some systems.
- Reading the forums suggests that there are some w.nkers using bots
already... this normally wouldn't bother me but when Blizzard start nerfing
things like fishing because of botters it really pisses me off. Now I hear
there are gold hunting bots... sheesh.
- I've noticed similar lag issues to D2. Example: I fire an icebolt at a
Wizard. His life bar doesn't move and he doesn't turn to face me. My life
bar goes down, I fire again and see no casting or spell graphic. He's still
not facing me and his life bar is full. I finally realize what's happening
turn to run... dead.  :)

cheers,
Stu.

Great game. Never played this online but loved the single player side.

Troll? I read it as meaning that he doesn't play WoW but plays 'Thief'
instead, and loves it. How does this qualify as a troll any more than
any other post in this thread?

If someone were asking if they should buy a car and I told them to buy a
unicycle - that would be a troll too.

So I guess you're a troll now too since the topic was if someone should buy
WoW.  Silly boy.

It was a related comment to the question.  Not a direct answer, but certainly
related.  Even if it was not related, it's not like it was an attempt to
'troll' for responses.   Your post was the first troll in the thread.

I'm a bit confused, how is this a troll post?

The main question was "so should i buy WoW".
I answered the question with NO, buy Thief instead.

If I had just said No, would that still be a trolling post.
