What equipment to collect for Frenzy Barb?

Hello All

I have got to level 50 with my new Barbarian on the European Ladder.
I have maxed sword mastery and I am almost there with Frenzy.

The equipment I am using is:-

IK Helm with 2 perfect topaz inserted

Gunthers Rift Dimensional Blade Sword
Culwens Point War Sword

Hawkmail Scale Mail
Wilhelms Pride Belt
Tearhaunch Boots
Nokozan Amulet
Nagelring

St - 100  Dx - 85   Vit - 60  Energy - 10  Unused - 85

A bit of a mishmash of items I know but what do I prioritise collecting?
The swords need improvement but what do I go for? Azurewrath?
Any advice would be useful. I have an oculus to trade so I should be able to
get something decent.

Thanks

I think I'd set my sights a little lower than an Azurewrath, for the time
being. :-)

How about a Lightsabre instead, for the time being?  Todesfaelle Flamme is a
decent unique, too, and one you can use right now.  And several of my
midlevel Frenzy barbs got good use from Aldur's Rhythm, even though they
were primarily sword barbs (it's always been my philosophy that an early
point or two in mace mastery isn't wasted for any barb).

Heh, my magic finder uses a sword/mace combo right
now--Azurewrath/Stormlash, and earlier he used Lightsabre/Baranar's Star.

You need to look to your armor.  I'm guessing you're wearing it for "cannot
be frozen", but you need better at level 50 even if you have to give that
up.  Duriel's Shell would be great if you could get it, but it's in pretty
high demand--I wouldn't hesitate to trade an Oculus for one, but that's just
me and I don't trade much.  :-)

Other than that, a "Smoke" runeword armor works pretty good too (my HC
background shows on that one).  :-)

Hello Chainbreaker

I have Atma's Wail armour on one of my mules - it sounds like I should get
and use this now.
I have also got a Baranars and Aldurs Rhythm so a few points in Mace may be
worth it.
I also have a Demonhorn Edge helm which I can't wait to use - patience!

Thanks for the advice. As good as ever.

Mike

I will see what

Atma's Wail will certainly be a big improvement over Hawkmail, even at the
expense of losing "no freeze".  If you can find some gear that reduces
freeze time by x%,  that will help make up for it--and that stacks, too.

Don't go overboard putting points into mace mastery--just one or two will be
plenty.  The reason I usually put a couple of points there, even for sword
barbs, is because the early/mid-level mace-class weapons IMO are so much
better than the swords.  Besides, starting out cold your barb has all those
pally sticks he can buy, which are much better melee weapons than anything
Charsi or Gheed sells.

To me, it's silly not to use the best available weapon, whatever it may
be--unless you have some specialty build going, of course.  :-)

Having seen Mickey's Frenzy Barb simply tear through hell mode without
sneezing, I'd say the weapon of choice would be 2 Gimmershreds.

They'll work, too, but one of the nicest things about D2 is that there are
so *many* ways to get from "A" to "B".  :-)

Only problem is that early on decent one-handed axes don't seem to be all
that easily come by.  But as I said earlier, there's no real reason to make
a solid commitment to a weapon mastery very early on, anyway, unless you
already have your endgame weapons available.  Even if you do, you still have
to get *to* the endgame.  :-)

Other than Gimmers, for axes the Butcher's Pupils are teh besto, for
midgame, and then once they start slowing down, just upgrade em :)

Lacerators would be nice for the amplify damage, but I haven't found any of
those yet.

Doom and Beast or eBotD and Beast are amazingly powerful, but also worth a
small fortune.

And that's why you'll never see me steering anyone towards such.

Hello All

Thanks for all the advice - lots to think about.

I have just traded my Oculus for an Azurewrath. Just wish to trade M'avinas
Kraken Shell for IK armour and I will be will on the way to making my Barb
half decent.

Azurewrath for an Oculus?!?

Well, enjoy--it's a fun sword.  My magic finder loves his--what little I
play him any more.

Hello Chainbreaker

I have reread your reply and was wondering if I have actually made a good
trade?

I found a Rockstopper Helm this evening and was hoping to trade for part of
IK set either boots or belt.

I use M'avinas Kraken Shell armour and was hoping to swap for IK armour.

Am I being unrealistic with these trades.

Mike

Thanks

Mike

Gosh no--sorry I wasn't clearer.  No, IMO getting Azurewrath for Oculus is a
*great* trade.  Just for comparison, early on in the second ladder season, I
traded Tal's armor for one, but it was in HC where the higher end items tend
to cost quite a bit.  :-)

If you can get IK for M'avina armor, then that'll be another great trade.
You might even be able to get both IK boots and belt for a Rockstopper,
since they're fairly common.

Yeah, no sh.t.  If that's the going rate for an Azurewrath, then I really
need to some more MF.  You can get an Occy pretty cheap, I thought.

Well, that was what I meant--I really can't imagine getting an Azurewrath
for an Occy, even in SC, unless everyone's finally bailing out of the game
for good.

Nope, I can't really imagine that trade, even if everyone *is* bailing out.
:-)

Mike, just consider yourself damned lucky for finding somebody willing to
make that trade, and enjoy the sword.  :-)

And if you can make that Mavina/IK armor trade fairly quickly, then you need
to make a career in merchandising.  :-)
