ISP vs HC

Well, my ISP decided to work on their local network. They didn't
bother letting me know before, I found out the hard way after I lost
both of my clvl 30 HC ladder characters within an hour. At that point
(slightly enraged, I admit :P), I called and, er, bitched. They told
me they'll be done by Monday, though won't work on the weekend ("It
should work, but we aren't sure"). Welp, that means I'll be playing SC
for a few days. David, when do you normally play? :)

(I sound calmer than I am. I don't mind losing characters so much, but
I do mind that this was unnecessary because they should have let their
customers know -- it didn't matter for viewing web pages if the net
goes out for a few seconds, but if you are up your ears in the middle
of enslaved and death maulers, then standing there half a minute and
dropping is slightly uncool.)

Ouch.  Let me know when you're ready to take on HC again, and if we can
arrange a time, start ladder HC characters at the same time, since I haven't
been back on my east account yet.

If you need to email, then chainbreaker (naturally) at comcast dot
net--that's "net" not "com"--should do it.

Will do. :) Probably Monday or Tuesday. Kind of careful now and will
wait until after business hours on Monday to see how stable things
are. I'm glad I muled the two SOL runes I had found off the characters
-- kinda pissy about losing the nekozan amulet and the sander boots,
but... ah, well, that's HC! :)

I usually play in late EST evenings, by the way -- 10+pm or so.

I can manage an hour or so at that time--even more on the weekend, but I'll
look for you Monday/Tuesday PM unless I hear differently.

In a weird interesting twist, I accidentally started my first character on
USWest SC.  Now I'm not sure if I should keep on playing on West until I
switch to hardcore (and then go back to East) or if I should switch now.

I'm willing to switch now :)

I'll probably be playing around noon-2pm EST, which is evening Europe so
would that be good?

Speaking from an ISP's point of view, it causes more headaches for them if
they let everyone know than if they don't.

If they send out an email to all the users affected, then that generates far
more calls in to the ISP than if no one knows about it.  Then the only
people that call in are the ones that get kicked off, or can't connect.

They send an email, and just about everyone calls, sometimes days/weeks
later, to inquire what the email was about, even though they didn't notice
any interruption in service.

Most ISP's would rather let the customer service people deal with the pissed
off customers, than the increased number of general inquiry calls.

short - at least that is how it works over here :o)
