As the subject implies, I've just come into an Um - courtesy of NM
hellforge.
What's *YOUR* best recommendation for its use to enhance a sorc?
She's level 57.5, and is currently wearing:
Lore in a "plain" mask
Lidless Wall (+20%FCR)
Spirit in a "plain" crystal sword (+29%FCR)
Stealth in a "plain" field plate (+25%FCR) (15% mana regen helps, too)
Magefist (+20%FCR and 25% mana regen)
Gloom's Trap (+15% mana regen and +15% max mana)
+31% light. res./34 def boots/self repair
2 apprentice rings (+20%FCR between them)
Misc charms, plus cobalt amulet of regrowth putting my NM resistances at:
FR - 16
CR - 43
LR - 75 - "golded out"
PR - 40
She's got a 25 fire bolt, 25 fire ball, 12 fire mastery, pitching
fireballs rated at 2178-2430 at +114% total FCR, with a level 6 glacial
spike - all but one point of that from gear - to fall back on for FIs.
The GS doesn't do all that much damage, but the fire-immunes just kinda
stand there real nice while the merc whomps 'em to death, and she can
keep on hosing them out at high speek forever or until either the merc
or the monster bites it, whichever comes first. :)
She's running around with a NM act 2 combat merc toting an Insight
poleaxe that does 318-496 and keeps her knee-deep in mana - as long as
he stays alive...
I've got runes to build another spirit, and a 160 str when naked -
planning for the monarch (I think someone said that needed a 156 str?)
if I can just get my hands on one to do it in. But then I have to ponder
the choice of Lidless vs Spirit...
Or is that what they call a no-brainer? :)
What, if anything, can an Um do to help this gal?

Not bad. My best NM Hellforges got me a Pul. (2 playing chars, dragging 2
mules: 2 x Pul, 2 x forgetful crap).

Spirit wins hands down. And don't take anyones word for it, check the
requirements of a Monarch yourself:

Actually, my first use of any Um I find (and what I will do with those 2
Puls, after cubing them up to an Um) is to make Duress for a Merc. Only
problem: you need a worthy armor to put it in, preferably a bugged
ethereal 3 socket armor. And those are even somewhat harder to come by
than Ums from an NM or Hell Hellforge.
Beyond that, if you have a _REALLY_ nice Skin of the Vipermagi (35
resall), or a _REALLY_ nice helmet (Harlequin's Crest, rare
20fcr/+2sorc/res/mana/life/etc Circlet, etc) you could consider Um-ing
that for the extra resists.
Beyond that, not much you can do with it. However, if you ever consider
building an UT-running Smiting Paladin, one of those can also use Ums
quiet badly: Um-ed Guillaume's Face and a non-ethereal Duress come to
mind.
Regards, Patrick.

I must agree with you there patrick... I usually make up a duress for the
merc. He verymuch becomes a quick and brutal killer with the bonus of the
CB. :) The fhr and cold damage are also very good to have on him. :)

I must also admit that Cresent Moon is a nice weapon of choice sometimes.
I've had a merc with a Cresent Moon in a Polearm and the Static Field was
going off quite nicely from him. It can sometimes be just as affective if
not more than with the fact that it also has Ignore Targets Defense and -35%
to enemy lightning resist. It's also fairly cheap too. :)

Oh, yeah...
>What, if anything, can an Um do to help this gal?
As you're going with Spirit on the shield, she is going to want res
all in Hell. While they are fine in NM, you should be looking for
better gear than Lore and Stealth in Hell. I'd seriously look at
finding (or imbuing) a good +sorc skills circlet (a shako would be
even better, OC) or armor (like a Vipermagi) and sticking the Um in
it. With such high str, you have a number of alternatives for your
hat and armor, including good rares.

I forget, but maybe resists in a helm.
Now I have to check the other's answers to see if my D2 knowledge is
still intact.
