Is There Any Way To "Activate" Your Merc's Aura?

Doing a NM Meph run, killed about a hundred monsters, and they have all been
abusing him. But no holy freeze.

Anyone shed some light on this for me please?

No way to activate it outside of him engaging in combat and taking hits. If
he still refuses to turn it on after attacking and taking hits from many
monsters(as I've had happen a couple of times) the only solution I've found
is to leave and rejoin.

It finally did activate( a mauler did it).

Still can't believe all those dolls didn't do anything.
