I quit playing D2 when WoW came out. But with D3 coming up, I would
like to start again. I searched high and low, and found some of my
CD's but not all of them. I did however find the CD's with the keys on
them. Is it possible to download the game and use my CD Keys to
upgrade the install?

You can use any keys with any CDs, but there isn't any legal source for
downloading images of the CDs.

You can download D2 and LoD direct from Blizz now, just put in your CD
keys and you can get the downloader. :)

3) Login to blizzard and click "Blizzard Account"
4) Click "Games" (Big thing on bottom-right)
5) Click "Add a New Game"
6) Enter the key for Diablo2 & click "Add Game"

Do you know if the D2 is one big file ?

If so, I'm tempted to download it, to save reinstalling from CDs in
the future...

Can you do this for multiple sets of Diablo II and LOD (I have 2 of both)?

And, can you select which one you will be downloading/installing?

Regards,

Patrick.

When you want to download, you click the windows or mac buttons on the
right-side of the Diablo or LoD game "bars".

Im assuming you can store multiple keys in your account as it has a link
"Show key" but I've not tried downloading more than 1 copy of D2, LOD, etc.
The downloads are using a BitTorrent (peer2peer) fileshare network thats
built into the downloader.  You choose the download location and it creates
all the folders/files for the installer (and its related files) to download
into.

It was gonna take about 2 hours to download Diablo2 using my 4mb/s
connection but as its peer2peer (sharing from other users downloading it)
then the download speeds could change alot over time.  I've not downloaded
anything from there or ran the installers though - I just checked it out and
cancelled the download :)

Hmm, so you get that same crappy downloader Blizzard used for the Diablo
III videos? That was and is total garbage, but luckily I found a tool
which was able to extract the .torrent file, so I could feed that to a
proper BitTorrent client (rTorrent).

And you only get the installer? Which means you have to run the Install
after you've downloaded the stuff, which probably in turn asks you to
enter your CD-keys as part of the installation procedure?

Ah, ok, so you don't know how the procedure continues. ;) But perhaps
someone else can enlighten us what exactly happens here...?

I'm quite curious; I also have Steam installed, but I don't see a way for
that system to provide access to multiple keys for games...

Regards, Patrick.

The Diablo2 and LOD CDs are not made to work only with certain keys, they
accept any legit keys that you give them (even non-legit ones) so Im
guessing the download will be the same... asking for key during install.

I was house-sitting at my sisters this weekend (still am) so decided to
download Diablo instead of take my CDs and write down the steps for you all.
My sister doesnt have usenet setup and doesnt want it though (too many
idiots telling her its full of virii, etc) so Im posting via VNC and wont be
able to read responses until tomorrow but here it goes:

Steps to install Diablo2 from the download:
1) Download the BitTorrent installer
2) Run the installer and choose folder to download too
3) Wait 2+ hours (4mb/sec connection)
4) Click "Install Diablo II"
5) Scroll to bottom of agreement
6) Click "Agree"
7) Enter Name & CD-Key then Click "OK"
8) Choose where to install to & click "OK"
9) Click "Back" and "Exit Installer"

Steps to upgrade Diablo2 from the LOD download:
*** Exactly the same as Diablo2, but LoD installer ***
Note: LOD installer needs the D2 installed first

Steps to run Diablo2:
1) Run video test
2) If not asked to choose mode - try it again
2) If asked to choose mode - use DirectDraw(2D)
3) Rightclick the DiabloII shortcut
4) Select "Properties"
5) Add "-w" (without quotes) after the target line
6) Click "Ok" and run DiabloII
7) Change your gateway to Europe :P
8) Create a character or login to your account
9) Goto chat and type "/w *SantaClaws Hi, Im from AGD2!"

Pff, the downloaded installer asks me for a 26 characters cd-key. My
cd-keys are 28 characters and unrecognized. Pff, I tell you, pff.
Ross (RPJ) - 18 Jul 2008 06:16 GMT
How odd, my CD keys are 16 characters, best I don't lose my installation
disks.

oops, I can't count. The problem still exists though.
The installer asks me to enter a 26 chars key, auto-completing the
"-"s in a "AAAAAA-AAAA-AAAAAA-AAAA-AAAAAA" pattern
My own keys (both D2 and D2LOD keys) are 16 chars keys like yours,
formatted in a "BBBB-BBBB-BBBB-BBBB" pattern. My key comes from a
french box. The downloaded installer is for the english client.

Any help appreciated - I might just pop out my old cds if all else
fail.

You created the game-banner by entering the long key on blizzard.com and
then it gives you a download for the english client that only supports a
shorter key?

...and your sure there was nowhere to select the french client on the
website/download (when adding key or during the BitTorrent downloader?)

Nah, actually the opposite.
I created the game banner by entering the short key on blizzard.com,
then it gave me a download for the english client that only supports a
long key.
I just found the solution by the way, got a tip from a friend who got
it from his cousin.

"Talked to my cousin, he got it to work.

Quote:
Till siger:
your own old key doesn't work
Till siger:
it's just used for adding the game online
Till siger:
you have to use the new one you get by clicking on "view cd-key"
Till siger:
that one worked fine then"

And now it's working fine.

Cool, I think I have to adjust the FAQ... that's what you get when you stay
away for too long. Has anybody ever tried it though?

Gunde

It's probably way past time to post a link to to Gunde's FAQ.
Here's what I have in my bookmarks

I've still been using your FAQ and sometimes sending people there - lol

I was around for the GreenTeam thing but was away on holday when you did it,
I think.
I can remember playing UsWest originally until I got tired of the 300+
pings.

Nice to see you back anyways - material is ready now if you want to update
:)
