RichZ - 07 Jul 2008 18:38 GMT I am playing as a Barbarian, SP, ACT IV, Nightmare, with an ACT II Might Merc. Using Frenzy/Double Swing, I am inflicting massage amounts of damage, which results in dying immediately when an Oblivian Knight casts Iron Maiden. Is this just the basic flaw with this type of build, and is there any recourse around this? Thanks

Nothing you can do but run away and wait for the curse to leave, and then try something else. You can't stop it, and they always cast it.
I honestly can't remember how I got my barb through in single player, but online I was always with a group. Someone would call out "okies!", and the big bad barb would run away.
Maybe berserk, as it is magic damage, or get yourself a bow. I can't remember if using berserk triggers it though.
Sorry I can't give you a quick fix answer.

Berserk converts all damage to magic. You can safely berserk around OK's without fear. Just grab a high-block shield and a massive damage 1-h weapon and have at it!
Alternately, you can use thrown items, but unless you are explicitly making a throw barb, I would not recommend this option outside of normal since the damage w/out mastery is just so very low.

Is it viable to cast War Cry (2.4 second stun), then Beserk, then wail away for a couple of seconds? I will have to level up as I havent put any points in Beserk yet. I read that if you have Defense = 0, and a shield, you might end up blocking all the time?

That is a valid concern.
Usually I only put 1 point in Berserk, and I only use that against physical immunes, or while in areas where there are oblivion knights. Block-lock has never really been a problem for me. Yeah, it can be annoying get that clink-clink-clink sound with the swing-stutter action, but it's temporary, and eventually the bad guys are all dead anyway. One thing that I NEVER do it berserk in a crowd w/out a shield. That's plain suicide.
Well, that's not really true. As you mentioned, War Cry will stun the enemies around you. Unfortunately, 2.4 seconds is not that long, and it goes fast! I only bother to use War Cry if I intend to max it. With max War Cry, you can safely berserk without a shield, although I would still recommend the shield.
My last barbarian had 20 hard point in War Cry, and he was the most fun of all my barbarians (and I have made a lot of barbarians!) Ever since then, I cannot imagine a barbarian foolish enough to not max that skill. :)

sparks - 09 Jul 2008 12:43 GMT I asked a friend who plays barbs a LOT he said get a wand with a bunch of magic damage. you know wand does 6 damage that will come back to you. +120 lightning +240 fire that sort of wand... buy them from the vendors in town
he said its slow but there are only a few of these guys in this one level.

Be aware that if you use Berserk and run out of mana or are mana burned, you can make a normal attack and die.

I hadnt thought of the mana burn scenario, but I dont think it impacted me.
