Im not sure what to do.
I dont know if I like the news or not.
I've been waiting, hoping & dreaming so long.

What if it doesnt live upto our expectations?
What if its pay2play as I cant afford that?
What if the barbarian mocks me for crying when its finally released?

Its like dating your perfect partner online... then meeting them for the
first time...
...Im shell-shocked and when its released... Im gonna be a nervous wreck :¬/

The only what-if I'm wondering about is what if they charge a rediculous fee
to play online.  The success of WOW must have them counting the possible
cha-ching of this franchise.  There's room on your Visa, right?

They will or they won't. We shall see.

However, I see that they've learned well from WoW. Only two character
classes on release? What's the bet that there will be regular, expensive
expansions available to give new classes, maps etc.? So, even though they're
catering for SP (woohooo!!!) I'm thinking that, even soloists are going to
be bled dry if they want to keep up with the latest... I bet levels are
capped to start too.

Relaaaax children.

From the official FAQ:

How many character classes are included in Diablo III? What are
they?

Five character classes will be included in the game, two of which, the
barbarian and witch doctor, were revealed when the game was announced
at the 2008 Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational. The other
classes will be announced at a later date.

Everyone just needs ta calmdown lol, its like with SC2, Blizzard
teasing us through the Protoss and Terran and waiting months before we
saw the all-new Zerg. They'll stretch out the other 3 classes for at
least 6 months.

Heres something I grabbed from gamereplays.org which was a transcript
from somewhere else:

Recently, the press had a Q&A session with Jay Wilson, Diablo 3's lead
developer, and Frank Pearce, Blizzard's vice president. Here's what
the two had to say on Blizzard's latest project, Diablo 3.

Q: If I'm a WoW player - why should I be excited about D3?

A: It’s a very easy game, it's quick so it can be played in a small
time frame, and because it's a great co-operative game.

Q: Engine?

A: It's a brand new engine developed in-house a few years ago (they
don't name their engines).

Q: Release date?

A: When it's done.

Q: How long has it been in development?

A: Development was still taking place in Blizz North before it was
shut down. It was in dev there for two years, and for two and a half
years in Irvine since.

Q: How was it kept a secret for so long?

A: We’re a very security oriented company because we know the returns
an announcement like this gives us. And it's the employees. They're
very proud of their work. They like to keep it under wraps.

Q: Was this the Hydra project?

A: We don't publicly talk about our codenames.

Q: Will Diablo III have eSports potential?

A: We have plans to add PVP and competitive elements and eSports are
very important to us but at this time we have no further comment.

Q: Is there a limit to the number of players in the same game?

A: Right now it's eight-ish. It's really about the co-operative feel
to the game and the gameplay value that a certain number provides.
We're experimenting with less. But we haven't decided.

Q: Will gameplay differ by the number of participants?

A: We aren't revealing some features that address this yet. But the
wealth system is co-operative. The loot is no longer fought over. What
you see drop is just for you. It's based on your character class etc.

Q: Will D3 be available for the MAC?

A: Yes

Q: How many classes will there be?

A: We haven't decided on a final number but there will be several
more.

Q: Will D3 be available for any consoles?

A: Blizzard has an interest in breaking into console gaming but we
have no plans to do so at this time.

Q: Will the NPC's from D2 be present in D3?

A: Not all of the characters will make it.

Q: Could you tell us a bit more about the monster design?

A: They're meant to be cooperative. Like the summoners, or others that
can buff their comrades - they're supposed to contribute to each
other’s strengths. But there are so many more monsters to reveal.

Q: Will there be auction houses?

A: We haven't made a decision about auction houses. The ad-hoc trading
in D2 wasn't the best of experiences for the gamer and we want that to
be the best it can be. We're very focused on the experience of the
player. So we'll probably revamp it.

Q: How large is the dev team?

A: Somewhere around 50-55 members.

Q: Where does the story pick up?

A: It starts twenty years later. Essentially it's a period that's far
enough away from the invasion. It's far enough away that most people
think that it's mostly mystical. Any characters that lived and
experienced the events of D2 directly have mostly gone mad. This is to
distance the game from its predecessor. It also raises some good
questions - like why did Hell's invasion not occur? We have some very
good answers to those questions.

Q: Will there be something similar to the WoW armory for D3?

A: We have definite intentions to add functionality on the web. But
right now it's just to early to talk about.

Q: Will the maps still be randomly generated?

A: Yes, and we're experimenting with randomizing in different ways
such as random weapons, monsters etc. There will be some static levels/
sequences. Also we're trying something new called Adventures - which
are random events.

Q: Will there be strong scenario scenes like D2 (desert, jungle, etc)?

A: Yes, those are good for gaming - since it's bland to play in
something that isn't clearly defined. Tristram will reappear and the
teaser obviously shows others, like the cities and other such ones.

Q: Will there be custom gear?

A: Yes, there'll be all sorts of crazy stuff.

Q: Are you worried about people leaving WoW for D3?

A: We don't really look at it that way - they're still playing
Blizzard games and there isn't as much overlap as you'd think.

Q: Will there be real physics?

A: Yes, but some events will be scripted. The player will be able to
tell the difference when he's supposed to use the environment to
accomplish something. And interaction with the environment is
definitely encouraged.

Q: Will there be a difficulty structure like D2?

A: Yes, but we haven't decided on anything.

Q: Will hardcore mode be included?

A: There's no reason not to - it's a popular feature.

Q: Will there be physics puzzles?

A: We could if we wanted to but we're more of a “kill monsters team
building” than a “kill lots of monsters” game.

Q: Will it follow a subscription model or will it be free to play out
of the box?

A: We haven't decided on our financial model.

Q: What is the most important aspect of the game?

A: The character driven elements. This is an RP game with a lot of
lore that drives the game.

Q: Will there be an end game?

A: We haven't decided but if we do it will be very cool.

Q: What options are available to customize our characters before
starting the game?

A: Just the gender.

Q: Will the gender of your character have any affect on the gameplay
experience?

A: No.

Q: Will bosses have their own levels similar to WoW?

A: The simple answer is yes. We use games like Zelda and WoW as
inspiration for our monsters. But we're trying to improve upon those
as well.

Q: Will there be a Secret Cow Level?

A: No comment.

Q: Will the town portal system of movement still be used or are you
going to make it more sophisticated?

A: We'll probably change it but we haven’t decided yet.

Q: Will there be mounts?

A: We talked about it but we decided that no, there won't be.

Q: Will there be a demo/beta?

A: It will probably follow the same system as other Blizzard releases.

And this means? Probably a closed beta. sad.gif

Q: What's the primary difference between D2 and D3?

A: The character classes are different and the emphasis on the
character driven story. The monster design is more focused and so is
the level design. Also there's more opportunity to be engaged in the
story but you won't be forced into it.

Q: Will there be seasonal events like in WoW?

A: Good idea, but it is far too early to decide that.

Q: Will the items be tied better to the lore?

A: All the major weapons will have a better tie - obviously not
everything but we'll be tying lots more than in D2.

Q: Will the Horadric cube make a return?

A: No comment.

Q: Will mule characters still be needed/allowed?

A: We're going to make trading between your characters much easier. We
have lots of ideas that we're not ready to talk about for making
inventories better, etc.

Q: Will private servers be supported?

A: No.

Q: Will you continue to support SC and D2 even after their sequels are
released?

A: Yes, we'll continue to support our legacy games as long as there's
a community and people that play them.

Q: Will there be a built-in voice feature?

A: We haven't reached a decision but definitely probable.

Q: Will D3 still be an M rated game?

A: The other two were; there's no reason to think this one won't too.

Q: Will D3 be supported/updated with new content similar to WoW's
content patches?

A: That hasn't been decided yet. But at the very least we're designing
the game to be compatible for expansions.

Q: Will the community be able to contribute to D3?

A: D3 isn't a mod friendly game because of the randomness. So not
really.

Q: Will you allow UI mods?

A: No. We find that it can change the game experience for the worse -
making a simple game too complicated.

Q: Where in development are you?

A: As hardcore production as we can of content. We love to play it as
much as we can.

Q: What will the level cap be?

A: That hasn't been decided. But why not one hundred it's only one
more than ninty-nine. But it will be similar to D2.

Q: Bill Roper was important to the franchise - how does his leaving
affect the development of D3?

A: We have so many talented developers that it really isn't about just
one person. On a personal note - I think we both miss Bill.

Q: How has the development of D3 changed since its inception?

A: The core ideas have stayed. We really just needed to find our
visual and gameplay style.

Q: Will you enforce team gameplay?

A: No, but we encourage it. People that are playing together are going
to appreciate this game.

Q: Can you play alone if you wish?

A: Absolutely.

Q: Will there be a system that allows a high level player and a low
level player to play together and both receive a benefit.

A: Yes, we're looking at ways to make this happen.

Q: What is the coolest feature of this game and which are you most
proud of?

A: We didn't release the coolest feature, but I'm most proud of the
character development and classes. The game is really about becoming
these characters. They all have their own stories and plot lines.

Yeah, right! You gotta hook 'em before you can reel 'em in. You don't let
the fish see the hook, ergo you don't tell the punter up-front that the
original purchase is just the beginning.

As I speculated. (That's a contradictory answer from Blizz BTW but you can
see where it's going....)

Still, as long as I don't need a major hardware upgrade I'll probably raid
the grocery money when it's released.

Does anyone have any idea when it's going to be released?

Patrick Vervoorn - 30 Jun 2008 15:32 GMT
First off, I haven't reacted, but did manage to download the assorted
released videos this weekend. Especially the gameplay trailer (800MB)
proved to be a bit hard to download, but after extracting the torrent from
the Blizzard downloader en feeding that to a proper torrent client
(rtorrent) things progressed much smoother.

Good and interesting news. The gameplay video showed a very pretty world,
but I suppose it's nothing a proper graphics card can't handle. I.e.
8800GT or up. By the time the game is out, graphics hardware should
certainly be up to snuff.

It also certainly looks a lot prettier than Mythos; especially the
animated world is a lot more detailed; flowing water, moving grass, etc,
etc.

Some comments on the interview though...

>Q: Is there a limit to the number of players in the same game?
>
>A: Right now it's eight-ish. It's really about the co-operative feel
>to the game and the gameplay value that a certain number provides.
>We're experimenting with less. But we haven't decided.

No changes here, for now in any case.

>wealth system is co-operative. The loot is no longer fought over. What
>you see drop is just for you. It's based on your character class etc.

Seems they learned from how Mythos does this; so no more loot
grabbing/rushing. Good.

>
>A: They're meant to be cooperative. Like the summoners, or others that
>can buff their comrades - they're supposed to contribute to each
>other’s strengths. But there are so many more monsters to reveal.

The gameplay video demonstrated this a bit; it's nice to see killing a
monsters (like the bloated type) doesn't end things yet: they spawn a
second wave of lesser monsters.

I suppose they'll expand the way certain monsters can help other monters;
how far beyond the raising/healing we see in D2 they'll take this, remains
to be seen...

>Q: Will there be auction houses?

>in D2 wasn't the best of experiences for the gamer and we want that to

Let's hope they deliver here; there's certainly a lot to be improved here.

>Q: Will there be something similar to the WoW armory for D3?

What is the 'WoW armory'?

>sequences. Also we're trying something new called Adventures - which

Sounds like the random missions provided in Mythos. Which is good, since
Mythos certainly fixed a few of the nagging problems Diablo II had, so why
re-invent the wheel...

>Q: Will there be custom gear?

Always good.

>Q: Are you worried about people leaving WoW for D3?
>

Well, _if_ D3 is _not_ pay-to-play, people moving over will certainly
affect them... Of course, that's a big if.

>Q: Will it follow a subscription model or will it be free to play out
>of the box?
>
>A: We haven't decided on our financial model.

This sure is an important one for me; I don't play WoW mainly because of
the subscription model. So if it's pay-to-play, I'll think long and hard,
and maybe limit myself to SP play, if I even buy the game.

On the other hand, if they make it free, I'm in. Besides, if they still
keep the basic structure like Diablo II (8 player games, very little
interaction between games), this should be able to run in the idle time of
WoW servers...

>Q: What options are available to customize our characters before
>starting the game?
>
>A: Just the gender.

This is a bit lame; I mean, they have all this detail, and then you can
only pick a male or female character. Of course, most of the details will
be hidden beneath the armor, but still... Look at the Mythos character
creation for what's possible.

>Q: Will the Horadric cube make a return?
>
>A: No comment.

I don't think they can do without. Although you can implement crafting
without a cube (see Mythos again).

>Q: Will mule characters still be needed/allowed?
>
>A: We're going to make trading between your characters much easier. We
>have lots of ideas that we're not ready to talk about for making
>inventories better, etc.

We'll see how they solve this... I'd be very happy if I don't have to
manage accounts full of mules anymore though...

>Q: Will there be a system that allows a high level player and a low
>level player to play together and both receive a benefit.
>
>A: Yes, we're looking at ways to make this happen.

This'd be neat, and I'm curious as to the way they're going to solve
this...

Beyond that, I'll be waiting and seeing what other info turns up in the
coming months...

Indeed. My first thoughts upon watching it was "This looks like a sexier
Mythos".

Well, I don't know what game invented the idea, but I know Guild Wars was
handling loot drops that way a couple years before Mythos did it.

And WoW shared the gold that dropped in a party right from the very
beginning and let the party leader choice the loot options.  Generally
group loot was used, where people take turns to loot the mobs that
have been killed, and depending on the level it's set at, any actual
items that drop are either taken by the person whose turn it is to
loot, or it pops up up a window where the group can randomly roll for
the item or pass on it.  Or there's master loot, where drops of a
certain level are given to the party leader to give to whoever they
think should have it.  Or there's plain round robin which I've never
seen get used, where you get all the drops that drop from the mob that
dies on your turn order.  Or there's free for all where the person
that loots the mob, gets the drops.

It sounds like D3 may make it so that when looting, it's like WoW's
group loot.  Who ever's turn it's up to will get the items that are
specifically tailored for their class.

Let's see if/when the Mythos folks up the ante again. Besides their new
'WoW-lookalike' mode, they've changed very little to the graphics, while
I've been playing in any case...

My apologies, I didn't mean to to imply Mythos invented this way of
handling drops, but it was, for me in any case, the first game where I
encountered this method...

I think it was Patrick Vervoorn
<patrick.vervoorn@NOSPAM.perihelion.demon.nl> that wrote something
like...

[quoted text clipped - 3 lines]
>Well, _if_ D3 is _not_ pay-to-play, people moving over will certainly

Only if they stop playing WoW at the same time.  D3 may be the game
they play while the WoW servers are undergoing maintenance, or when
they can't find groups for doing stuff in WoW.

They also may be expecting to pick up a different market with D3.
Sort of like if you put out a first person shooter, you don't really
expect it to be competing with the real time strategy game you already
have out.

>>Q: Will it follow a subscription model or will it be free to play out
>>of the box?
[quoted text clipped - 4 lines]
>the subscription model. So if it's pay-to-play, I'll think long and hard,
>and maybe limit myself to SP play, if I even buy the game.

Maybe I missed the spot where they said it, but what I've read so far
is that the game will be designed to be solo'able, not that it'll be
single player.  Just like D2 on the realms, you can play by yourself,
but you still have to connect to battle.net, and if they charge to
connect to battle.net with D3, then whether you're playing by yourself
or in a group, you'd still have to pay.
But they may stick with the D2 model and have a single player option.
If I was doing it, I'd certainly be inclined to go that way.  Living
in Australia anyway, you don't really assume that everyone and their
dog is going to have broadband to go with their computer, so putting
in a single player component to pick up that part of the market seems
like a good idea.

>On the other hand, if they make it free, I'm in. Besides, if they still
>keep the basic structure like Diablo II (8 player games, very little

I'm not sure that the WoW servers are ever all that idle. ; )
People from the USA are regularly playing till around 2 to 3 in the
morning and then others get up around 6 or 7 to start playing.  And of
course there are the Australians and New Zealanders to fill in the
time between those two times.  It's a bit quieter then admittedly.

Errr? Play both WoW and D3 parallel to each-other? You are surely kidding?

While, besides the pay-to-play, the humongous amounts of time you have to
pour into WoW is another blockade for me to play it, Diablo 2 is also
rather limited in what you can achieve when only playing a few hours a
week.

To get anywhere in Diablo II, you need to pour in quite a lot of time. And
we've all seen how well playing both goes together in this newsgroup. ;)

While I don't know WoW, so I cannot comment on it's similarities to Diablo
II, the fact that a lot of Diablo II players moved over to WoW, or even
the other way back, suggests there is quite a bit of overlap.

I'm curious what kind of drop in WoW-playage Blizzard will see when they
release Diablo 3. Of course, they'll never make that public. ;)

I hadn't looked at it from your standpoint above; I more or less
automatically assumed they'd include some kind of SP mode in Diablo 3,
since that's also in Diablo 1 and 2. If they even leave that out, I have
_very_ little incentive to buy it at all, all of which of course depends
on their online playing model.

Well, I didn't really mean this literally, but just to indicate that I
don't think a (properly designed I must add!) Diablo 2 or 3 server
shouldn't need honking big servers to run on.

From the FAQ at http://eu.blizzard.com/diablo3/faq/#1_9 :-

"Will there be a single-player component in addition to multiplayer?

Yes. In addition to battling the hordes of the Burning Hells
cooperatively with friends over Battle.net, players will be able to
adventure through the world of Diablo III solo. More details on both the
single-player and multiplayer experience will be revealed at a later
date."

I took this to mean there will be an SP mode as with Diablo I & II.  I
daresay you could read it as just being able to play solo on Battle.net
though. I hope not.

I only play SP, so if there's no SP mode on DIII I shall have to
reluctantly pass on it. :-(

Ahh, I didn't re-check what I'd read and was just remembering the "In
addition to battling the hordes of the Burning Hells cooperatively
with friends over Battle.net, players will be able to adventure
through the world of Diablo III solo".  But yeah, in context that
sounds like off-line play.  Probably just my experience with WoW where
some of the content can only be completed in groups, so saying that
the content is solo'able doesn't mean it can be done off-line.

I think your interpretation is fair enough, because they don't
explicitly mention playing offline at any point. WE shall just have to
wait and see, I suppose :-)

A place where you can look up your or another players' gear, stats,
talents, skills, etc. For instance, my Main (first level 70, currently
the max level, and *only* 60 back when that was the max) can be found
at http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Llane&n=Sisald,
though most of the information there will probably be pretty useless

Well, it's all very similar to Diablo 2 eh? In your case: weapons, armor,
rings, 'trinkets' (amulets?), etc. ;)

Anyway, something like this would be nice indeed, if only to save the
amount of info you have to type-over when providing your equipment/stats
when asking questions here (or elsewhere).

Of course, what they really should address are duping (so that you get a
viable and realistic economy running), and, while this doesn't really
affect me since I play SC, the 'involuntary' PvP/PK stuff.

Pretty much, although the two trinkets are in addition to the one
amulet, not instead of.

Ayup, it's very handy for that, although some people see a drawback
there. They'll log out in their "town outfit" (no, I and most people
don't have one, I'm a packrat, where would I put it? ;-) ) so that
opponents can't check to see what they're wearing. From what I've
heard this is mostly the better Arena players (think consensual PvP
for points that can get you better gear), but I don't see the point in
it since your opponents can inspect you in-game.

Agreed with the duping, which simply doesn't exist in WoW, but even in
WoW there are ways to get "flagged" without meaning to, until you know
all the rules (and sometimes even then, there was a snake trap bug for
a short while where a Hunter could basically flag you without your
doing anything, but they cleared that up pretty quickly).
Unfortunately, Blizzard *likes* the PvP play, so I expect that it will
always be in their games, and people will always try to find a way to
take advantage of it ;-/

Interesting screen shot, shame that it's either faked or at the very
least edited (the toon at the AH shows as a ghost, ghosts don't have
life or mana bars and can't view the AH). Also, while I'm not saying
this *wasn't* a case of duping, it's entirely possible to have 8 BoE
Epics at one time, without duping, either by running the boss that
drops them multiple times, or by trying to corner the market at the AH
(I've done that a couple times with some (*much*) lower priced items).
Even if it is a screen shot of someone successfully duping, I'm pretty
sure the Warden was operational when I started playing, roughly nine
months after the European Open Beta ended, so I guess I should modify
my statement to read "... which I've never seen to exist in WoW" ;-)

The best news, for me, is that there *will* be a single player mode.

I was fearful that it would be online-only.

Ditto.

However, especially after seeing there are only two classes on release,  the
cynic in me says expect to have to buy new expansions every few months if

FAQ states there will be 5 classes in D3.  Im guessing they just arent
finished yet (like much of the game world).  Engine looks almost (or
completely) finished so its probably just needing alot of art work, scripts,
etc added... give it 6month to a year :¬)

Following a link from another post I read that the release date is
09/30/2009.

http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3138257

They seem set on keeping the status quo as far as pricing; in other words,
you buy the game, you can play SP or play on BattleNet. No subscriptions.

I'm in. :-)

If that's the case then I'm in too. I mean, I have at least 14 months to
save up the money. <g>

Actually, maybe not "<g>". I'll probably need to spend another NZ$300 or so
on a graphics card. Somehow, for an '09 release game, I don't think my
7800GT will cut it.

Hmm, maybe it will:

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/06/30/blizzard-snubs-nvidia-diablo

Extract:

"First off: the game will run on XP as well as Vista, with DirectX 10 being

Innerestin'. My "old" DX 9 card might just do it yet.

Having finally got the gameplay video to work, I have to say it looks
very impressive. Not sure about those red blobs replacing potions, but
it wasn't clear whether that's the *only* way to regain health or not.

I wonder what the other three character classes will be?

Since any of them can be either male or female, I'm assuming not Amazons
or Rogues, both of which have to be female for story reasons.

Probably some sort of sorceror, at least. And likely a class that uses

Sounds likely - I'm just trying to think of something they haven't
already done, but I daresay they just have to change the name and tweak
a few details :-)

The Witchdoctor strikes me as a combination of some of the traits of the
Druid and Necromancer from DII, at least to some extent - looks like fun
to play though :-)

I hope so - I do like my bows and arrows :-)

Something else I noticed in the video was some sort of "pants" so it
looks as if there'll be leg armour.

As I watched the trailer and part of the gameplay video I kept waiting for a
punchline, a gotcha, or some sort of April Fools joke but it looks real

I'm pretty sure my CPU will be up to the job (Intel Core 2 Duo running at
3.3GHz) but I'm not so sure about my graphics card. It's getting old now as
far as cutting-edge gaming goes; nVidia 7800GT, DX 9.

I think an equal expense is going to be regular expansion packs. The days of
the whole damn game (at least for SP) being released at once are gone I'm
afraid. Now it's buy it bit-by-bit. This sales model has been getting more
and more prevalent and Blizz are good at pushing the envelope (read:
bleeding the punters).

Still, who would have thought? <g>

(yeah, I'm talking about that other game here) never played D2, but
met one of our founding members (if he isn't, he should be, I got him

All I can say is, Wow!!  The gameplay looks awesome.  I want to build a
D3 Barb so bad right now.  The scenes look great too.  Looks like an
updated D2 which is just what I wanted.  Now for the bad part...online
will cost $$$$$.  I guess D3 single player will have to do.  Guessing
that D2 online will be phased out?  Perhaps they can port to Xbox360??
Imagine on a PSP.  That would be hot.

Great, and for the Mac fans Blizzard say that they will be releasing the
OS X version at the same time.  Roll on!

Saber, I'm pretty sure Azrael_Warraven is stoked to play as well.

Anybody see U lately?

Wow Tox, great to hear from you. We have been talking a bit about U, and his
4th of July birthday thread.

Hope he and a lot of other oldtimers show up.

I'm hoping we hear from Regnitto and Cymtyr, a couple guys I killed a LOT of
monsters with, lol.

In fact I heard Regnitto popped in a few months ago.

Meep meep! I'm having trouble finding something to read the newsgroup
with besides Google, so I may not be able to respond to every thread.
I'm back though, and I'm ready for some fresh agd2 action!

Currently I'm playing WoW and some D2 on USEast.  How have you been?
Well, I hope.

Things are going pretty good for me, I'm 28 now, a lot closer to 30
than I was when  I used to frequent this newsgroup... hehe funny how
life goes by at such an alarming pace.  I'm really looking forward to
Diablo 3, and I'm happy Ald mentioned you guys to me in-game this
morning, so now I'm back and I'll try to be a constructive part of the
community ;)

Let me know how you're doing!

Howdy old friend. It is fine indeed to hear from you!

I am glad to hear you are well. I am as well as can be expected for a ..
lets just say fortiesh old man, heh.

Thanks loads to Ald for mentioning us.

By the way, a couple days ago I went over to the Warcraft group to see if
you hung out there, but I didn't see any posts by you.

Glad to see you still have the old nym, it's a nice blast from the past.

Hope to hear more from you in the future.

28, huh? Youngster.

Take care

Hehe yeah I just loaded up Google today and figured I'd post a message
letting you know I'm still around.

Unfortunately Time Warner discontinued newsgroup service so it looks
like I'll be checking in via google :{

Anyway if you play WoW at all I play on Llane. And yes I kept the
name :D  As I said I'm playing D2 on USEast since I moved back to
Ohio, so I'm online at various points but from what I remember most of
us used to play on West together.

I suppose I might be persuaded to start an account on West ;)

While we're not on the subject, here, where Cym hopefully sees it,
anyone know of a good, free news server? We got Cym set up with Agent,
or Outlook Express, but as he mentions down-thread, he doesn't have a
news server, and I *hate* to see friends suffer through Google groups.

Fortiesh, huh? Whippersnapper ;-)

Nope, I'm paying for Giganews.

Yup, I'm now paying for xprivate, after using their free service for
years, then dropping them when they started charging (15 euros a year,
or about 17 dollars, very affordable). Fortunately, I still had their
emails when my ISP basically decided to drop all of the interesting
parts of Usenet ;-/

I have to ask: Why do y'all pay for these when there are free alternatives
like motzarella? Binaries?

For me, basically because I didn't know about motzarella until the
post here (it's now bookmarked, I might check it out when my year of
xprivate is up). At one point, probably when xprivate went to a pay
system, I'd googled for free news servers, but didn't find any that
were satisfactory. I went back to using my ISP's server, but as I
mentioned, they just recently basically dropped Usenet. Although I'd
had all of a week's warning, I couldn't get an answer from them (or
their new provider) about whether my groups would be affected or not,
so when I found myself without a news server, I took the easy way out
and signed up with xprivate, since I had their emails.

I also have to mention that if I'd been more financially able at the
time they went to a pay system, I probably would have stuck with
xprivate. They were getting a *lot* of posts that my ISP had been
missing, and doing a decent job of filtering out the spam. Obviously,
I didn't have time this time to do the head-to-head comparison that I
did when I first switched to them, but I've seen nothing so far to
make me think the service has lessened. Now if I could only remember
the group (*long* ago unsubscribed to) that they occasionally post to
... ;-)

I'm using News.Individual.NET for a very reasonable 10 euros per year
and find their service to be very decent. No binary groups though.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

I have an uncle who uses AT&T (Bellsouth), and yesterday he found this on
their site when he couldn't connect to a group:

<excerpt>
We'll continue to provide access to newsgroups as part of our broadband
offering, but we'll no longer include alt.bin* nor alt.bain* hierarchies
because of the possibility of child pornography in those particular groups
and the difficulty in ensuring that no child porn reappears in them.
</excerpt>

My uncle argues, not unreasonably, that "why not just shut down the news
server? Say, there is a lot of unlawful content on the web! They should
block their customers from accessing the web! Oh!!  What if someone were
to e-mail unlawful content? Better shut that down, too!"

Makes sense, no?

I responded that IMO ISPs don't give a rat's piss about customers any
more; they've gotten too big. All it will take for me is one more little
nudge and I'm switching to our "local" cable provider. That nudge could be
an announcement that Windstream is falling in line and blocking content.
Just waiting.

LOL, I didn't see that the first time I read your post!

I don't know how long you have been hanging around agd2, but 5 or 6 years
ago we had a "how old is everyone" thread.

As it turned out we are a well seasoned crew.

Some might consider that odd for a computer game, but I don't think so.

I don't believe there is another game community quite like the agd2 folks.

A special game, a special bunch of people.
