You could try one of the free news servers before signing up for a
paid one. I am unfortunately posting this message from google groups,
but at home I use nntp.aoie.org. Seems reasonably reliable.

Free one - news.motzarella.org
So far works nicely.

Very happy customer for approximately eight years, first it was free, but
they are doing a very good filtering job, so I don't mind paying for the
service.

Hi Gunde, good to 'see' you.
Good to know that NIN are still going strong. I used to use them when they
were free also but when they first went pay I didn't have the means to pay
(no credit card or Paypal at the time) so instead I changed ISP to one that
has an NNTP service bundled.
I've always thought that, if I ever need to use a seperate service, NIN will
be the providor I use.

Seconded. And it's only a small charge too, 10 euro a year. Not sur what
that works out in dollars, but it's about £7 here in Merrie England.
That said though, the intermediary service that processes the payments
can be a touch idiosyncratic :-)

In what way? I usually get a reminder by mail that my subscription is about
to run out, and a second one that my bank transfer has arrived in their
account and that the subscription has been renewed.

I had considerable difficulty updating my details when my card expired.
I think I had to input the card as a new one eventually because the page
simply wouldn't accept the revised details. I've heard from others who
had similar problems.
