I got tired of game pauses, so I downloaded Alcohol 52%. It makes an
image of the disc on your hard drive. No more pauses or skips.

I use d2Loader. Just copy the .mpq's to the diablo folder then run the
loader. Same premise as Alcohol i guess. Bottom line is, your dics stays in
its jewel case, keeping it in tiptop shape for reinstalls :)

Another way to stop this is just copy the mpq files to your diablo
directory.

You could also copy the *.mpq files from your D2X-CD to your
Diablo2 directory on your HD. Then you won't have any CD
access, besides copy-protection at prog-startup.

When you install the expansion you have the option to do a FULL install.
The FULL install copies the movies and music to your hard drive
minimizing CD access. The FULL install option is on the flash screen
when you put the expansion CD in the CD drive. If it's not then you've
already done it.

Yeah, I did that from the start. Like I had said, this wasn't an issue
at all until I started Act V, then it seemed to be reading from the disc
a lot more often.

Just out of curiosity, did you do the FULL install off of the LOD
disc? It sounds to me like you didn't. It's easy to check, just
put the LOD disc back in and see if it asks you if you want the
full install.

Yes I did.

Nope, full install still isn't a full install afaik. it will leave 2
extra MPQs to be read from the disc. just pop in the CD and copy/paste
all the MPQs into the diablo 2 folder on your hard drive, voila all
smooth

Ah, good to know. I definitely chose the option for a "Full Install",
but apparently that's not good enough, like you say. :)

Correct.

I experimented a little with this. For some reason even when using
filemon I could not see what file was accessed on the CD. Perhaps since
it was on an external device. IDK. During gameplay I ejected the CD
and the in game music (menu) stopped playing but the game kept going
without a problem. Kinda nice. There is one MPQ file that is on the CD
and not on the disk and it's the (IIRC) d2xmusic.mpq file. I copied
this one to the hard drive and this seems to have limited the CD access.
I guess you could try playing with the CD out once the game has
started but I think the game might hose up eventually like when
completing an act and the movies play. Not sure. Guess I'll try that
later.

As "Apoptygma" and I said before, a full install is ANYTHING BUT A
FULL INSTALL!
So grab BOTH D2 and LOD CDs and copy ALL MPQ-files to your HD.
