I'm not likely going to be playing it. I've finished downloading a patch of
495meg.. Mind you it's not really since by the time i downloaded it from the
site it took most of a gig of downloading.. Guess what? I go to log in
today... Starts downloading a new patch. 492meg. I'm not going to wait for
it to download... I'm not going to bother. Stupid blizzard.. Why do they
need to make patches so frigin big. *sigh*

WoW is orders of magnitude more polished and bug free than D2, but still
I have my complaints. If they're trying to get people to move to WoW
they should make the demo as smooth an install as possible. But what you
say is true and you're not the first to complain about it. I don't see
what the problem would be to make sure that the initial download was
patched 100% already so you didn't have to wait again *after* installing
it. Still, if only to "know your enemy" it's worth the wait to get a
feel for the game. The strangest thing though, I've found many ex D2
players come across very bitter when they start WoW and don't give it a
chance. I'm wondering if it's almost a type of jealousy as people feel
Blizzard has neglected D2 in favour of WoW?

Really not practical. Every Tuesday WOW gets tweeked for maintainance,
content, and bugs. A demo install couldn't possibly be the most current
version.

Why? I've had to put together a few installs in my time, and building a
complete install with all patches included can be automated easily, at
least with the products I developed on.

Actually, he said he paid $2 for it, so he got the trial version on
DVD from a shop, not a download.  If he had have gone the free
download, then yeah, I'd be surprised if he had to do more than the
last few meg patch.
But keeping all the DVD's that have already been shipped out to the
shops patched might be a bit tricky.  ; )

Oops, I missed that part, and yeah in that case, no chance.

But Ashen, a friend of mine downloaded the demo and then had to wait for
the huge patches once he'd installed it. Seems stupid to me if they're
trying to attract customers.

Yeah, that seems a bit off.
I started with the $2 DVD before I think it was available as a
download so I've no experience personally.
Only thing I can think of that might be a reason for your friend
having to get patches is if they got the download from something like
fileplanet or such and not directly from Blizzard, and so got an old
demo version. *shrug*

Hi Ashen.

What I find amusing is that most places still sell D2, at a price that is
around the same as it cost new (at least in NZ, with inflation taken into
account). I've spoken to a manager in DSE and he says that they're
constantly ordering new stock. However, the new stuff is still version 1.03!
(With LoD patching it to 1.07.) Sure, the patches arent as big as WoW
patches but that really is lazy on Blizzard's part IMO.

Cheers,

Frankly, I'm surprised that D2 is still supported after all these years,
and that it still has a nice sized community playing it. I would have
thought interest would have died out well before WoW was released, but
it's nice that it hasn't.

Any word on Diablo 3? :)

I'm not. They are still selling it on the store shelves here, so they had
better keep supporting it! I think it was only a year or two ago I read it
was still one of the best selling games of all time.

Well i've decided to Un-Install it as to i'm not waiting for it to download
so much just to play the game for a 14day trial. I've seen the demo's that
the stores have sometimes running on the pc's instore and it looks good too.
But you can't stand there playing in the store for hours either. I don't
actually think they're connected to the actual WoW network. I think there's
a Virtual Realm which they install so as to act like it's the real thing.
I'm not jealous of the game. Infact i admire the effort they've put into it.
Alot of hours and stress would have gone into that creation so millions
around the world could enjoy it. At the moment i've kinda stopped D2 for a
break. I'm retiring my USEHCL characters and emptying them out. I have been
offloading stuff on d2jsp so i can always come back to d2 and get back into
it with a bit of help. Anyway, i have always had a theory of criticising
before trying. I done this with WoW so i thought i'd try it and see if it's
true. I bought the 14day trial for $2 and well, in my opinion i'm glad i
bought the 14day trial and not an actual copy. I hope that those whom play
WoW enjoy it but i am going to be one that will not. :) Thanks for your
understanding Mark. :)

WoW pretty much *requires* broadband.  And a fairly new computer.
But, that said, it is indeed quite different from D2.  Some will enjoy it
much more than others, just depends on person.
It is / was _made_ to be a time eater.  There is no - jump on and do a quick
five / ten minute slaughter of a few bosses.  A good boss will take a half
hour just to get to in WoW.  Travel is slower / longer - much larger world,
and there is no tp as such.  Makes for spending the first five to fifteen
minutes of play just getting back from town to the area you are currently
questing / fighting in.  Not everyones cup of tea, but it is very pretty. :)

It is an even bigger shame you are quitting D2. :(
Cousin Tom is F.I.N.A.L.L.Y. in his new house and should be getting back on
some (he has wife and kids, dang RL limits gaming time) soon.  I may even be
playing a few games with him every now and then.

Need some USEast HCL mediocre items? I can't find time to play
either.

Now there is an idea. A few WOW waypoints in strategic areas would be quite
a blessing.

Travel in WOW is amazingly time consuming and it used to be a lot worse.
Flight paths are always being added and sped up.

Just like Blizzard put out patches for D2 to change/add to the
gameplay, so to they've done for WoW.  It's just the nature of WoW
that the changes require a lot bigger patches.  Add in that there's
been a lot more than D2 got, and yeah, it's a while after first
installing that you get done with patching.

What you can do though, is if you have a friend that plays WoW and can
either hook up your computer to theirs via a network, or have some
sort of portable disc that can transport 12GB or so, you can just
directly copy their WoW folder to your computer and you'll be all
patched and ready to start playing.  The Key you get when you purchase
WoW (or a trial version) is only used in creating your account, it's
not connected with the software at all.

So if you ever change your mind in the future and get curious about
WoW again, that's something you could consider.
