The Vista OS apparently has some issues with the game. Does anyone have any
advice about playing the game on a newer puter? TIA.

Scrap Vista and install XP. ;)

I agree. I have a "newer puter", a Core 2 Duo running at 3.3GHz on a
P35/ICH9R chipset, and D2 plays just fine using XP.
I wouldn't install Vista if you gave it to me free and offered me $100 to
install it. (Unless I could dual-boot with XP and never boot into Vista.

Indeed. I won't go with Vista unless id software's next game requires
it. (And even then, only if I have a machine beefy enough to run both
Vista and the game at good speeds.)

I would say the same about XP and Win98SE. :)

I installed D2 on a Vista machine, and except for Vista erroneously
thinking D2 didn't install correctly, it works fine.
What error / problem are you encountering?

I am running D2/LOD on a Vista64 machine with no problems.
You have to download and install the D2/LOD patch manually
the first time to get it to run. Then it works perfectly. I
installed D2/LOD on an attached USB hard drive so it does
not take up space on my main system.
I use Farstone VirtualDrive Pro to run D2/LOD without the
CD.

My HP laptop with a dual core processor, 2GB of RAM and an Nvidia 7160
graphics card runs Diablo II just fine. About the only advice that I
could give is to rip your play disk to an image file and mount it with
a disk utility like Daemon Tools in order to minimize any throughput
problems you may be running into from a buggy driver.

Install as you would any other time. After installation, right click the
icon used to start the game and go toproperties, click the box for run as
xp. save it. when run , do so as administrator and you'll have no problems
at all. I use vista and my D2 runs perfectly fine.
